DHARAMSHALA : Jasprit Bumrah’s first outing as Mumbai Indians captain felt less like a temporary fix and more like a glimpse of a possible future.
MI won, Bumrah sounded astute and unruffled, and the franchise may have found its steadiest leadership option for next season if the “uncertainty” surrounding Hardik Pandya remains and Suryakumar Yadav’s batting continues to be iffy.
One game is too small a sample to draw sweeping conclusions as far as Bumrah’s captaincy for MI is concerned. But as subplots go, this one has a compelling beginning.
Bumrah had waited a long time for this leadership opportunity. He became MI captain only in his 157th IPL appearance, an almost absurdly late handover for a cricketer who joined the franchise in 2013 and has since become one of its defining figures. At the toss, Bumrah joked: “I didn’t expect to be a Test captain before I became the captain of Mumbai Indians,” a line that carried both humour and a touch of disbelief.
That remark also captured the central oddity of Bumrah’s leadership arc. India trusted him before Mumbai did. He has already captained India in Tests and T20Is, winning one Test, losing two, winning two T20Is and seeing one wash out. He first led India in the rescheduled Edgbaston Test in 2022 when Rohit Sharma was ruled out with Covid, then guided the T20I side to a 2-0 series win in Ireland in 2023 and later stood in during the Perth Test in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where India won.
What stood out in Dharamsala was not just the result but the manner. Bumrah came across as composed, concise and in control, the kind of captain who does not try to dominate a room so much as steady it. He said he welcomed responsibility, called it a new challenge and spoke of enjoying the final stretch of the season rather than merely surviving it.
That tone matters for a team that has spent the season searching for balance. With Hardik unavailable and Surya not always able to offer continuity with the bat, Bumrah offered MI a simpler centre of gravity. He does not need to prove his value for the franchise; every spell already does that. His captaincy has the feel of a problem-solver, not that of a showman.
Shardul Thakur, who returned with figures of 4/39 against Punjab Kings on Thursday, framed the larger picture neatly. “I have my comfort level with him (Bumrah). We had lots of discussions rather, and I don’t know much about the other bowlers, but of course he’s never shy of sharing his ideas,” Thakur said after the match. “He is definitely a bowler’s captain.”
Thakur added that each of MI’s three captains this season — Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav and Bumrah — brought “different set of ideas,” and insisted there is no fixed formula for success. He also argued that players make captains look good, praising the experience and match-winning ability of all three.
“As a captain, you need to read game situations better than others, put in your best effort and need to keep the team always above you,” Thakur said.
Former India coach Ravi Shastri noted on broadcast that Bumrah “doesn’t clutter the game, he reads it early and stays a step ahead,” while Sunil Gavaskar pointed out that his calmness “filters into the bowling unit, especially in tight overs.”
NEW DELHI: Star pacer Jasprit Bumrah was handed the Mumbai Indians captaincy in the absence of both regular skipper Hardik Pandya and stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav during their IPL 2026 clash against Punjab Kings. It was the first time Bumrah led the Mumbai Indians side, a franchise he has represented for more than a decade.
Bumrah’s maiden outing as Mumbai Indians skipper turned out to be a memorable one as he guided the side to a six-wicket victory over Punjab Kings.
In a video posted by Mumbai Indians on social media, Bumrah was heard saying, "Nayak Dekha Hai? Ek Din ka Mukhya Mantri [Have you watched Nayak? CM For A Day]"
Bumrah, who captained Mumbai Indians in the absence of both Pandya and vice-captain Suryakumar, was drawing a parallel with the Bollywood film Nayak: The Real Hero, in which star actor Anil Kapoor becomes Chief Minister for a day.
The reference comes from the 2001 film, which follows Shivaji Rao, a television cameraman who unexpectedly becomes the Chief Minister of a state for one day after challenging a corrupt politician during an interview.
— mipaltan (@mipaltan)
During his brief stint in power, he takes bold decisions against corruption and wins public support.
Since making his debut for Mumbai Indians in 2013, Bumrah has been an integral part of the franchise. Over the years, he has played 157 matches for MI and picked up 186 wickets.
Was Bumrah leading a side for the first time?
This was not the first time Bumrah had captained a team. He has previously led India in both Tests and T20Is. His leadership experience includes captaining India in two Tests during the 2024/25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia and the rescheduled Birmingham Test against England in 2022.
Bumrah has also captained India in two T20Is, with the team winning both matches under his leadership.
After Mumbai Indians - already out of the IPL 2026 playoff race - secured the win, Bumrah was asked about his experience of leading the side during the post-match presentation.
"Yeah, first game, like I said, I've captained a Test match. I've captained T20Is. Now the only game that is left is ODI cricket. But I don't see that happening (laughs), but jokes apart. Really happy. I had good fun, good weather, great ground. So enjoyed my time," Bumrah said.

Delhi Police uncover alleged pass scam involving a DDCA official
According to a report from the Indian Express, a top Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) official is allegedly the mastermind of a massive IPL 2026 ticket scam.
The report claims that Delhi Police investigators have found out that around 1000 to 1200 complimentary tickets were illegally sold at a very high rate to desperate fans looking for match tickets.
The unholy nexus came into light after three men, Mukeem, Gufran and Md. Faisal were arrested outside the Arun Jaitley Stadium last Friday, May 8, during an IPL 2026 fixture between the home team Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders.
Following interrogation, Delhi Police unearthed the name of a person called Pankaj Yadav, who was also arrested and later four DDCA officials were urged to join the probe.
According to BCCI rules, the host state association of an IPL match receives 10 to 15 per cent complimentary tickets of the total stadium capacity and around 4000 tickets are given to the members of the association.
What did Delhi Police say about the IPL pass scam?
Amid the IPL pass scam investigation, a Delhi Police source told the IE, "This was a very systematic racket with this DDCA official at the top. Depending on the star value of the game and players, the rates of the ticket would be decided. Closer to the start of the game, they would charge more.
"Before the Royal Challengers Bengaluru game with Virat Kohli the major attraction, they charged at least Rs 80,000 for one ticket. We also learnt that the price ranged from Rs 8,000 to Rs 80,000, depending on the match and the demand."
The source added: "This one DDCA official, a suspect in the case, handed over the leftover passes to Yadav."
During the interrogation, Yadav reportedly told the Delhi Police, "They allegedly procured tickets and complimentary passes through various persons. The role of others associated with this syndicate is also under investigation. They also supplied premium tickets at exorbitant prices to people involved in online live betting/satta operations inside stadiums, as well as to pickpockets and other criminal elements."

Pakistan’s crushing defeat to Bangladesh in the opening Test has reportedly sparked serious dressing-room tension, with captain Shan Masood and pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi involved in a heated exchange after the loss.
Pakistan were bowled out for just 163 while chasing 268 in Dhaka, slipping to a 104-run defeat — their third consecutive Test loss to Bangladesh after the 2024 home series setbacks. The defeat was compounded by an ICC sanction, with Pakistan fined 40 per cent of their match fee and docked eight points in the ICC World Test Championship 2025–27 for slow over-rate.
Dressing-room blame game after collapse
According to Telecom Asia Sport, tensions flared in the dressing room when Shan questioned the pace attack’s inability to create pressure, particularly targeting Shaheen’s drop in speed.
“A disgruntled Shan blamed lack of speed from the pace attack, pointing a finger at Shaheen whose average speed was 132 kph, much below Bangladesh’s Nahid Rana,” the report quoted sources as saying.
Shan reportedly told the bowlers: “We failed to create pressure because of lack of speed and that is alarming.”
The comments did not go down well with Shaheen, who reportedly fired back by pointing to Pakistan’s batting collapse.
“To this Shaheen hit back by blaming the poor batting that failed to get a first innings lead and told the skipper to mind his own performance with the bat,” sources told Telecom Asia Sport.
Pakistan’s troubles deepened when the ICC confirmed the team had been ruled eight overs short. The penalty left them on just four points, dropping them to eighth in the WTC table.
The same report claimed analysts had repeatedly warned Shan about the over-rate during the Test.
Changes likely for second Test
The loss has reportedly forced changes ahead of the second Test in Sylhet. Shaheen and opener Imam-ul-Haq are expected to be dropped, while Babar Azam is set to return after recovering from injury.
Senior batter Mohammad Rizwan also reportedly came under criticism after falling for 59 when Pakistan were in a strong first-innings position.
Shreyas Iyer was penalised twelve lakh rupees following a slow over-rate during the victory against Gujarat Titans.
This penalty marks Iyer's first breach this season after repeated violations last year.
Rishabh Pant fined INR 12 lakh against CSK.
What is the over-rate rule in IPL?
The BCCI enforces stringent regulations to ensure matches conclude within the allotted broadcast window. Under Article 2.22 of the Code of Conduct, teams must bowl their full quota of overs within 90 minutes.
Each team must bowl at least 14.1 overs in an hour, including time-outs that last 150 seconds.
For a primary violation, the captain bears the brunt with a standard monetary fine. Subsequent failures to keep pace result in escalating penalties for the leader and potentially the entire playing eleven, aiming to curb the trend of matches stretching late into the night.
A 25% fine will attract one demerit point. For further offences, the points will keep piling on until the slate is cleared after 36 months.
All players can appeal their individual cases to the BCCI ombudsman if the offence is categorised under Level 2 or 3. However, they must pay an INR 90 lakh (approx. USD 104,000) appeal fee.
All matches captains faced slow over rate fine
1. Shreyas Iyer (Punjab Kings): Match 4 vs Gujarat Titans
Despite a gritty victory on the field against the Gujarat Titans, Shreyas Iyer has found himself in the crosshairs of the IPL governing body.
While they successfully managed a middle-order recovery to secure points, the administrative fallout was immediate as he failed to complete the 20 overs within 90 minutes.
This isn't uncharted territory for Iyer, who developed a reputation for time management issues during the 2025 campaign, eventually racking up 36 lakh in total fines last year.
“Punjab Kings (PBKS) Captain Shreyas Iyer has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match No. 4 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against Gujarat Titans (GT) at the New International Cricket Stadium, New Chandigarh,” a statement released by the IPL read.
"As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Iyer was fined INR 12 lakhs."
2. Shreyas Iyer (Punjab Kings): Match 7 vs Chennai Super Kings
PBKS masterfully chased down a daunting 210-run target, but the captain’s failure to maintain the match tempo triggered a stinging financial penalty.
The BCCI showed no mercy toward the Punjab leader, doubling his previous fine to a substantial INR 24 lakh for a repeat over-rate violation. Under Article 2.22, the repercussions rippled through the entire locker room, with every member of the starting eleven and the Impact Player docked up to INR 6 lakh.
"Punjab Kings Captain Shreyas Iyer has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match No.7 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.
"As this was his team’s second offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Iyer was fined INR 24 lakhs. The rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, will be fined either INR six lakhs or 25 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser," the IPL statement read.
3. Shubman Gill (Gujarat Titans): vs Delhi Capitals
During a tense Wednesday night clash at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, the Gujarat Titans were found to be lagging significantly behind their required bowling schedule against the Delhi Capitals. Although they managed to squeeze out the two points, Shubman Gill must pay a fine of INR 12 lakh.
"Gujarat Titans (GT) Captain Shubman Gill has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match No. 14 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against Delhi Capitals (DC) at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi," said an IPL media advisory.
"As this was his team's first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL's Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Gill was fined INR 12 lakh," it added.
4. Ajinkya Rahane (Kolkata Knight Riders): vs Chennai Super Kings
Kolkata’s dismal start to the 2026 campaign has gone from bad to worse as skipper Ajinkya Rahane was slapped with a financial penalty following their latest setback at Chepauk. According to an official statement from the league authorities, the penalty was triggered by a sluggish over-rate.
In a release, the IPL said: "Kolkata Knight Riders Captain Ajinkya Rahanehas been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match No. 22 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against Chennai Super Kings at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.
"As this was his team's first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL's Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Rahane was fined INR 12 lakhs."
5. Rishabh Pant (Lucknow Super Giants): vs Chennai Super Kings
Rishabh Pant-led LSG got back to winning ways, albeit late in the ongoing IPL 2026 on Friday, as they beat CSK by 7 wickets courtesy of a quality knock by Mitchell Marsh.
However, despite the much-needed win, there was bad news for captain Pant after the match after he was fined INR 12 lakh by the BCCI for slow over rate.
The official statement from IPL read, "Rishabh Pant, Captain, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match No. 59 of TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow on Friday.
"As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Rishabh Pant was fined INR 12 lakhs."

