Samsung develops new GAIA AI PC chip to take on Nvidia and Qualcomm

9 July 2026 at 17:25

Samsung is developing GAIA, a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU)-based AI accelerator for PCs. Built on a 4nm process with a memory-centric architecture, the chip is reportedly being tested by PC makers including Lenovo and HP.

The project marks Samsung’s return to the PC processor segment while positioning the company to capitalize on the rapidly expanding AI PC market.

Samsung’s System LSI Business is developing the chip as a dedicated generative AI accelerator tailored for AI-powered PCs, signaling a fresh attempt to establish itself in a market it stepped away from years ago.

GAIA PC chip is said to use an architecture optimized around an NPU, making it better suited for on-device AI tasks such as real-time language processing, image generation, productivity features, and other experiences.

The chip is reportedly being manufactured on Samsung’s 4nm process. Samsung is also believed to be preparing future integration with its Processing-in-Memory (PIM) technology, an advanced DRAM architecture.

The report suggests that Samsung has already begun supplying GAIA samples to major PC manufacturers, including Lenovo and HP, which suggests development has moved beyond the conceptual stage.

The South Korean tech giant has spent years designing Exynos application processors and dedicated NPUs for smartphones, and this project appears to adapt that mobile AI experience for larger computing platforms.
