Samsung Now Bar to support more third-party apps in One UI 9

21 May 2026 at 19:29

Samsung is planning to make the Now Bar more useful in One UI 9.0 by adding support for more third-party apps. This change will happen because Google is improving Android’s Live Updates feature in Android 17.

At the Google I/O 2026 event, Google announced a new feature, Metric Style for Live Updates in Android 17. This new style can show three pieces of information at the same time. It is mainly designed for apps that constantly update live data.

The Now Bar first appeared on Samsung Galaxy phones with One UI 7.0. It shows live activities like music playback, timers, navigation, and other ongoing tasks directly on the lock screen and other parts of the phone.

In One UI 8.0, Samsung connected the Now Bar with Android’s Live Updates system, allowing apps like Uber to show live information in real time. Now, Samsung is planning to add more apps support with One UI 9.

Google New Live Updates

Google said this feature will work especially well for three kinds of apps: health and fitness apps, timer apps, and travel apps. Like, a fitness app could show calories burned, heart rate, and running speed together. A flight tracking app could show departure time, current flight location, and arrival time all in one place.

The new Live Updates style will appear in several places on Android phones, including the notification panel, lock screen, status bar, and always-on display.

Since Samsung’s Now Bar already works with Android’s Live Updates system, these new app types will also appear in the Now Bar automatically when One UI 9.0 arrives. This means Galaxy users will be able to see more useful live information without opening apps.