Anshul Kamboj conceded 63 runs in 16 balls during CSK vs LSG clash.
Kamboj recorded the worst economy rate in IPL history.
LSG got back to winning ways against CSK on Friday.
Anshul Kamboj makes unwanted IPL history
India international fast bowler Anshul Kamboj recorded an unwanted history in the Indian Premier League on Friday as he conceded 63 runs after bowling just 16 deliveries during Chennai Super Kings vs Lucknow Super Giants clash at Ekana Stadium.
Kamboj recorded an economy rate of 23.63, the worst recorded by any bowler in the history of the competition, who has bowled at least 2 overs in an innings.
He broke the record previously held by Washington Sundar, who conceded 46 runs in 2 overs during an IPL 2024 clash between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals.
Virat Kohli has said he does not want things to be "complicated" around his place in the Indian team and made it clear that if he is constantly made to prove his value, then that environment is "not meant" for him.
Speaking on Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s podcast, Kohli said he still enjoys playing cricket and remains interested in playing the 2027 ODI World Cup, but only if there is clarity from both sides.
"I am always ready because that's my daily life. You know, I work out, we eat well at home. It is because I like living that way. It is not only to play cricket. So that is where I am. I mean, this 27 (2027 World Cup) chat and all that...I've been asked so many times, 'do you want to play 27?'," he said.
"I know the answer. Like, why would I leave my home, you know, get my stuff over and be like, I don't know what I want. Of course, if I'm playing, I want to play cricket. I want to carry on. Playing a World Cup for India is amazing. But as I said, the value has to be two sides," he added.
Kohli said his approach towards the game remains simple and honest.
"My perspective is very clear. If I can add value to the environment that I am part of, and the environment feels that I can add value, I will be seen. If I am made to feel like I need to prove my worth and my value, I am not in that space," said Kohli.
The 37-year-old now only plays ODI cricket for India after retiring from T20 Internationals in 2024 and Test cricket in 2025. With fewer ODI matches being played, his appearances for India have become limited.
Kohli is expected to next play in India’s ODI series against England from July 14 to July 19. India head coach Gautam Gambhir has so far not given a clear answer on the future of Kohli and Rohit Sharma in ODI cricket.
Kohli said he continues to prepare fully for the game.
"I am being honest to my preparations, I am being honest to how I approach the game. I put my head down, I work hard. When I arrive to play, I work as hard if not harder than anyone else and I play the game in the right way," he said.
He also spoke about his commitment on the field.
"I will do that because I prepare accordingly. I am prepared that I will field 50 overs. After operating in this way, if I have to prove my worth and value, that place is not meant to be for me," he said.
Kohli also recalled his return to the Vijay Hazare Trophy after nearly two decades during the 2025-26 season. He played two matches for Delhi, scored a century in one of them and became the fastest batter to complete 16,000 List A runs.
"I was very clear in my head that I am not going out there to prove anything to anyone. I am going there to play because I love playing the game. That's how I played Vijay Hazare as well. It was amazing.
"I thought I have played for so long, do I have the motivation? But the moment my intention switched to 'I want to play because I love the game', I just loved batting. I felt like a child again. I was like this is not about anyone, this is about me and the game," he said.
Kohli also said he does not like uncertainty around selection and role clarity.
"The moment I feel like people are trying to complicate it for me and be like 'oh this and that'. Either be clear and honest and upfront or be quiet and let me play. If you go to a workplace and people say we believe in your abilities and a week later they start questioning the way you operate, it's like why?" he said.
"Either tell me on day one that I am not good enough or I am not needed but if you have said that I am good enough and that we are not thinking otherwise, then be quiet. If you start operating up and down because of results, you can never have a consistent stance," he added.
Kolkata Knight Riders will host Gujarat Titans at their home, Eden Gardens, in Kolkata on Saturday, May 16.
KKR’s season has been far from ideal, suffering six defeats out of the 11 matches they have played, while one game against PBKS was washed out.
Shambolic starts have left the three-time champions struggling on the points table and one more loss is likely to end their hopes of qualifying for the playoffs.
Why are there no double-headers on Saturday, May 16, in IPL 2026?
If you were hoping to catch two IPL matches this Saturday, May 16, you are out of luck. The Board of Control for Cricket in India had built 12 double-headers into the IPL 2026 calendar, but that chapter is now firmly closed for Saturdays.
All eight of those twin-fixture days were wrapped up through the month of April, spread across both weekend days. Going forward into May, the double-header treatment belongs exclusively to Sundays, while Saturdays go back to hosting just one game.
The shift became visible immediately in the first week of May. Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians played out a standalone Saturday fixture at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
The following Saturday brought another standout contest, with Rajasthan Royals taking on Gujarat Titans at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium in Jaipur.
Now the spotlight turns to Kolkata, where the Knight Riders will welcome Gujarat Titans to the historic Eden Gardens. Few venues in world cricket carry the same electric atmosphere, and this match promises to deliver the kind of tension that needs no warm-up act.
This is a crucial match as both teams are desperate for two points to keep pushing for a playoff berth.
IPL 2026 double-header format explained
The double-header games are usually scheduled on weekends, and mostly on Sundays.
These matches give a boost to the tournament, and the table often changes rapidly as the games take place one after the other.
On the double-header days, the timings are as follows:
Middle East & North Africa: Cricbuzz, Elife, Switch TV, StarzPlay
Pakistan: Tapmad TV
USA & Canada: Willow TV

LSG beat CSK, cutting their playoff qualification chances to just around 25%.
Mumbai Indians defeated PBKS, extending Punjab's losing run to five games.
Eliminated sides LSG and MI are now shaping the top-four race significantly.
IPL 2026: How eliminated teams are deciding who reaches the playoffs
In IPL 2026, the eliminated teams are proving to be the most dangerous ones on the park. Lucknow Super Giants and Mumbai Indians have both been knocked out of playoff contention, but they are making life extremely difficult for the sides still fighting for a top-four finish.
Two results in quick succession, Mumbai beating Punjab Kings on Thursday and Lucknow defeating Chennai Super Kings on Friday, have thrown the playoff race wide open and left several teams staring nervously at the points table.
Chennai came into their clash against Lucknow riding a three-match winning streak and genuinely believing a fourth consecutive victory was within reach. Shivam Dube's late cameo had taken them to 187, which appeared competitive enough for Ruturaj Gaikwad's side to defend.
But Mitchell Marsh had an entirely different script in mind. The Australian opener went after Anshul Kamboj and Spencer Johnson from the very first over.
Lucknow sat at 86 for 0 after six overs, and from that point, the game effectively had one possible outcome. Marsh's dismissal, an unfortunate run-out at the non-striker's end, briefly gave CSK something to work with.
But the asking rate had already fallen too low, and Lucknow calmly saw out the remaining overs to claim a comfortable victory by seven wickets.
A win on Friday would have given their playoff qualification a massive boost and potentially lifted them into the top four for the first time this season.
At the very least, they would have moved above Punjab Kings into fourth. None of that happened.
Instead, CSK have slipped to sixth on the points table and now carry only a roughly 25 per cent chance of making the final four. Their path forward is narrow but still open, as they must win both remaining matches and rely on results elsewhere going their way.
Jatin Sapru put it best when he wrote that Mumbai, the previous night and Lucknow, the following evening, had turned knocked-out teams into toll collectors on the highway to the playoffs.
He wrote: "Mumbai last night, Lucknow tonight - The knocked out teams suddenly become toll collectors on the highway to playoffs … Now Rajasthan Royals could gain the most from these two results but wait, Delhi may have other plans !! Funnn week coming up …"
The Cricket News Opinion: The real drama lies ahead next week
There is a cruel beauty to what Lucknow and Mumbai have done this week. Both have nothing left to play for in terms of progression, yet they have handed the rest of the field some of the most significant defeats of the season.
No dead rubbers truly exist because pride, franchise reputation and simple competitive instinct keep every team honest till the very last ball.
CSK and Punjab would have preferred an easier pathway. Instead, they got ambushed by teams who had everything to prove and nothing to lose. Now, the real drama lies next week when IPL will be in its final lap before the playoffs.

Anshul Kamboj endured a tough outing against Lucknow Super Giants in Lucknow on Friday, registering one of the costliest spells by a Chennai Super Kings bowler in IPL history.
Kamboj gave away 63 runs in just 2.4 overs during CSK’s seven-wicket defeat. It is now the second-most expensive spell ever by a CSK bowler in the IPL.
Most runs conceded by a CSK bowler in an IPL innings:
0/65 (3) – Khaleel Ahmed vs RCB, Bengaluru, 2025
0/63 (2.4) – Anshul Kamboj vs LSG, Lucknow, 2026
0/62 (4) – Lungi Ngidi vs MI, Delhi, 2021
2/61 (4) – Shardul Thakur vs RCB, Bengaluru, 2024
0/60 (4) – Simarjeet Singh vs GT, Ahmedabad, 2024
Kamboj also became only the second bowler in IPL history to concede more than 60 runs in a match while bowling three or fewer overs. The only other bowler on the list is Khaleel Ahmed, who returned figures of 0/65 against RCB in Bengaluru in 2025.
Kamboj is the first bowler to be hit for four sixes in an over twice in an IPL game.
The CSK pacer was taken apart by LSG batters throughout the chase. Out of the 16 balls he bowled, 11 went for either a four or a six. That means 68.75 per cent of his deliveries ended in boundaries. Kamboj ended up conceding eight sixes in the innings, equalling the IPL record for most sixes conceded by a bowler in a single innings alongside Yash Dayal against KKR in Ahmedabad in 2023.
Among all IPL spells of at least two overs, only Washington Sundar had a worse boundary percentage. Sundar conceded 10 boundaries in 12 balls during his 1/46 spell in two overs against DC in 2024, with 83.33 per cent of his deliveries going for boundaries.
Kamboj’s toughest moment came in the 17th over when Nicholas Pooran smashed four consecutive sixes to finish the chase for LSG.
NEW DELHI: A long chapter in Mumbai Indians history has come to an end, with former India all-rounder Robin Singh officially announcing his departure from the franchise after a 16-year association.
Robin confirmed on Friday that he has parted ways with both Mumbai Indians and their overseas sister franchise MI Emirates, bringing to a close one of the longest support-staff stints in franchise cricket.
“I’d like to share that I have officially parted ways with the Mumbai Indians. Although I have not been part of their IPL staff since 2022, as of this year also with their team in the Emirates league,” Robin wrote in a social media post.
He also thanked the franchise and fans for their support over the years.
“Thank you to the entire MI family and the fans for the support through this remarkable journey of mine since 2010. Wishing the franchise good luck in the years ahead.”
— robinsingh1409 (@robinsingh1409)
Robin joined Mumbai Indians in 2010 and became a key figure behind the scenes during the franchise’s most successful era. He was part of the setup during all five IPL title-winning campaigns and also contributed to the team’s two Champions League Twenty20 triumphs.
Key role beyond IPL
Though his direct role with MI’s IPL unit ended in 2022, Robin remained involved in the wider Mumbai Indians network. He served as general manager of MI Emirates during the inaugural International League T20 season in 2023 and was later elevated as head of the franchise in 2024.
His exit marks the end of a significant coaching era for the franchise, where he worked alongside several title-winning squads.
Before his coaching career, Robin represented India in 136 ODIs, scoring 2,336 runs and taking 69 wickets. He later became one of the most sought-after coaches in T20 leagues around the world.

