CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – On Sunday. Porter-Guard boys basketball coach John Pearson will celebrate fathers day with daughter Elise/ This fall, father and daughter will share the same Cyclone varsity sideline.

JP looked on inside the Wendell Center as Elise conducted practice Thursday afternoon. The former Cyclone standout herself, Elise was recently named the new head varsity coach of the girls program.

After graduating from the College of Charleston like her dad, Elise has been helping JP behind the scenes while coaching the jv girls.

She wants to play more fast paced than her dad but will still employ some of the same schemes. John thinks they both have a similar demeaner on the sidelines where everything is under control.

Now there’s a same surname on the Cyclone varsity sideline.

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Texas junior first baseman Katie Stewart has done something no Longhorn has done in 28 years.

College Sports Communicators named her a first-team academic All-American on Tuesday, marking the first time a Texas player has made the top squad since Nikki Cockrell did it in 1998. Junior infielder Viviana Martinez was named to the third team.

Stewart bashed a school record 31 home runs with 79 RBIs to help fuel Texas to a second consecutive national championship, earning Southeastern Conference Player of the Year honors and other first-team All-American distinctions. She carries a 3.54 GPA with a corporate communication major.

Stewart and Cockrell are the only Longhorns to earn the honor multiple times. Cockrell was a third-team pick in 1999, and Stewart was a second-team selection last season. In total, nine Longhorns have made the academic All-America team in its history.

Martinez bounced back in a big way after missing all of the 2025 season with a knee injury. She hit .379 with 67 hits and 47 RBIs while commanding the infield from the shortstop position. She struck out just 11 times and was a first-team All-SEC selection. She’s an applied movement science major with a 3.91 GPA.

Local high school athletes from Erie County were awarded with scholarships through the Erie Metro Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame on Wednesday afternoon (June 17th).

Gannon men’s basketball has promoted assistant coach Mike Chalas to associate head coach, following the Golden Knights’ historic season.

Having joined head coach Easton Bazzoli’s staff in 2024, Chalas has been an integral part of the Gannon run that included the school’s first national title in men’s hoops.
