It isn’t a coincidence that trade discussions surrounding J.J. McCarthy have picked up, and everyone should be taking notice.

The future of the Minnesota Vikings is a very fascinating one to parse out.

New general manager, Nolan Teasley, coming in creates a lot of interesting variables. We know the history he has with the Seattle Seahawks, but there is one key piece on context we need to understand: he wasn’t making the final decisions.

That creates an interesting dynamic moving forward, and that’s going to come into play over the course of the next few months.

Nolan Teasley Facts

  • After playing college football, Teasley worked in the private sector before sending out letters to all 32 teams.
  • Seahawks general manager John Schneider gave him a job as an intern in 2013.
  • Teasley worked exclusively in the pro personnel department until his promotion to assistant general manager in 2023.

Minnesota Vikings being linked to trading J.J. McCarthy is no mistake

Earlier in the week, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero appeared on KFAN’s Power Trip Morning Show and hinted at the idea that the Vikings might trade quarterback J.J. McCarthy.

'If you're gonna trade him, it's gotta be now.'@TheRealForno and @LuftKrigare on why trading J.J. McCarthy now vs. later makes too much sense pic.twitter.com/uEVsmR5Tl6

“I don't know what direction they're going to go as you get closer to the season, but let's say Kyler wins the job, which I would lean toward Kyler is the starting quarterback. Do you have J.J. as the backup? Do you potentially look to trade him while there's still some intrigue within the league? You might be able to get more for him with two years left on his rookie contract than with one year left. Those are all things that I would think you're going to talk through."

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero

The timing of Pelissero’s comments are interesting. They came less than 24 hours after Teasley was officially introduced as the Vikings’ general manager before he had seen both McCarthy and Kyler Murray throw in practice. It does raise an interesting point on an overall level: Teasley isn’t attached to any of these players. I talked about that on The Real Forno Show this past Thursday.

“He [Nolan Teasley] has no attachment to any of these players. So to me, all bets are off, anything’s on the board. I highly doubt Justin Jefferson would be moved. I would be floored [in fact], but there is still no attachment to him. There’s no attachment to anybody. It’s a non-zero proposition that anybody could be moved at any time for any reason, because there is no, I drafted this guy, I want to see it through. McCarthy isn’t that. You just don’t know what Teasley is going to want to do or how he feels about any of these guys, and I think the tonal shift from Tom Pelissero is definitely something to keep an eye on.”

Tyler Forness on The Real Forno Show

It’s really interesting to see the tonal shift, and it raises fascinating questions. Will Teasley end up making serious moves with the roster over the next few months? Could he swing a blockbuster trade with McCarthy or someone else on the roster? It’s certainly a lot easier to make a trade when you don’t have any emotional investment in the roster. Without that element, you can see a clearer picture of what needs to happen.

That could be why the Vikings end up trading McCarthy or anyone else, and it could happen at any time.

Latest controversy with Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy says everything and nothing at the same time

Anything that happens with Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J. McCarthy is going to draw attention, whether fair or not.

The Minnesota Vikings quarterback competition, or lack thereof, is going to be the biggest talking point of the offseason. Because of that, everything that both Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy do will be heavily scrutinized.

That happened after practice on Thursday when the media was there to watch for the second time during OTAs. One aspect in heavy focus is going to be the discipline of McCarthy. His consistency has been questioned within the building, something The Athletic’s Alec Lewis highlighted in his latest piece.

O'Connell hasn't said this publicly, nor has any other Vikings staffer, but the lack of consistency from McCarthy in this vein contributed to the team signing Murray. McCarthy's day-to-day disparity first became apparent following his torn meniscus in the fall and winter of 2024. It forced many inside the TCO Performance Center to push for the team to sign Aaron Rodgers.

Minnesota Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy Facts

  • After trading fourth and fifth-round picks to move up one spot, the Minnesota Vikings selected McCarthy at 10th overall.
  • Despite having a dynamite performance in his preseason debut, McCarthy tore his meniscus and missed the entire 2024 season.
  • In his first start, McCarthy had three very poor quarters before a dynamite fourth quarter earned him NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors.
  • McCarthy missed seven games due to three separate injuries, bringing his total games (regular season and playoffs) missed to 25.

J.J. McCarthy leaving practice quickly causes a stir

When practice ended, McCarthy made a relatively quick exit, something that Lewis noted in the same piece.

O'Connell's perch provides him with the details behind these snaps - behind everything. He knows the degree of difficulty of throws in his scheme, and he knows whether or not it matters that McCarthy stretches away from the other three quarterbacks before practices like Thursday's, or that he jogged off the field Thursday before the other three, who stayed behind together.

The Athletic’s Alec Lewis

Normally, something like that wouldn’t be a very big deal. In a competition, even the smallest of details can end up being meaningful. That paragraph was all over social media with many criticizing McCarthy for leaving practice the way he did. We did get some additional context from Lewis about why he was so quick to get off the field.

Does sound like J.J. McCarthy had golf plans this weekend with a bunch of teammates and practice went long, hence the quick exit post practice. Context critical, always. https://t.co/twm4CSVIWE

There are multiple ways to look at this. You can take the angle that McCarthy leaving practice early is a bad look no matter what. If your biggest competition is sticking around after practice, maybe you should be doing the same.

On the other hand, he was apparently rushing to make a get together with teammates. That certainly flies in the face of the idea that he would be a bad teammate or isn’t taking this seriously. Sure, golfing won’t help him win football games, but he’s building camaraderie with his teammates, which is an important element of a successful franchise.

Overall, this really tells us everything and nothing at all about McCarthy. Whatever your position on him will likely determine what you think about this.

Essentially, it doesn’t mean anything.