Players of both Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) observed a minute’s silence and wore black armbands before the start of their IPL 2026 match at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Friday in memory of those who lost their lives in the storms that hit Uttar Pradesh in the last few days.
"In solidarity and remembrance. Today, we stand together in grief and remembrance, honouring the lives lost in the storms in Uttar Pradesh," CSK's official handles posted on X.
Earlier, LSG captain Rishabh Pant won the toss and elected to bowl first against CSK.
A win for CSK would take them into the top four of the points table and improve their chances of qualifying for the playoffs. LSG are already out of the playoffs race and are playing for pride in their remaining matches.
LSG made three changes to their playing XI, bringing in Akash Singh, Abdul Samad and Mukul Choudhary.
After winning the toss, Pant said, “The wicket is looking a little bit tacky, so just did not need to go out there and bat ourselves. As a team, we have a lot to achieve. We are a team, we run on trust, and that is something we are looking forward to. We are trying a few things for the next season for sure. And just looking to give our 200 percent regardless of anything.
“Definitely, there is no running away from the way we have played this season. But at the same time, there are a lot of positives that we can take because we are a little frustrated as a team as we know we have it in the team to do well.
“We can make it happen and sometimes things don't work your way, but at the same time, no complaints from that side. We've got to still play good cricket and look to improve ourselves each and every day..”
CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad said Spencer Johnson would make his debut for the franchise in place of injured Jamie Overton, while Gurjapneet Singh replaced Akeal Hosein during the side’s bowling innings.
“It is a privilege to wear the yellow jersey. It is a venue where you have to bat and bowl well. There is a bit of moisture to start, but if we start well and get to 170-180 then it would be a challenging total."

NEW DELHI: Rachin Ravindra has left Kolkata Knight Riders midway through the IPL 2026 season, with the New Zealand batter returning home to prepare for the national side’s upcoming Test tour of England.
KKR confirmed the development on Friday, stating that Ravindra had departed the squad to begin his red-ball preparations ahead of New Zealand’s three-match Test series against England, scheduled to begin on June 4.
“Rachin Ravindra has returned home to begin his red-ball preparations for New Zealand's upcoming Test tour to England,” the franchise said in an official statement.
The franchise also shared a farewell clip on Instagram showing Ravindra exchanging hugs and handshakes with teammates before his departure.
“Best wishes from the Knights as Rachin heads home to prepare for national duty,” KKR wrote in the caption.
Rachin was bought by KKR for his base price of Rs 2 crore at the IPL 2026 auction after being released by Chennai Super Kings. Despite expectations around the New Zealand all-rounder, he did not play a single game this season.
KKR opted for Cameron Green in the middle order role, leaving Ravindra on the bench throughout the campaign. His exit now comes without him making an appearance in the purple and gold.
KKR’s season has been a turbulent one. The three-time champions endured a miserable start, failing to register a single win in their first six matches. However, they revived their campaign with four straight victories before losing to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in their previous outing.
Led by Ajinkya Rahane, KKR are currently eighth in the points table with nine points from 11 matches and remain on the brink of elimination. They need to win all their remaining matches to stay alive in the playoff race, with net run rate likely to play a decisive role.
NEW DELHI: Ravichandran Ashwin has come out strongly in support of Hardik Pandya, insisting it is unfair to hold the captain solely responsible for Mumbai Indians’ disappointing IPL 2026 campaign.
MI, one of the most successful franchises in IPL history, became only the second side to be knocked out of playoff contention this season after managing just four wins from 12 matches. With Hardik also enduring a lean run with both bat and ball, criticism around his captaincy has intensified.
Ashwin, however, believes the blame has been misplaced.
“I wouldn't review his captaincy this year at all. Honestly, when you have seasons like this, to pin the blame on the captain is quite unfair. Nobody has turned up. The team has failed to turn up,” Ashwin told ESPNcricinfo.
‘You’re asking him to do too much’
The former India spinner pointed to Hardik’s successful leadership stint at Gujarat Titans, where he led the side to a title and a runners-up finish in two seasons, as proof of his captaincy credentials.
“He was there at Gujarat Titans. Had two fabulous seasons. So clearly, as a leader, he did something right there,” Ashwin said.
Ashwin added that replacing Rohit Sharma as MI captain in 2024 was never going to be easy.
“It’s not easy to replace an incumbent Indian captain, white-ball captain, such as Rohit Sharma. Five titles in the IPL. He’s won a T20 World Cup. You’ve got a lot of fandom going around in the country. You should have a thick skin to survive social media these days.”
Concern over Hardik’s batting form
Ashwin also raised concerns over Hardik’s batting, saying his timing issues suggest there could be an underlying physical issue.
“With his batting, I found something quite interesting and strange — how late he’s been on the ball. Is he going through something physically? We wouldn’t know. But he’s been late on hard-length deliveries.”
Hardik has scored just 146 runs in eight innings this season, while picking up four wickets at an economy of 11.90. He also missed three matches due to a reported back issue.
Still, Ashwin insisted the all-rounder remains invaluable.
“Hardik is a once-in-a-generation player. You don’t find such players. If India finds itself in a certain T20 mastery now, Hardik’s been a linchpin in that,” he added.
For Chennai Super Kings, today’s clash against Lucknow Super Giants is far more than just another league fixture in IPL 2026. It is effectively a turning point that could either launch Chennai into the top four or leave their playoff hopes hanging by a thread. With a current qualification probability of 56.3%, CSK still control a large part of their destiny, but only if they capitalize against an LSG side already mathematically eliminated from the tournament. While Lucknow may no longer be in the playoff race, they now hold the power to play spoiler against one of the league’s most experienced franchises.
Why this match is crucial for CSK
The equation for Chennai is straightforward: win, and they take a giant step toward qualification; lose, and the pressure becomes overwhelming. Currently sitting on the fifth position, CSK know a victory would instantly change the complexion of the points table and strengthen their late-season momentum heading into two extremely difficult final fixtures against Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans. However, a defeat would leave them exposed to multiple rivals and force them into a near do-or-die situation for the remainder of the league stage.
Scenario 1: CSK defeat LSG
If Chennai beat Lucknow, they will move to 14 points and climb into fourth place, overtaking Punjab Kings, who currently sit on 13 points. More importantly, reaching 14 points would give CSK breathing room heading into their final two games. They would then need just one more victory from matches against SRH and GT to touch the widely accepted playoff safety mark of 16 points. Winning both games would take them to 18 points and virtually guarantee qualification.
Their current Net Run Rate of +0.185 is competitive enough to keep them alive in those calculations, especially if they secure convincing wins in the remaining fixtures.
131119789
Scenario 2: CSK lose to LSG
A loss, however, would dramatically alter Chennai’s playoff picture. Defeat would leave CSK stranded on 12 points with only two matches remaining, meaning they would almost certainly need to win both remaining games against SRH and GT just to reach 16 points. In that scenario, Chennai would no longer have room for any mistakes and would also lose independent control over qualification. Their playoff hopes would then become heavily dependent on other results going in their favor.
A defeat could also significantly hurt their Net Run Rate, creating additional complications if multiple teams finish tied on either 14 or 16 points. That would open the door for rivals like Rajasthan Royals, who remain close behind with games in hand.
Virat Kohli opened up on the deep emotional bond he shares with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, explaining how the franchise not only shaped his own cricketing journey but also helped global stars like AB de Villiers and Chris Gayle become iconic figures among Indian fans.
Speaking on a podcast with RCB, Kohli reflected on the emotional impact RCB has had on players over the years and why finally winning the IPL title after 18 seasons felt uniquely special.
Kohli said the franchise has always had a natural ability to connect with players and elevate them beyond just performances on the field. According to him, AB de Villiers became a beloved icon in India largely because of the love and support he received while representing RCB.
''I mean, it's impact, right? AB became this icon in India after he started playing for us, how the fans embraced him, how they loved him, what he did for the team was beyond the words, the impact he had. Very organically, things fell in place with Chris as well. He was sitting at home, gets called midseason, has the season of his life. He's completely life changed within a week coming to Bangalore. So our franchise, our city, our team, our fans, has been about impacting people in a very natural way,'' Virat Kohli said.
He admitted that he personally experienced that impact more than anyone else during his 18-year association with the franchise, culminating in the long-awaited IPL title triumph last season. Kohli described the emotional scenes after the victory, when he dropped to his knees in tears, as a moment of gratitude rather than relief.
''I felt that impact probably more than anyone over the course of 18 years, till the last year we won the trophy. And I think all those emotions, all those feelings came out in a form of just being on my knees and just holding my hands and saying, thank you, that I could experience this before I stopped playing'' Kohli revealed.
The batting superstar further explained that the 18-year wait made the title victory even more meaningful. He said the emotional weight of years of pressure, expectations and heartbreak made the eventual triumph incomparable to anything he might have felt had RCB won the trophy earlier in their journey.
131116100
''I can for sure, with absolute honesty and clarity, say that it wouldn't have been 5 % of the feeling I had had we wanted in the earlier years, and the accumulation of all that stress and all that pressure. And for it to happen after 18 years, there couldn't have been a better experience for me in my cricketing journey,'' Kohli concluded.
NEW DELHI: When will Hardik Pandya return? How serious is his injury? When will the Mumbai Indians captain be back in action? These are some of the questions dominating social media as Pandya has now missed three consecutive matches for Mumbai Indians.
Sidelined with a back spasm, Pandya first missed Mumbai Indians’ home clash against Lucknow Super Giants on May 4. He then sat out the game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Raipur despite travelling with the squad. In his absence, Suryakumar Yadav led the side.
Pandya also did not travel to Dharamsala for Mumbai Indians’ six-wicket win over Punjab Kings, where Jasprit Bumrah became MI’s third captain this season after Suryakumar missed the game following the birth of his child.
Mumbai Indians all-rounder Shardul Thakur provided a major update on Pandya and confirmed that the all-rounder’s absence from the last three games was injury-related.
Shardul also hinted that Pandya could return for Mumbai Indians’ next match against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on May 20, while dismissing speculation surrounding the MI captain’s future with the franchise.
"Hardik is injured, so he couldn't travel for a couple of games," Thakur said during the post-match media interaction on Thursday.
"He went to Raipur (for the RCB match on May 10), but couldn't play. He is training in Mumbai now and I expect him to be back in Kolkata and play (at Eden Gardens on May 20). Players like them, we always miss the quality," Thakur added.
Mumbai Indians have already been eliminated from IPL 2026, and Pandya’s poor form has been one of the major reasons behind the team’s disappointing campaign.
131115943
The all-rounder has endured a difficult season both as captain and player.
In eight innings, Pandya has scored 146 runs at an average of 20.85 and a strike rate of 136.44, with a highest score of 40. With the ball, he has picked up just four wickets at an average of 61.50 and an economy rate of nearly 11.90 in 20.4 overs.
Nearly two years after stepping away from T20Is and a year after bidding farewell to Tests, Virat Kohli continues to show that the competitive spirit burns undiminished.
After consecutive ducks had briefly raised questions, he responded on Wednesday night in the only way he knows — with a statement innings. And not just any innings, but an unbeaten 105 off 60 balls that powered Royal Challengers Bengaluru to a six-wicket victory over Kolkata Knight Riders in a chase of 193.
This was the chase master at his most familiar and formidable — composed early on, ruthless once the asking rate climbed, and rock-solid through the middle overs when the contest threatened to drift. Kohli brought up his ninth IPL century in 58 deliveries, but the landmark barely interrupted his rhythm. The tempo never dipped, the intent never wavered.
“The celebration was not a big one because we know the importance of the points,” Kohli said after guiding RCB to the top of the table. “The fact that I did not score runs, it eats me up because I have been playing well. It bothers you because that has been the goal — to be the best version. Century or no century, the more important thing is to finish the game.”
After the brief lull, a touch of nerves might have been in-evitable. Instead, the former RCB captain embraced the pressure.
“There is a reason people say pressure is a privilege — it keeps you humble. Good pressure always helps you improve your game. A couple of games that do not go your way, you feel a bit of nervousness, and that helps you. It takes a lot of effort, but it helps your game go up. Those failures are important.”
It was a vintage Kohli show in Raipur. He timed the ball with precision and collected singles and twos with the same intensity that has long defined his batting. “Just my positions at the crease, not doing anything extravagant and backing my game. Picking length, hitting the gaps I can hit,” said Kohli after hitting his 10th T20 century — the most by an Indian in the format.
And yet, beneath the calm and after a record-breaking knock, there remains the hunger that has always driven the IPL’s most-capped player. “I just love batting,” he said. “It is an honour to be competing at this level and against the very best still. I give my heart and soul out there because it is going to finish one day.
“I want to make the most of it, and look forward to pressure situations, where I am feeling a bit of heat, and then I challenge myself to just go for it. Sport teaches you a lot. Even after all these years, it is the love for the game. I love hitting the ball in the middle of the bat. That joy is still there,” said Kohli.
LUCKNOW: Chennai Super Kings will arrive in Lucknow with momentum, opportunity and a growing injury list. Lucknow Super Giants, already out of the playoff race, have only pride left to play for when the two sides meet at the Ekana Stadium on Friday.
For CSK, the stakes are sharper. They are fifth on the table with 12 points and another win could lift them into the top four and strengthen their push for the playoffs.
For LSG, who have managed just three wins from 11 matches, the final stretch is about salvaging a disappointing campaign and giving their home crowd something to cheer about.
The teams are meeting for the second time in less than a week. At Chepauk on May 10, CSK chased down 204 with four balls to spare to beat LSG by five wickets, a result that gave Chennai their third successive win and pushed them to fifth on the points table.
That chase also underlined the firepower CSK now possess. Sanju Samson and Ruturaj Gaikwad gave them a brisk start before Urvil Patel changed the course of the game with a stunning 65 off 23 balls.
Patel’s 13-ball fifty equalled Yashasvi Jaiswal’s record for the fastest half-century in IPL history.
Samson has been one of CSK’s major batting positives this season, while Gaikwad has continued to offer assurance at the top. Patel’s emergence has added a new dimension to the middle order, and Shivam Dube’s late blows in the previous meeting against LSG showed that Chennai have options even when a chase tightens.
Lucknow, however, will believe they let that game slip. Josh Inglis’ 85 off 33 balls had powered them to 91/1 in the powerplay — their highest-ever powerplay score in the IPL — before CSK fought back to restrict them to 203/8. Shahbaz Ahmed’s unbeaten 43 helped LSG recover, but the bowlers could not defend the total.
The head-to-head record also reflects how little there has been between the two sides. In seven IPL meetings so far, CSK and LSG have won three matches each, while one game produced no result.
Chennai’s bigger concern going into the return fixture is player availability. Jamie Overton has been ruled out for the rest of IPL 2026 with a right thigh injury, and CSK have signed South African all-rounder Dian Forrester as his replacement. Overton had taken 14 wickets and scored 136 runs in 10 matches, making his absence a significant blow.
The injury list has already tested CSK’s depth. The franchise had earlier brought in Macneil Noronha as a replacement for injured all-rounder Ramakrishna Ghosh, while several first-choice players have missed parts of the campaign.
Head coach Stephen Fleming said Forrester was already on his way to India.
“He’s making the trip to India as we speak,” Fleming said.
Asked about the injuries in the CSK camp, Fleming said the setbacks were unfortunate rather than a result of overloading players.
“It is unlucky. A couple of the boys came into the competition with niggles. Ramakrishna Ghosh was one of those. We were nursing him through and then he had a fall, so that was unfortunate,” he said.
Fleming said Overton’s all-action style naturally came with some risk.
“Jamie plays the game at 100 miles an hour. So bowling 150, batting hard, there is a chance that he is going to have an injury at some stage. It’s just unfortunate that it was for us at this time,” he said.
He also mentioned Ayush Mhatre’s hamstring issue and insisted that CSK were not pushing players beyond reasonable limits.
“We’re not doing anything to put strain on these guys. There may be a little bit more responsibility for how guys come into the tournament that we need to monitor. But they’ve all been playing a lot of cricket. It’s just one of those things,” Fleming said.
“We’re certainly not turning a blind eye to it. We’re working very hard on recovery and we have a very professional staff with us that have been with us for a number of years. So that area is well looked after.”
On Prashant Veer, Fleming said CSK would continue to be patient despite the investment made in him.
“We’ll have a look at him. A price tag doesn’t mean that you’re automatically ready to go. We’ve been working with Prashant really closely. He’s had four or five opportunities and he’s doing well,” Fleming said.
“He’s a player that we’ve identified for the future for CSK and just because we had to pay a lot because others saw the talent in him as well, it doesn’t mean you have to rush him in. We’re working hard with Prashant and Kartik Sharma and they’re both going nicely.”
LSG, meanwhile, are trying to find meaning in a campaign that has already slipped away. Spin coach Carl Crowe said the franchise still had enough to play for despite elimination.
“We have got important games to play still — our pride as cricketers, our pride in the franchise. We are still expecting to win the next three games, that’s our focus,” Crowe said.
“Obviously, to be out of the competition at this stage is disappointing, but we still have lots to play for. Guys are looking to perform for the franchise, so we are still full steam ahead and very focused on the next three games.”
For CSK, this is a chance to convert resurgence into playoff positioning. For LSG, it is an opportunity to disrupt that charge and remind the league that even a side out of contention can still shape the final-four race.
DHARAMSHALA: For much of the chase, it looked like one of those nights where Mumbai Indians would be left to reflect on what might have been. Instead, it turned into a different kind of story, one that has now begun to follow Punjab Kings with uncomfortable regularity.
Mumbai hunted down a target of 201 with six wickets in hand but the margin alone does not tell you how sharply the game turned in the final overs. It was there, once again, that Punjab lost control. They missed lengths, their plans were all over the place and a total that had felt competitive quickly slipped out of their hands.
The chase began with clarity. Ryan Rickelton ensured there was no early scoreboard pressure, taking advantage of the fielding restrictions with a 23-ball 48. He trusted the bounce early, drove on the up and pulled anything that sat up, helping Mumbai to 59 without loss in the Powerplay.
Punjab did find a way to drag the game back. The pitch still held enough to make strokeplay uncertain, and for a phase, Mumbai’s chase seemed to lose its initial fluency. Wickets fell, the required rate climbed, and the innings threatened to tilt away.
That is when Tilak Varma took ownership of the chase. His unbeaten 75 off 33 balls was not just about power; it was also about timing the ac-celeration. He did not force the issue early in his stay, instead allowing the game to settle before picking his moments.
Even then, the game was not entirely in Mumbai’s control while entering the final stretch. Punjab had an opening, much like they have had in recent matches. What followed, though, was a familiar unraveling.
Will Jacks ensured there would be no late twist. His unbeaten 25 off 10 balls turned the chase into something closer to a heist. Interestingly, Mumbai Indians were led by Jasprit Bumrah in this match, making them the first team in IPL history to have three different Indian captains in a single season.
The death overs told the story Punjab would rather not revisit. It meant that a fifth consecutive loss followed, each one beginning to resemble the last. The scrutiny on Shreyas Iyer, already intense, will only grow sharper after another game where control slipped late.
For Mumbai, there was also a subplot that might carry forward. Jasprit Bumrah began his stint as captain with a win, and while this was just one game, it hinted at a different kind of narrative taking shape.
Earlier, Punjab Kings arrived at 200/8 almost in spite of how the innings unfolded. Mumbai’s mid-innings discipline, led by Shardul Thakur, saw Punjab lose wickets in clusters. Thakur returned with figures of 4/39.
Nahid Rana has been named the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for April 2026 after a stunning run of performances that helped Bangladesh seal a memorable ODI series win over New Zealand.
The young fast bowler claimed eight wickets in three matches against New Zealand, continuing a remarkable streak after also taking eight wickets in Bangladesh’s ODI series against Pakistan in March. His impact across back-to-back series made him the standout performer among the month’s nominees.
It is the first ICC monthly award of Rana’s career and also makes him the first Bangladesh player to win the men’s honour since Mehidy Hasan Miraz received the recognition in April last year.
From tough start to series hero
Rana’s series against New Zealand did not begin smoothly. In the opening ODI, he managed just one wicket and leaked 65 runs, but the right-arm pacer bounced back in style in the second match.
He tore through the visitors with figures of 5 for 32 — the second five-wicket haul of his ODI career — removing key batters early and then returning to finish off the lower order. New Zealand were bowled out for 198 as Bangladesh levelled the series.
Rana carried the momentum into the decider in Chattogram, taking two more wickets to help Bangladesh clinch the series 2-1. He finished with eight wickets at an average of 16.75 and an economy rate of 4.46, earning both Player of the Series and ICC’s monthly award.
‘A series I will always cherish’
Reacting to the honour, Rana said the award held extra meaning because it came after delivering against a top side on home soil.
“It’s a great feeling to be named the ICC Player of the Month after performing well against a world-class side like New Zealand,” Rana said.
“To deliver on home soil made the series even more special. It was a series I will always cherish.”
At just 23, Rana’s rise is gathering pace — and Bangladesh may have found their next pace spearhead for the future.
Today in IPL 2026, a desperately out-of-form Lucknow Super Giants, already eliminated from playoff contention host Chennai Super Kings at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow, with the game kicking off at 7:30 PM IST.
For CSK, the stakes couldn't be higher: sitting on 12 points, Ruturaj Gaikwad's side need a win to keep their playoff push firmly on track.
LSG, meanwhile, will be playing for pride, and could prove dangerous spoilers. LSG posted 203 in their last meeting before CSK chased it down with ease.
The playoff race has heated up beautifully, and things have never been more dramatic than they are right now!
Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants have unfortunately already been knocked out, their campaigns having ended in disappointment.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans have pulled clear at the top, both sitting on 16 points and firmly establishing themselves as the two teams to beat.
Just below them, Sunrisers Hyderabad have done remarkably well to put themselves in third place with 14 points, very much in control of their own playoff destiny.
Punjab Kings, though, are the great story of the season's second half. They had looked completely untouchable early on, going unbeaten in their first seven games. But something has gone seriously wrong as 5 consecutive defeats have left them clinging to fourth spot on 13 points.
Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals are right on their heels, both on 12 points and very much alive. Delhi Capitals, despite sitting on just 10 points, are not yet mathematically done.
Kolkata Knight Riders, however, are in the most precarious position of all: 9 points, but their fate now entirely out of their own hands.
The tournament features 10 teams split into two groups of five each. Every team plays 14 matches during the league stage. You face the four teams in your own group and one team from the opposite group twice. The remaining four teams from the other group you meet just once.

