Ex-Samsung chip executive says RAM prices won’t stay high for long

19 May 2026 at 16:30

Right now, RAM is expensive, and the main reason is artificial intelligence. Now, aΒ former Samsung chip boss, Kye-hyun Kyung, says RAM prices may become much cheaper in the next couple of years. He said this at a meeting held by the National Academy of Engineering of Korea in Seoul.

Big tech companies are building AI systems, and these systems need a lot of fast memory chips. Due to this, chip factories started making more AI memory instead of normal PC memory, like DDR5. So, normal memory became harder to find, and prices went up.

Kyung says this will change soon. He believes many new factories are being built, mainly in China, by companies like ChangXin Memory Technologies and Jiahe Jinwei. These factories will make a lot more memory chips in the future. When there are more chips available, prices usually go down.

He thinks RAM prices may drop a lot by the second half of 2027. If there is too much supply, memory will become cheap again for everyone.

But he also gave a warning. AI companies spend a lot of money on chips. If they feel AI is not making enough profit, they may spend less. If that happens, demand for chips will go down. Then there will be too many chips in the market. This can also make prices fall, but it can be bad for chip makers.

RAM is expensive now because demand is high and supply is low. But in the future, more production and lower demand could make RAM much cheaper.
