WhatsApp is making Meta AI more useful with a new feature called Side Chat, giving users a private way to get AI assistance without leaving their conversations.

WABetaInfo reports that WhatsApp Side Chat feature is currently rolling out to a limited number of Android and iOS users, and it focuses on one key idea: letting Meta AI understand a conversation’s context while keeping the interaction protected.

Side Chat arrives as an extension of WhatsApp’s growing AI push. Earlier, Meta introduced Incognito Chat with Meta AI, which allowed users to have private AI conversations where messages disappear after closing the session.

Meanwhile, the Side Chat takes a different approach. Instead of starting a separate AI conversation, it lets users ask Meta AI for help based on an existing chat.

Here are the seven features WhatsApp users can expect:

1. Private AI help inside your chats
2. A separate panel for private questions
3. Context-aware replies without copy and paste
4. Web Search support for better answers
5. Private Processing keeps the feature secure
6. Different from @Meta AI in regular chats
7. Inaccessible when Disappearing messages and Advanced Chat Privacy enabled

The rollout is still limited, and WhatsApp has not publicly shared a timeline for wider availability. If the feature reaches more users, it could become one of the more practical ways Meta AI appears inside WhatsApp.

WhatsApp is expanding its Mentions feature to text-based Status updates. The new feature is being tested in the Beta Program, and an official release could happen later.

You will soon be able to utilize the Mentions feature while sharing text as WhatsApp Status updates. It’s already available to users, but it supports photos and videos. The next expansion will cover the text-based Status updates.

WABetaInfo reports that WhatsApp is testing an extended version of Mentions in the Beta 2.26.25.2 version. Users mentioned in the Status updates will receive a private notification and be able to re-share as their Status.

WhatsApp is gradually adopting features from Instagram. The Stories section has had the Mentions function for years. WhatsApp has borrowed that too and is now gearing up for expansion to the last remaining form of Status updates.

Additionally, WhatsApp is also working to bring a Green dot to the Contact badge. Similar to Instagram Directs, WhatsApp chats will display a Green dot to make users aware of the Online status of the contact.

WhatsApp recently started rolling out a smart alert system. Whenever the system detects sign of a potential scam from an unknown number in chat, it pauses you with a trust window when you open the chat from the list.

Additionally, WhatsApp has rolled out animations for chat bubbles. The visual upgrade makes your chatting experience more lively. Chat bubbles don’t just appear on the screen, but feature a stable animation to appear.