Playoff Qualification for the IPL
The top four teams advance to the playoffs. If teams finish level on points, here's how positions are decided:
Most wins takes priority
If wins are equal, higher net run rate decides
If NRR is also identical, team with most wickets taken gets preference
If everything remains tied, drawing lots settles it
Playoff Qualification Scenarios for Teams in IPL 2026
Points Table Qualification Trends
Based on how previous seasons have played out, here's what teams typically need to make the playoffs:
16 Points (8 Wins):
Pretty much a guaranteed playoff spot
Teams reaching this mark rarely miss out
Puts you in strong position.
14 Points (7 Wins):
Gives you a decent shot at qualification
Not guaranteed though - depends heavily on your net run rate
Other results around you also matter
Usually enough but can go either way
12 Points (6 Wins):
Very difficult to qualify with just six wins
Only happens in exceptional circumstances
Would need several other teams to underperform badly
Net run rate becomes absolutely crucial
Historically, teams with 12 points have mostly missed out
Once the league stage wraps up, the top four teams from the points table move into the playoffs. Their positions are decided purely by points with net run rate acting in as the tiebreaker when needed.
The format gives a massive advantage to teams finishing in the top two spots. The first and second placed teams face each other in Qualifier 1, where the winner books a direct ticket to the final. Meanwhile, the third and fourth placed teams battle it out in the Eliminator, and whoever loses goes home immediately
The Eliminator winner then takes on the Qualifier 1 loser in Qualifier 2 to decide who joins the first finalist. This setup heavily rewards teams finishing in the top two because they get a second life if they lose their first playoff match. The stats back this up too, with six of the last eight IPL champions coming from the top two positions after the league stage.
Two teams travelling in completely opposite directions meet at Ekana on Friday, and the stakes could hardly be more different.
Lucknow Super Giants have had a desperately disappointing campaign. They are not in playoff contention and have won three from 11 matches and are sitting last in the Holy table. Their season has unravelled through a series of limp performances. Yet cricket has a funny way of producing unexpected results, and a team playing freely without pressure can be genuinely dangerous, especially for teams who have some hope of making to playoff in Chennai Super Kings.
CSK, meanwhile, have fought their way back into playoff contention admirably.
Ruturaj Gaikwad's side had stumbled badly early in the season but have since rediscovered their resilience at precisely the right moment. Six wins from eleven matches has kept their dreams very much alive. They are sitting 5th in the table.
LSG vs. CSK prediction: Who Will Win
Make no mistake, this has all the ingredients of a banana skin for Chennai Super Kings. Lucknow, freed from the burden of expectation, could play with a dangerous looseness that makes them genuinely awkward opponents.
Yet objectivity demands acknowledgement of what form and momentum actually say here. CSK have been travelling beautifully recently, their cricket gradually finding the fluency that had deserted them earlier in the season.
LSG's fundamental problem has been consistency. Their batting struggled badly in the first half, and now their bowling has become the soft underbelly. That kind of recurring fragility rarely fixes itself overnight.
Chennai carry genuine purpose into this contest, knowing every point matters enormously. That hunger, combined with their current momentum, should prove the defining difference.
LSG vs. CSK Pitch Report: Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, Lucknow
Ekana Cricket Stadium has not been the high scoring ground this season. But it was changed in the last game when LSG riding on Mitchell Marsh's super 111 scored 209. The opposition RCB also gave it a good crack and scored 203.

