Maple Leafs expected to go ‘all-in’ for D-man Zach Werenski

The Toronto Maple Leafs appear ready to make their biggest move of the offseason as their pursuit of Zach Werenski continues to gain momentum. Multiple NHL insiders reported that Toronto is pushing hard for the reigning Norris Trophy winner (given to the top NHL defenseman for his all-around impact), who has reportedly not committed to the Columbus Blue Jackets beyond his current contract.

TSN’s Darren Dreger posted on X, “An intriguing day ahead. The D market is wild. Toronto is ‘all-in’ on Werenski.”

He later added, “It’s been assumed Knies will be part of a package if Toronto lands Zach Werenski. See how things develop, but there’s a chance the Leafs won’t have to give up the power forward if this trade comes together.”

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman also expects Toronto to make a serious offer. He said, “I don’t think Toronto will fool around. The Maple Leafs will step up and take their swing; I’d be very curious to see what Tampa offers. If Florida wants to trade a legitimate player… the Panthers could be a player, too.”

Werenski’s market remains active despite reports that he rejected a trade to Dallas. NHL insider David Pagnotta posted on X, “Following up on @reporterchris & @DarrenDreger… scuttlebutt tonight is Werenski rejected a trade to Dallas… Tampa Bay remains engaged in talks here. Philly was in mix too, but seems like TB is Werenski’s top choice right now.”

Werenski has earned elite status after producing 81 points in 75 games last season while averaging 26:37 per night. The 2026 Olympic gold medalist also owns 465 career points and remains under contract for two more seasons with a $9.58 million cap hit.

From Toronto’s perspective, the fit is obvious. The Leafs have searched for a true No. 1 defenseman capable of driving play in every situation. Werenski fills that role immediately while complementing Auston Matthews (his Olympics teammate) and the team’s championship ambitions.

The biggest question remains the trade package. Columbus still wants NHL-ready talent, but Toronto appears determined to protect Matthew Knies if possible. If the Maple Leafs can land Werenski without moving their young power forward, it would reshape both their blue line and their Stanley Cup outlook for years.
