Apple eyes LG HMO display as Samsung pushes OLED tech

1 June 2026 at 19:25

LG Display is reportedly working on a new display technology, High Mobility Oxide (HMO). And Apple is thinking about using this new technology. This technology is still being developed and tested, but it may be used in future Apple devices if it works well.

HMO is used in an important part of a screen, the TFT backplane. This part controls each pixel of the display to help the screen show images properly. If this part works better, the whole screen becomes clearer, smoother, and uses less battery.

Right now, many OLED screens use a technology, LTPO, which already helps save power and improve performance. HMO is being developed as an improvement over this to make oxide-based TFTs work much faster and better.

Apple Watch 11 series

LG Display is testing this new technology in its 6th-generation production line. The company is using a method, sputtering, which is already used in many factories. This makes it easier to produce the technology on a large scale in the future if it works well.

Reports say Apple may first use this technology in the Apple Watch and also use it in iPhones and other devices. At the same time, Samsung Display is also improving its own OLED screen technology. So there is strong competition between LG Display and Samsung in making better screens for future devices.

However, HMO is still not ready for real products. It is still being tested, and companies need to make sure it is stable, reliable, and good enough for mass production.

Samsung unveils ultra-slim OLED screen, 4K 360Hz Penta Tandem and 14 more displays

1 June 2026 at 06:23

On June 1, 2026, Samsung Display officially unveiled 16 new gaming OLED products at Computex 2026, including an ultra-slim laptop OLED and a 360Hz monitor with QD-OLED and Penta Tandem.

Samsung Display’s gaming OLED product lineup ranges from 8.8-inch to 49-inch screens. The 2026 range unveiling at Computex spans handheld gaming PCs to large monitors to secure leadership in the segment.

Ultra-slim laptop OLED

Samsung is showcasing an ultra-slim laptop OLED at Computex 2026. This new product comes with a thickness reduction of over 20 percent compared to existing mass-produced products.

The company says it managed to reduce the thickness through a proprietary process that etches the TFT glass substrate and encapsulation glass more than 30 percent thinner.

What’s more, the screen doesn’t lag behind mature products. Despite reduced thickness, the screen maintains a VESA True Black 1000 rating, a maximum refresh rate of up to 240Hz, and a ClearMR 11000 certification.

360Hz QD-OLED with Penta Tandem

Samsung Display is also showcasing its 360Hz gaming monitor, equipped with QD-OLED technology and Penta Tandem. The product entered mass production in March 2026 and had an official reveal last week.

This is the world’s first QD-OLED product, which simultaneously achieves 4K resolution and a high refresh rate of 360Hz. Samsung Display will also be showcasing its Penta Tandem OLED at a dedicated space.

Samsung Gaming OLED Computex 2026

Samsung’s Penta Tandem tech improves the efficiency, lifespan, and brightness of QD-OLED by increasing the stacking structure of blue OLEDs from four to five layers and applying the latest organic materials.

Here are all the distinct display names and specific configurations explicitly named in the announcement:

Portable PC Category (1 Display)

  1. 8.8-inch Portable Gaming PC OLED

Laptop OLED Category (5 Displays)

  1. 16-inch 2.5K Laptop OLED
  2. 16-inch UHD Laptop OLED
  3. Ultra-Slim Laptop OLED (165Hz Variant)
  4. Ultra-Slim Laptop OLED (240Hz Variant)
  5. Ultra-Slim Laptop OLED (True Black 1000 Baseline Panel)

Monitor QD-OLED Category (10 Displays)

  1. 27-inch 500Hz QD-OLED
  2. 27-inch Standard QD-OLED (PUBG Demo Panel)
  3. 31.5-inch 4K 360Hz QD-OLED (World’s First)
  4. 31.5-inch 4K 360Hz QD-OLED (Dual-Mode FHD 680Hz Variant)
  5. 31.5-inch UHD QD-OLED (AI Mini-Game Panel)
  6. 31.5-inch Standard QD-OLED (DJMAX Demo Panel)
  7. 34-inch QHD+ QD-OLED (True Black 500 / V-Stripe Panel)
  8. 49-inch Dual QHD QD-OLED (F1 25 Demo Panel)
  9. QD-OLED Penta Tandem (5-Layer Blue Stacking Baseline Panel)
  10. QD-OLED Penta Tandem (High-Luminance HDR Variant)

“The technological paradigm of the high-end gaming display market has already shifted completely from LCD to self-emissive displays.”

Samsung develops 4K QD-OLED display with 360Hz refresh rate

28 May 2026 at 08:12

On May 28, Samsung made a massive announcement: the company’s Display subsidiary has successfully developed the first QD-OLED monitors to combine 4K resolution with a 360Hz refresh rate.

Samsung Display is set to unveil its 4K QD-OLED panel with a 360Hz refresh rate at COMPUTEX 2026, taking place in Taipei next month.

What makes the display actually impressive is the simultaneous support for 4K resolution and refresh rates of 360Hz.

The press release states that Samsung Display has focused on developing a top-tier QD-OLED for monitors that combines 4K resolution with a 360Hz refresh rate.

Through optimization of the panel circuitry and driving system, the company overcame these technical barriers and successfully developed one of the highest-spec QD-OLED for monitors to date.

Samsung’s new QD-OLED display isn’t just limited to 4K resolution and 360Hz refresh rate. It comes with industry-leading specs across other key features, including Dual Mode, high brightness, and text readability.

“With Dual Mode, the panel can operate up to 680Hz, allowing users to enjoy smooth, sharp visuals even in FPS (First-Person Shooter) gaming environments where split-second response time is critical,” said Samsung Display.

The new monitor panel is certified with VESA’s DisplayHDR True Black 600. The V-stripe pixel structure, a new technology introduced this year, is also incorporated into this new product.

The South Korean display giant also revealed that it is in talks with over 10 global companies for the supply of its new 31.5-inch 4K 360Hz product. The company plans to begin full-scale mass production in the second half of this year.