Lucknow Super Giants and Chennai Super Kings will meet at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Friday, May 15.
LSG have been eliminated from the tournament and occupy the last position on the points table. There is no route back into the playoff race, regardless of how they perform in the remaining fixtures.
What they do have, though, is an opportunity to use these matches constructively by experimenting with combinations, giving fringe players some game time, and working out where things went wrong so they can return better prepared next year.
Meanwhile, CSK's 2026 campaign began with three consecutive defeats, which left many questioning whether the side had it in them this year. What followed was a quiet but steady recovery, and Chennai have worked their way back into serious playoff consideration.
Dropping points against a bottom-placed side would be a damaging result at this stage of the competition, and CSK know they cannot afford it.
LSG vs CSK: Predicted playing XI and starting lineups
LSG predicted playing XI: Mitchell Marsh, Josh Inglis, Nicholas Pooran, Rishabh Pant (c) (WK), Aiden Markram, Akshat Raghuwanshi, Himmat Singh, Mohammed Shami, Mohsin Khan, Avesh Khan, Prince Yadav

CSKpredicted playing XI: Ruturaj Gaikwad (capt), Sanju Samson (wk), Sarfaraz Khan, Dewald Brevis, Shivam Dube, Urvil Patel, Prashant Veer, Anshul Kamboj, Noor Ahmad, Gurjapneet Singh, Mukesh Choudhary
The BRSABV Ekana Stadium pitch this season has made a habit of keeping batters honest. The average score this season has sat around 150, which is noticeably below what other IPL venues have offered and bowlers have had plenty to work with.
Bowlers – Anshul Kamboj, Noor Ahmed, Mohammed Shami, Akeal Hosein (vc)

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) won the IPL 2025 title, claiming their first-ever IPL trophy after 18 seasons. In a thrilling final at Ahmedabad, RCB defeated Punjab Kings (PBKS) by 6 runs. RCB posted 190/9 in 20 overs, with captain Rajat Patidar leading the charge and Virat Kohli contributing a steady 43.
Punjab Kings, despite a valiant 61 off 30 balls from Shashank Singh, finished at 184/7 in their 20 overs. Key bowling performances for RCB included Krunal Pandya (2/17) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (2/38), who took crucial wickets at the death overs.
When is the IPL 2026 season?
IPL 2026 kicked off on March 28 with reigning champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru hosting Sunrisers Hyderabad in Bengaluru. The league will run till 31 May.

NEW DELHI: Punjab Kings (PBKS) suffered their fifth straight defeat in IPL 2026 as Mumbai Indians (MI) registered a six-wicket win in a crucial clash on Thursday in Dharamsala. Shardul Thakur’s four-wicket haul and Tilak Varma’s unbeaten 75 helped Mumbai chase down 201 in 19.5 overs and further dent Punjab’s playoff hopes.
Batting first after being put in, Punjab got off to a strong start through Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh. The pair added 50 runs in 33 balls, taking the side to 55 for 1 in the powerplay. Priyansh made 27 before Deepak Chahar cleaned him up in the sixth over.
Prabhsimran then added another 57 runs with Cooper Connolly as Punjab crossed the 100-run mark in the 12th over. The opener made 57 and reached his fifty with a single before hitting another six off Shardul Thakur over backward square leg.
However, Mumbai fought back strongly in the middle overs. Shardul, who had conceded 15 runs in his first over, removed Prabhsimran and skipper Shreyas Iyer (4) within three balls to shift momentum.

Raj Bawa also contributed by dismissing Connolly and then taking a sharp catch at short midwicket to remove Suryansh Shedge off Shardul’s bowling. Punjab kept losing wickets as Shashank Singh and Marco Jansen departed cheaply.
Despite the collapse, Azmatullah Omarzai played an important hand in the death overs. He scored 38 off 17 balls with two sixes and a four. Vishnu Vinod and Xavier Bartlett also chipped in as Punjab collected 53 runs in the final three overs to finish at 200 for 8.
For Mumbai, Deepak Chahar took 2 for 36 while Shardul finished with 4 for 39.
Chasing 201, Mumbai began aggressively through Ryan Rickelton, who attacked from the start despite Rohit Sharma struggling at the other end. Rickelton smashed 48 off 23 balls with four fours and four sixes as Mumbai raced to 59 without loss.
Punjab pulled things back briefly after removing Rickelton, Naman Dhir and Rohit Sharma. Yuzvendra Chahal bowled a tight spell and dismissed Rohit as Mumbai slipped to 89 for 3.
Tilak Varma then steadied the innings. He added 61 runs with Sherfane Rutherford, who scored 20, before taking charge in the closing overs. Punjab had a chance to dismiss Tilak, but Marco Jansen dropped a difficult catch off Arshdeep Singh’s bowling.
With 72 needed from the last five overs, Tilak and Rutherford attacked Chahal and collected 20 runs in one over. Even after Rutherford fell, Tilak continued the chase confidently.
He hit Marco Jansen for two sixes and a four in the 18th over, which went for 22 runs and pushed Mumbai ahead in the game. Needing 15 runs in the final over, Tilak finished the chase with two sixes.
Tilak remained unbeaten on 75 off 33 balls as Mumbai reached 201 for 4 in 19.5 overs.
The defeat left Punjab needing wins in both their remaining matches to stay alive in the race for the playoffs.
NEW DELHI: Already eliminated Mumbai Indians kept the IPL 2026 points table wide open with a stunning six-wicket win over Punjab Kings in Dharamsala on Thursday. Led by Jasprit Bumrah for the first time in IPL history, MI registered their fourth win of the season to take their tally to eight points, though they remained stranded in ninth spot.
It was a fifth successive defeat for Punjab, and their playoff chances are getting thinner with each loss. PBKS, who led the points table in most of the first half of the league stage, remain fourth with 13 points from 12 games, but they now face a must-win situation. Two wins from their remaining two matches will guarantee a playoff spot.
Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru remained top of the IPL 2026 points table after their thumping six-wicket victory over Kolkata Knight Riders on Wednesday.
RCB lead the standings in the business end of the league stage with 16 points and an impressive net run rate of +1.053, edging past Gujarat Titans (16 points) on superior NRR.
The defeat left KKR stranded in eighth spot, keeping their playoff hopes alive by the thinnest of margins. Their four-match winning streak ended against RCB.
After RCB and GT, Sunrisers Hyderabad and PBKS occupy the remaining two playoff spots with 14 and 13 points respectively.
The rest of the standings remain unchanged after Match 58 of the 70-match league stage.
Chennai Super Kings are fifth with 12 points, ahead of Rajasthan Royals on superior NRR, with both teams having three matches left.
Below them, Delhi Capitals and KKR are still mathematically alive in the playoff race. DC have 10 points from 12 games, while KKR have nine points from 11.
MI and Lucknow Super Giants are the only two teams eliminated so far this season.
Punjab Kings openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh became the first uncapped opening pair to cross 1,000 partnership runs in the IPL. The milestone was reached when the team score moved to 24 during PBKS’ match against Mumbai Indians on Thursday.
The duo also added a 50-run stand in the match before the partnership was broken by Deepak Chahar, who dismissed Priyansh Arya for 22.
Prabhsimran Singh, who scored 549 runs in 2025 and 439* in 2026, also became only the third uncapped Indian player to score 400 or more runs in multiple IPL seasons. The other two are Suryakumar Yadav (2018, 2019 and 2020) and Abhishek Sharma (2022 and 2024).
Earlier, Mumbai Indians skipper Jasprit Bumrah won the toss and chose to field first against Punjab Kings in their IPL 2026 match in Dharamsala on Thursday.
Bumrah is leading Mumbai Indians for the first time in the IPL. Regular captain Hardik Pandya is recovering from a back spasm, while stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav is unavailable due to personal reasons.
Punjab Kings came into the match after four straight defeats at a key stage of the season. After seven matches, they were at the top of the table, but have since dropped momentum in the race for a top-two finish.
Mumbai Indians have also had a poor season overall, with three wins from 11 matches and ninth place on the points table.
At the toss, Bumrah said: "We have decided to bowl first. We saw the last game and felt that maybe with the cold weather coming down, the wicket would settle down. I didn't think that I would be a Test captain before becoming MI captain (smiles). As much as we can, we can play three games left, and we want to enjoy and maybe ruffle a few teams. Surya is not here for personal reasons, and Allah is not there as well,"
PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer said: "We would have bowled first as well. The wicket looks a bit drier. Still don't know how the pitch will play, so just being positive about it. We should stop thinking about what has gone wrong. We have to think about being in good shape and having a positive mindset. Harpreet Brar, Xavier Bartlett and Azmatullah Omarzai come in."

R Ashwin called on BCCI to fix a rule that denied Punjab Kings a run after DRS reversal.
The on-field decision was overturned, but no leg bye was awarded under current rules.
Punjab Kings still posted 200 for 8, with Prabhsimran top-scoring with 57 off 32 balls.
R Ashwin demands DRS rule change after Punjab Kings lose a run despite winning review
Ravichandran Ashwin called upon the BCCI to introduce a DRS reversal rule in IPL after Punjab Kings were denied a run on the last ball of the innings against Mumbai Indians on Thursday evening in Dharamshala.
On the final delivery of Punjab's innings, Vishnu Vinod was struck on the pad by a low full toss angled into the off side by Jasprit Bumrah. The on-field umpire raised the finger.
Punjab reviewed the call and Ball Tracking confirmed that the impact was outside off stump. Subsequently, the dismissal was overturned.
But here is where the problem lies. Under the current rules, when a batter is given out, and the ball does not hit the bat, no leg bye can be awarded even if the review successfully overturns the decision.
The run that would have counted as a leg bye was not given. Punjab lost a run they should have had, despite winning the review they used.
What did R Ashwin say about the rule change?
Ashwin did not hold back on X. He argued that the wrong call had directly cost Punjab a run and demanded the BCCI act immediately rather than wait for the ICC to address the issue.
He wrote: "The wrong decision has cost Punjab a run, this rule needs to change ASAP! Just like how the “IMPACT SUB” is an IPL rule, the DRS reversal should also be brought into the IPL even if the ICC delays it for some reason. #MIVPBKS #IPL."
The controversy aside, Punjab Kings put together a competitive total of 200 for 8. Prabhsimran Singh led from the front with a 32-ball 57, while Azmatullah Omarzai played a brilliant cameo of 38 off just 17 balls.
For Mumbai, Shardul Thakur was the standout bowler with four wickets for 39 runs. Deepak Chahar took two, while Corbin Bosch and Raj Bawa each claimed one.
The Cricket News Opinion: If the rule is broken, BCCI should fix it
Ashwin is right. A team winning a review should not be punished for it.
The whole point of DRS is to correct mistakes, and a system that overturns an incorrect dismissal but still withholds a legitimate run has a fundamental flaw in it.
There is no reason for the BCCI to wait for an ICC directive when a simple, fair fix is available right now.

The Indian men's senior selection committee, chaired by Ajit Agarkar, is likely to pick squads for the one-off Test against Afghanistan and the three ODIs that follow on May 19. As TimesofIndia.com reported on May 11, a message has already been sent to the hopefuls, asking them to gradually increase their workload for the five-day fixture scheduled right after the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL).
Shubman Gill is expected to lead a strong batting unit for the fixture and a decision on the bowling group is expected closer to the selection day. With Jasprit Bumrah likely to be rested for the contest that doesn't form part of the World Test Championship, plenty of fresh faces are expected to make the cut. It includes Gurnoor Brar, who has impressed the selectors with his ability to consistently hit the good areas, at pace and with sharp movement.
Regarding the ODI selection, no major surprises are expected, but a significant decision could be made concerning the second wicketkeeper option.
Rishabh Pant has been part of the set-up but has fallen out-of-favour due to his inconsistent returns with the bat in the IPL. With Ishan Kishan's stocks on a bull run since his return to the T20Is, it will not be a surprise if he gets a look in. His name was discussed in previous meetings, too, owing to his red-hot form; being a left-hander and ability to give the head coach the flexibility to bat anywhere in the order.
KL Rahul is in form, continues to enjoy the management's backing, and will remain the side's first-choice wicketkeeper-batter in the foreseeable future. The ODI World Cup next year is in South Africa and Rahul's experience will be invaluable.
The next big discussion is set to be around Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and the spin-bowling all-rounder role.
Jadeja has had underwhelming returns with both bat and ball in the format, and his batting approach could push him towards the exit door as he bats at a position where the management expects more intent. Yet, will it be Jadeja or Axar Patel? Or someone else? It's anybody's guess at the moment, but a discussion is set to happen regarding this slot.
131092544
It is further learnt that informal discussions have already begun with regard to the World Test Championship, the new T20I cycle and the 50-over World Cup next year. With crucial calls expected to be taken, it remains to be seen if the announcements happen the same day as the selectors meet or if there is a delay.
NEW DELHI: In a bid to strengthen India’s pace-bowling resources, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is contemplating hiring three fast-bowling coaches at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru.
TOI understands that former India pacers Lakshmipathy Balaji and VRV Singh are frontrunners for two of the positions. P Krishna Kumar, who has produced encouraging results with the Jammu and Kashmir team, is also in contention. Former India pacers Vinay Kumar and Tinu Yohanan were also interviewed for the role.
The position of fast-bowling coach at the CoE has remained vacant since Troy Cooley completed his tenure late last year.
It is learnt that the CoE plans to appoint one fast-bowling coach specifically to work with bowlers coming through the age-group system, starting from the Under-16 level. Another coach will focus on bowlers in the scheme of the Indian team, as well as those training at the CoE to sharpen their skills, while the third will assist in coordinating the transition pathway for fast bowlers. The CoE already follows a similar structure for strength and conditioning coaches and physiotherapists.
Sources said the BCCI and the CoE have realised the need for a more robust approach towards developing a larger pool of fast bowlers. The national selectors had introduced a fast-bowling contract scheme in 2024 for a group of emerging pacers, but the initiative was discontinued the following year.
It has also been observed that several young fast bowlers have struggled to sustain progress after breaking onto the scene. The India A programme is no longer considered as robust as it was during Rahul Dravid’s tenure overseeing developmental teams and the erstwhile National Cricket Academy (NCA). During that period, a group of bowlers remained under the close supervision of Dravid and former bowling coach Paras Mhambrey. Umran Malik’s decline is being viewed as an example of why raw fast bowlers require sustained guidance and monitoring.
Apart from the fast-bowling appointments, it is learnt that former Rajasthan wicketkeeper Dishant Yagnik could also take over as a fielding coach at the CoE. Meanwhile, Dhananjay Kaushik has been promoted to head of sports medicine, replacing Nitin Patel.
NEW DELHI: Virat Kohli’s stunning return to form against Kolkata Knight Riders did not just earn applause from fans — it also brought a heartfelt message from IPL great Dwayne Bravo.
After Kohli’s unbeaten 105 powered Royal Challengers Bengaluru to a six-wicket win in Raipur, Bravo walked into the RCB dressing room to personally congratulate the former India captain.
In a video later shared by RCB on social media, the KKR mentor was seen hugging Kohli and telling him: “Play as long as possible, the sport needs you.”

The moment quickly went viral among cricket fans, many of whom praised the mutual respect shared between two of T20 cricket’s biggest names.
Kohli had entered the contest under pressure after registering back-to-back ducks, but the veteran batter responded in trademark fashion. Chasing a challenging 193, he anchored the innings brilliantly with an unbeaten 105 off 60 deliveries, hitting 11 fours and three sixes. He also stitched together a crucial 92-run stand with Devdutt Padikkal, whose 39 helped steady the chase after an early wicket.
The century was Kohli’s ninth in IPL history and another reminder of his unmatched consistency in run chases. His controlled approach ensured RCB reached the target with five balls remaining and climbed to the top of the IPL 2026 points table on net run rate.
Earlier, KKR had posted a competitive 192/4 thanks to an impressive 71 from Angkrish Raghuvanshi and a late flourish from Rinku Singh, who remained unbeaten on 49. Cameron Green also contributed 32 during the middle overs.
Despite Kartik Tyagi’s three wickets, KKR could not stop Kohli from dominating the chase.
For Bravo, who has shared many IPL battles with Kohli over the years, the admiration was clear. His message summed up what many in world cricket continue to feel — players like Kohli are rare, and the game is better when they are still around.
In the IPL, where boundaries and high strike rates are often the primary currencies, there exists a quiet, more lethal metric: The Dot Ball. Even without taking wickets, a sequence of dot deliveries can increase pressure and force attacking shots and, in turn, errors from the batters. Over the years, some of the league’s most successful bowlers have built their records not just through wickets, but through sustained control.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar holds the record for bowling the most dot balls in IPL history. Across 201 innings, the Indian pacer has delivered 1964 dot balls, with 43.6% of his deliveries not conceding a run. He has also taken 220 wickets in the tournament while maintaining an economy rate of 7.68 through his IPL career.
Close behind him are two of the IPL’s most accomplished spinners - Sunil Narine and Ravichandran Ashwin.
Narine, who ranks second on the list, has bowled 1822 dot balls in 197 innings with an economy rate of 6.78. The longtime Kolkata Knight Riders spinner has taken 203 wickets and owns a dot-ball percentage of 39.8.
Ashwin sits third with 1663 dot balls in 217 innings. The off-spinner has taken 187 wickets in the league while maintaining an economy rate of 7.2. Around 35.31% of his deliveries in the IPL have been dot balls.
Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja complete the top five list for most dot balls bowled in IPL history.
Bumrah, widely regarded as one of the best T20 pacers of his era, has bowled 1,511 dot balls in 156 innings. His dot-ball percentage stands at 42.17%, while he has also claimed 186 wickets in the tournament.
Jadeja, who has spent most of his IPL career with Chennai Super Kings, has bowled 1,384 dot balls in 234 innings. The left-arm spinner has taken 178 wickets with an economy rate of 7.68.
Record-breaking spells
The record for the most dot balls in a single IPL match is shared by Deepak Chahar and Suyash Sharma. Playing for Chennai Super Kings against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2019, Chahar bowled 20 dot balls in his four-over spell, conceding runs off only four deliveries. While Suyash , playing for RCB against DC , also bowled 20 dot balls in this year's IPL.
For a single IPL season, the record remains with Dale Steyn. Representing Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2013, Steyn bowled 219 dot balls during the campaign while taking 19 wickets at an economy rate of 5.66.
Here is the list of top 5 greatest IPL dot ball bowlers:
Punjab Kings face Mumbai Indians in a must-win clash to strengthen their playoff hopes, but a looming rain threat in Dharamshala during match time could impact Punjab Kings’ chances.
The Dharamshala weather forecast indicates a high 55% to 60% chance of rain and thunderstorms for tonight's match, making a rain interruption or a complete washout highly possible. The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a 'Yellow Alert' for the Kangra Valley, as heavy downpours and overcast skies have already disrupted pre-match practice sessions at the HPCA Stadium.
Punjab Kings currently sit in 4th place with 13 points and a Net Run Rate (NRR) of +0.428 from 11 matches. They are closely pursued by Chennai Super Kings (+0.185 NRR) and Rajasthan Royals (+0.082 NRR), who both have 12 points.
If the IPL 2026 clash in Dharamsala is washed out due to rain, both teams will receive one point each, resulting in a “No Result.” However, with Mumbai Indians already mathematically eliminated from the playoff race, the shared points would have very different consequences for the two sides.
What it means for Punjab Kings (PBKS)
A washout would take PBKS to 14 points, helping them maintain a slight cushion over chasing teams like Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, who are both currently on 12 points.
However, the bigger concern for Punjab would be the impact on their top-two hopes. A no-result would cap their maximum possible points tally at 18 if they go on to win their remaining two matches against Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Lucknow Super Giants. That would significantly reduce their chances of overtaking table-toppers RCB and Gujarat Titans, both of whom already sit on 16 points. It would also mark Punjab’s second abandoned game of the season, making them the only team in the current top four relying on split points rather than outright victories.
What it means for Mumbai Indians (MI)
For Mumbai Indians, who are already out of playoff contention, a washout would mainly deny them the opportunity to play spoiler against a direct rival in the playoff race. The single point would, however, move MI slightly ahead of Lucknow Super Giants in the lower half of the table, marginally helping their effort to avoid finishing at the bottom of the standings.
DHARAMSHALA: Punjab Kings are not rattled by the ongoing rumours of team discord being circulated on social media, their assistant bowling coach Trevor Gonsalves said here on Wednesday, insisting the team remains focused on cricket even as speculation swirls around the off-field conduct of certain players amid talk of team discord. After having started the season in spectacular fashion, the team now has four losses on the trot.
Gonsalves said the players are “big enough” to handle online noise and that the coaching staff’s priority is to “prepare the team for the matches ahead” rather than “chasing every circulating rumour” on social-media platforms.
“Any blogger or any person can go and put up anything on social media and there will be lakhs of people agreeing to it and getting a kind of sadistic joy out of it,” Gonsalves said, adding, “We are more concerned about the cricketing part.”
He reiterated that nothing has changed internally and that the dressing room remains confident about qualifying for the playoffs. “Three games are left. We hope to give our best. There are some areas of our game we need to iron out. We’ve done that and we’ll come back strongly,” Gonsalves said.
Asked about head coach Ricky Ponting’s handling of the situation, Gonsalves painted a picture of calm leadership. “Ricky (Ponting) has been marvellous. He knows how to deal with such stuff. I’ve seen absolute professionalism in the way he handles the players as well as such situations. Being too much into social media can be good as well as bad for the players, but there’s a limitation and a line has been drawn,” Gonsalves said.
The sequence of events that got them here has been well-documented. A clip from pacer Arshdeep Singh’s travel vlog went viral after eagle-eyed viewers alleged that Yuzvendra Chahal was seen vaping on the flight. Arshdeep was subsequently directed by the BCCI to refrain from posting vlogs. Then came reports about Prabhsimran Singh gaining 10kg of weight, players staying up till the early hours, avoiding practice and some even missing flights. A rift between the captain and senior players was also alleged, for good measure.
The PBKS management issued a strong statement, initially calling out “sports journalists” specifically, before editing the post to remove that phrase. Prabhsimran, for his part, let his torso do the talking, posting a story on Instagram flexing his physique near a waterfall in Dharamshala, accompanied by a shushing emoji.
Meanwhile, PBKS co-owner Preity Zinta tweeted, “There’s a difference between criticism and calculated misinformation. Healthy debate around the game is welcome, but the deliberate spread of fake narratives to damage individuals, the team, or the brand should not and will not be taken lightly. I urge everyone including verified voices and media professionals to exercise responsibility before amplifying unverified information.”
With the league entering its decisive phase, Punjab is banking on senior players to deliver under pressure. Gonsalves suggested the current situation could, in fact, bring the best out of the squad. “These are big cricketers and they rise at the right moment. I think now is the right time,” he said.
NEW DELHI: Virat Kohli returned to form in style with an unbeaten 105 as Royal Challengers Bengaluru beat Kolkata Knight Riders by six wickets in IPL 2026 on Wednesday.
Chasing 193 in Raipur, RCB got home with five balls to spare, thanks mainly to Kohli’s calm and controlled knock after a rough patch that included two straight ducks.
The former RCB captain kept his celebration quiet after reaching his century, saying the team’s situation in the points table mattered more than personal milestones. Kohli explained that pressure motivates him and helps him improve.
“The celebration wasn't a big one because we know the importance of points. There's a reason why people say pressure is a privilege. Good pressure always makes you improve your game,” Kohli said after winning the Player of the Match award.
He added, “My positions at the crease, not trying anything extravagant, find the gaps, staying in the present, I was able to back my game, risk-free cricket.”
Kohli hit 11 fours and three sixes in his 60-ball innings while Devdutt Padikkal chipped in with 39.
Earlier, KKR had posted 192/4 with useful contributions from Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Cameron Green. Kartik Tyagi impressed with the ball for KKR, taking 3/32.

The win pushed RCB to the top of the IPL table with 16 points from 12 matches. Captain Rajat Patidar praised the team’s all-round effort and said the side is staying focused on one game at a time.
“It feels great. Everyone came in at different stages and did their job for the team,” Patidar said. Praising Kohli, he added, “I don't have words, but he is used to doing great things.”
Virat Kohli added yet another golden chapter to his legendary T20 career on Wednesday, becoming the fastest batter in history to complete 14,000 runs in the format during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s victory over Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2026.
The RCB superstar reached the landmark in just 409 innings, comfortably breaking the previous record held by Chris Gayle, who had taken 423 innings to get there. Kohli’s latest achievement once again underlined his incredible longevity and consistency in the shortest format of the game.
Fewest innings to 14,000 T20 runs:
409 — Virat Kohli
423 — Chris Gayle
431 — David Warner
468 — Jos Buttler
505 — Alex Hales
633 — Kieron Pollard
Kohli also strengthened his position as India’s highest run-scorer in T20 cricket history.

9,797 — Shikhar Dhawan
9,654 — Suryakumar Yadav
8,830 — Sanju Samson
8,654 — Suresh Raina
8,602 — KL Rahul
The historic night became even more special as Kohli smashed his ninth IPL century to guide Royal Challengers Bengaluru to a crucial six-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders.
Coming into the game after back-to-back ducks, Kohli responded in champion fashion with an unbeaten 105 off 60 balls, hammering 11 fours and three sixes in a masterclass chase under pressure.
The knock also took him to the top of another elite IPL list.
Most IPL hundreds:

Kohli also extended his dominance against Kolkata Knight Riders, registering his ninth 50-plus score against the franchise, the most by any batter in IPL history.

Chasing 193 in Raipur, RCB were under pressure after recent batting struggles, especially with Kohli enduring a lean patch that included two consecutive ducks. But the former captain once again delivered when his side needed him most.
He stitched together a crucial 92-run partnership with Devdutt Padikkal, who contributed 37 off 27 balls, before calmly finishing the chase in 19.1 overs.
The victory lifted Royal Challengers Bengaluru to the top of the IPL 2026 points table with 16 points, level with Gujarat Titans but ahead on net run rate.
Earlier, Kolkata Knight Riders had posted 192 for four after Angkrish Raghuvanshi played a brilliant knock of 71 off 46 deliveries. The young batter struck seven fours and three sixes while adding important partnerships with Cameron Green (32) and Rinku Singh, who remained unbeaten on 49.
However, the night ultimately belonged to Virat Kohli, who silenced critics after consecutive failures and once again proved why he remains one of the greatest T20 batters the game has ever seen.
Pakistan are preparing to replace Shan Masood with Babar Azam as Test captain after the ongoing Bangladesh series, news agency PTI reported on Wednesday, following Pakistan’s 104-run defeat in the opening Test in Dhaka on Tuesday.
There has been criticism in Pakistan over the team’s performance and Masood’s captaincy after the defeat. Masood also struggled with the bat and failed in both innings.
Discussions have started over bringing Babar back as Test captain for the remaining matches of the current World Test Championship cycle, PTI reported while quoting a source. Pakistan still have seven Tests left this year.
Masood has led Pakistan in Tests since December 2023. Under him, Pakistan have lost 11 of their 15 matches.
Babar missed the first Test against Bangladesh because of a knee injury and is expected to return for the second Test starting May 18.
"Some influential figures in the Pakistan Cricket Board also want Babar back as captain and believe this is the right time to give him another run at captaincy," the source said.
The PTI report added that there is also support within the team for Babar to return as Test captain.
All three Pakistan captains across formats are currently part of the Bangladesh tour squad, including ODI captain Shaheen Shah Afridi and T20I captain Salman Ali Agha.
"If Babar plays the second Test and regains his batting form, he is a strong contender to come back as captain. Initial exchanges with some board officials indicate he is also not averse to becoming captain again," a source was quoted as saying by the news agency PTI.
The source also said that the plan is to first bring Babar back as Test captain and later prepare him to take over as ODI captain before next year’s World Cup.
Babar was captain across all three formats between 2019 and 2023 before stepping down after the 2023 World Cup in India.
He later returned as T20 captain for the 2024 T20 World Cup but stepped down again after Pakistan’s poor campaign.
The source said Masood himself was disappointed after the defeat in Dhaka and is now seriously considering taking up a permanent role with the Pakistan Cricket Board.
PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi had offered Masood the role of Director of International Cricket and Player Affairs last year, but he had decided to continue until the end of the current World Test Championship cycle.
BBL faces growing SA20 threat after signing Babar Azam and Rizwan
In the next two seasons, Australia’s biggest T20 league might see a massive exodus of talent due to increasing financial rivalry among the franchise leagues.
According to reports in The Age, there is growing concern that the Big Bash League (BBL) may no longer be able to provide its cricketers financial security in comparison to the rival South African league, SA20, that keeps attracting top talent through shorter formats and increased remuneration.
This was further emphasised by the recent addition of the two Pakistan stars Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan to the BBL.
The 2025-26 period revealed that Babar pocketed about AUD 270,000-320,000, putting him among the most expensive foreign imports of the BBL. Mohammad Rizwan, also a Platinum-category cricketer, is estimated to have bagged approximately AUD 270,000.
BBL raises salaries for Australian stars but still trails rival T20 leagues
In terms of the salary packages for top Australian players, the BBL has made considerable progress in the past few years.
However, the Aussies were still not the top-earning players last year. Overseas stars were the most expensive players in each team, earning more than local stars.
Former CA chief executive Malcolm Speed pointed out this concern, saying:
"There’s a premium for international players in the BBL – they get about AUD 100,000 more than the top Australian players," Speed told SEN. "Get rid of that. The Australians deserve to be paid as much as everyone else."
Pat Cummins had previously mentioned on the Business of Sport podcast that if salaries do not improve relative to the cricket world's finances, Australian players may start looking for alternatives - away from the national team and the BBL.
“For example, during the Hundred this season, we’ve got two Test matches against Bangladesh. All our guys that will play in that Test match have opted out of going to the Hundred auction, but that’s not going to be the case forever.
“Some of our guys are saying no to half a million pounds for 20 days’ work to go and play those two Test matches against Bangladesh. I think it is a tension point. At the moment, our guys are so keen to play for Australia that they’re happy to forgo that, but I don’t think we can accept that that is going to be the case forever."
Why SA20 is becoming a major threat to the BBL
While there is no doubt that the main strength of SA20 lies in its lucrative nature, convenience could easily be its second greatest selling point.
With a compressed calendar, the league offers international cricketers a chance to earn big while saving a good part of their year. Additionally, with direct IPL franchise investment, the league has greater financial security than ever and an improved global image.
From the perspective of Australian cricketers, the league seems like an easy choice. While offering top-notch competition and increased exposure along with the promise of a generous pay packet, the league doesn’t ask for the physically draining commitment of playing an entire BBL season.
In contrast, the BBL continues to face scheduling issues, as Australia’s Test cricketers often miss long stretches of the season due to national commitments, affecting both the league’s star power and consistency.
The Cricket News Opinion: 2028 could become a turning point for Australian cricket
The reason why there is an emphasis on 2028 is because the existing ICC Future Tours Programme (FTP), which ends in 2027, will have to be renegotiated by the cricketing boards within the new franchise-dominated environment.
There is already apprehension about the space left for bilateral cricket in light of increasing T20 leagues and extended IPL windows. This may increase the appeal of T20 franchises, such as SA20, to Australian players.
Australia won’t be bereft of cricket before 2028, with the 2025-26 Ashes and the Test tour of India in 2027, as well as ICC tournaments such as 2026 T20 World Cup and the 2027 ODI World Cup.
What worries, therefore, isn’t the absence of cricket before 2028 but what happens after 2028 when the present FTP agreement expires and franchise leagues prove more lucrative and less taxing than bilateral cricket.
Additionally, the 2027-28 season will see Australia play lower-profile Test series against Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Teams with the most playoffs appearances in IPL history
Consistency has always been one of the biggest measures of success in the IPL, and the teams with the most playoff appearances have often been the strongest sides in the tournament’s history.
Chennai Super Kings lead the list with the most playoff qualifications, having missed the top four only a few times in their IPL journey. The Mumbai Indians are next with 11 playoff appearances, although their early exit in 2026 means that number will not increase this season.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who won the IPL title in 2025, have also reached double digits in playoff qualifications and continue to remain regular contenders in the league.
IPL playoffs qualifiers: Season-by-season list (2008–2025)
The history of the IPL playoffs has seen different teams dominate different eras of the tournament. In the early years, teams like Rajasthan Royals and Deccan Chargers made a strong impact before Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians went on to dominate the league for over a decade.
In recent seasons, newer teams like Gujarat Titans have quickly established themselves as strong contenders, while Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s resurgence has added more competition to the playoff race and title battle.

NEW DELHI: Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru reclaimed top spot in the IPL 2026 points table on Wednesday with a thumping six-wicket victory over Kolkata Knight Riders in Raipur.
RCB talisman Virat Kohli played a match-winning unbeaten 105 off 60 balls to help the team chase down 193 in 19.1 overs for their eighth win of the season. They now top the standings in the business end of the IPL 2026 league stage with 16 points and an impressive net run rate (NRR) of +1.053, overtaking Gujarat Titans (16 points) on superior NRR.
The defeat left KKR stranded in eighth spot, keeping their playoff hopes alive by the thinnest of margins. KKR’s four-match winning streak ended against RCB despite posting a competitive target.
After RCB and GT, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Punjab Kings occupied the remaining two playoff spots with 14 and 13 points respectively.
The rest of the standings remain unchanged after Match No. 57 of the 70-match league stage.
Chennai Super Kings are fifth with 12 points, ahead of Rajasthan Royals on superior NRR, with both teams having three matches left each.
Below them, Delhi Capitals and KKR are still mathematically alive in the playoff race. DC have 10 points from 12 games, while KKR have nine points from 11 games.
Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants are the only two teams eliminated so far in the season.
Virat Kohli returned to form with his ninth IPL century as Royal Challengers Bengaluru defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by six wickets in their IPL 2026 match in Raipur on Wednesday. Chasing 193, RCB reached the target with five balls remaining, powered by Kohli’s unbeaten 105 off 60 balls.
Coming into the match after two successive ducks, Kohli looked in control from the beginning. He celebrated with a fist pump after getting off the mark and quickly shifted gears by hitting four boundaries in a single over off Vaibhav Arora. He attacked both pace and spin through the innings and ensured the required rate stayed under control throughout the chase.
Kohli reached his fifty off 32 balls and shared a key 92-run partnership with Devdutt Padikkal, who made 39 off 27 balls with seven fours. Kohli later brought up his century with a single off Arora, registering his ninth IPL hundred, the most by any batter in the tournament’s history. Jos Buttler is second on the list with seven centuries.

The win lifted RCB to the top of the points table, moving above Gujarat Titans. There were celebrations in the RCB camp after the finish as the side saw their senior batter return to form in a crucial game.
The match had started 75 minutes late because of rain and a wet outfield, but the Raipur crowd stayed back and witnessed a high-scoring contest.
Earlier, Angkrish Raghuvanshi played the best innings of his IPL career to guide KKR to 192 for four. Batting at No.3, the 21-year-old scored 71 off 46 balls with seven fours and three sixes. It was his fourth half-century of the season.
KKR had a shaky start after being asked to bat first. Ajinkya Rahane managed only 19, while Finn Allen scored 18 off eight balls before Bhuvneshwar Kumar had him caught behind. Josh Hazlewood then dismissed Rahane with a short ball after the KKR captain had attacked Jacob Duffy in the previous over.
At 56 for two after the powerplay, Raghuvanshi rebuilt the innings. He added 68 runs with Cameron Green, who scored 32 off 24 balls, and then stitched a 76-run stand with Rinku Singh.
Raghuvanshi mixed caution with aggressive strokeplay. He struck boundaries regularly on the off-side, played a powerful short-arm pull off Duffy and hit Krunal Pandya for a six over the ropes. He also smashed a slower delivery from Rasikh Salam straight back over the bowler’s head. His innings ended with a run-out on the last ball of the innings.
Rinku Singh remained unbeaten on 49 off 29 balls, hitting three fours and two sixes. He missed his fifty by one run but helped KKR finish strongly.
Brief Scores:
Kolkata Knight Riders: 192 for 4 in 20 overs (Angkrish Raghuvanshi 71, Cameron Green 32, Rinku Singh 49; Bhuvneshwar Kumar 1/34).
Royal Challengers Bengaluru: 194 for 4 in 19.1 overs (Virat Kohli 105 not out, Devdutt Padikkal 39; Kartik Tyagi 3/32).
NEW DELHI: Virat Kohli’s first run against Kolkata Knight Riders on Wednesday brought an unusually emotional reaction from the RCB icon, with his animated fist-pumping celebration quickly becoming one of the most talked-about moments of the match in Raipur.
After back-to-back ducks in his previous two innings, Kohli looked visibly relieved when he finally got off the mark during IPL 2026 action, prompting huge cheers from the crowd.
The moment came in the first over of RCB’s chase of 193, when Kohli worked a swinging delivery from debutant Saurabh Dubey to square leg for a quick single. As soon as he crossed over, the veteran punched the air in celebration, with fans roaring in approval.
The reaction was striking because it came from a single run, but context made it far bigger. Kohli had entered the match without scoring in his last two outings, making this his first run in three matches.
That brief release of emotion instantly spread across social media. A short clip of the celebration has already gone viral.
Watch - the fist-pump celebration after Kohli’s first run:
The match was his 279th appearance in the league, moving him clear at the top of the all-time list. Dhoni and Rohit remain tied on 278.
That landmark made the occasion significant, but it was his first single — not the record — that triggered the loudest reaction.
Earlier, KKR posted 192/4 after a superb 71 from Angkrish Raghuvanshi. He added key stands with Cameron Green and Rinku Singh to power Kolkata to a competitive total.
Former England wicketkeeper Sarah Taylor has been appointed as fielding coach of England’s senior men’s Test team for the upcoming series against New Zealand, with ECB Director of Cricket Rob Key hailing her as “one of the best in the business”.
Taylor, regarded as one of the greatest players in women’s cricket history, will join the England men’s setup on a short-term basis for the New Zealand series. The 37-year-old previously worked with the England Lions side under Andrew Flintoff and had also been involved with Sussex men’s team as well as Manchester Originals.
Her impressive work behind the scenes has now earned her a role with the senior Test side while regular fielding coach Carl Hopkinson remains unavailable because of his IPL commitments with Mumbai Indians.
Speaking about Taylor’s appointment on Wednesday, Rob Key said the ECB had been hugely impressed by her methods and coaching approach.
"I just think she's one of the best in the business at what she does. She's been outstanding, and she's worked a lot with Andrew Flintoff and Ed Barney (performance director). They can't speak highly enough of her. So from what we can see, she's one of the best in the business," Key told mediapersons.
"We've been thoroughly, unbelievably impressed with (Taylor) and the way that she goes about her business," Key said.
He also explained the reason behind Carl Hopkinson’s absence from the Test setup for the upcoming series.
"Carl Hopkinson, as is the nature of the cricket world that we have at the moment, he's working with Mumbai Indians. He has a lot of stuff that he does for them, so we'll still use him at some point, just not for this series."
Taylor represented England in 226 international matches across formats during a glittering playing career and remains widely respected as one of the finest wicketkeepers the women’s game has produced.
Meanwhile, England have also announced their squad for next month’s opening Test against New Zealand at Lord’s following a disappointing 4-1 Ashes defeat earlier this year.
Zak Crawley has been dropped after a poor run of form, with Durham opener Emilio Gay earning a maiden call-up and expected to slot in as a specialist opener. Hampshire fast bowler Sonny Baker and Somerset wicketkeeper-batter James Rew are the other uncapped players included in the 15-man squad.
Fast bowler Ollie Robinson has returned to the England setup after spending two years out of the Test side, while leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed has also been recalled.
England squad for first Test vs New Zealand: Ben Stokes (captain), Rehan Ahmed, Gus Atkinson, Sonny Baker, Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Ben Duckett, Matthew Fisher, Emilio Gay, James Rew (wk), Ollie Robinson, Joe Root, Jamie Smith (wk), Josh Tongue.
Punjab Kings assistant bowling coach Trevor Gonsalves has made it clear that the franchise is staying locked in on cricket despite increasing chatter and criticism surrounding the team on social media during a tense phase of IPL 2026.
Punjab Kings, who finished runners-up last season, have recently found themselves at the centre of online discussions because of the off-field conduct of certain players. However, ahead of the side’s important clash against Mumbai Indians, Gonsalves insisted the dressing room remains focused only on performances and preparation.
Speaking to reporters, the PBKS assistant coach acknowledged the growing influence of social media in modern cricket but stressed that experienced players understand how to deal with external noise.
“Yes, today social media plays a big role (and) the news (in media) plays a big role. How the big players handle themselves against all these things is absolutely important,” Gonsalves said when asked how the team is handling the talk on social media and criticism of the squad.
Gonsalves added that senior players do not need guidance on managing criticism or online reactions, saying the squad is mature enough to handle such situations on its own.
“You don't need anyone to teach them, first of all. They are big enough. They know how to control themselves. As far as we are concerned, we are more concerned about the cricketing part,” he said told reporters on the eve of MI's contest against Punjab Kings.
He also pointed towards the unpredictable nature of online conversations and misinformation, where opinions spread rapidly regardless of facts.
“Any blogger or any person can go and put up anything on the social media and there are lakhs of people agreeing to it and saying yes or no.”
“But, frankly speaking, we are not too concerned about what the social media says. Now, at present, we are only concerned and worried of tomorrow's game (and) how we are moving forward in the cricketing part,” he added.
Earlier, Punjab Kings issued a strong message through their official social media account, urging fans and content creators to avoid spreading unverified claims.
"Criticism, banter, and opinions are part of sport. Fake stories and made-up narratives for cheap engagement are not. We urge everyone to verify facts before spreading misinformation for attention or traction," the franchise posted.
Punjab Kings co-owner Preity Zinta also addressed the growing online narratives surrounding the team and called for greater responsibility while sharing information publicly.
"There’s a difference between criticism & calculated misinformation. Healthy debate around the game is welcome, but the deliberate spread of fake narratives to damage individuals, the team, or the brand should not & will not be taken lightly. I urge everyone including verified voices & media professionals to exercise responsibility before amplifying unverified information. Thank you," she tweeted.
Punjab Kings’ statement comes during a difficult phase in their campaign. The franchise had enjoyed a dream start to IPL 2026, remaining unbeaten in their opening seven matches with six victories while one match ended without a result because of rain. Their aggressive approach and consistency quickly established them as one of the strongest sides of the tournament.
However, momentum has shifted sharply in recent weeks. Four straight defeats have complicated Punjab’s playoff hopes and increased the pressure heading into the final stretch of the league stage.
At the same time, the franchise has also been dealing with off-field attention. Star spinner Yuzvendra Chahal recently became a talking point online after a video allegedly showing him vaping on a flight surfaced across social media platforms. Opener Prabhsimran Singh has also been part of online discussions regarding his fitness and reported weight gain.
Despite the setbacks, Punjab Kings remain firmly in the playoff race. They are currently placed fourth on the table with 13 points, and victories in their next two matches would secure qualification for the playoffs for a second consecutive season.
With crucial fixtures against Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Lucknow Super Giants still to come, Punjab Kings now enter a defining stage of their IPL 2026 campaign both on and off the field.
A total of 10 players have scored centuries in IPL 2026 so far. Interestingly, seven out of the nine centurions have remained not out at the end of the innings.
Virat Kohli became the latest centurion in IPL 2026, after reaching his century against Kolkata Knight Riders on Wednesday in Raipur. Kohli played a match-winning knock as RCB claimed the top spot on the points table.

AB de Villiers has issued a measured but cautionary message on the rapid rise of Rajasthan Royals teenager Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, suggesting that while the 15-year-old’s white-ball explosiveness is extraordinary, his long-term development will depend on how he adapts to the demands of multi-format cricket.
Speaking on the ‘For The Love of Cricket’ podcast hosted by former England fast bowler Stuart Broad, the former South Africa star reflected on the youngster’s potential and the challenges that may lie ahead if he moves beyond T20 cricket too early.
Sooryavanshi has taken the IPL by storm this season, scoring 440 runs in 11 innings at an average of 40.00 and a striking strike rate of 236.55. His impact has been underlined by a century and two half-centuries, with fearless hitting against elite bowling attacks featuring the likes of Jasprit Bumrah, Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar drawing widespread attention and even calls for an India T20I promotion.
However, de Villiers urged caution, pointing out that the teenager’s red-ball foundation is still in its early stages. In first-class cricket, Sooryavanshi has managed 207 runs in eight matches and 12 innings at an average of 17.25, with a single half-century.
“I do not know how he is going to last, to be honest. At his age, the talent is incredible. But I would like to see him in other formats. In Test cricket, he doesn't yet know what he is in for. A lot of things will change unless someone, who is a really good manager, tells him to be a T20 specialist for the rest of his life. If that's all he plays, it'll be a very long and successful career,” he said.
De Villiers believes exposure to ODIs and especially Test cricket would help the youngster uncover new layers of his game, both mentally and physically, even if the journey is not straightforward.
“If he does start nibbling around with ODIs and, in particular, Test cricket, he will discover a whole different area of his cricket mentally and physically. He definitely has the talent to overcome all the obstacles that may come his way. But it will not be an easy ride, and it will be a rocky road. I hope he goes that route and tries to play Test cricket for his country,” he said.
The teenager’s numbers at junior and franchise level underline why he is being seen as a generational batting talent. In the recent U19 World Cup, Sooryavanshi finished as the second-highest run-scorer with 439 runs in seven matches at an average of 62.71 and a strike rate of 169.49, including a century and three fifties, with a highest score of 175. He also struck 30 sixes in the tournament, breaking Dewald Brevis’ previous record of 18 sixes in the 2022 edition, the most ever in U19 World Cup history.

Across his U19 ODI career, he has accumulated 1,412 runs in 25 innings at an average of 56.48, with a strike rate above 165, including four centuries and seven fifties, with a best of 175.
In T20 cricket overall, the 15-year-old has scored 1,105 runs in 28 matches at an average of 40.92 and a staggering strike rate of 215.39, including four centuries and three fifties, with a top score of 144. In List A cricket, he has 353 runs from eight innings at 44.12, striking at 164.95, with one century and one fifty, and a best of 190.
As debate grows over whether Sooryavanshi should be fast-tracked into India’s T20I setup, de Villiers’ message is clear: the talent is undeniable, but the real test will come if and when he steps into the longer and more demanding formats of the game.
The Pakistan Cricket Board announced a 28-man initial squad for the upcoming ODI series between Pakistan and Australia.
Saim Ayub has been left out of the team and the all-rounder will not feature in the home series against reigning world champions Australia.
The preliminary squad does not feature some of the regular stars, like captain Shaheen Afridi, who is currently with the Pakistan Test team for their ongoing series against Bangladesh.
Aamir Jamal, Abdul Samad, Abrar Ahmed, Ahmed Daniyal, Akif Javed, Arafat Minhas, Faisal Akram, Fakhar Zaman, Haider Ali, Hamza Nazeer, Haris Rauf, Hunain Shah, Khawaja Mohammad Nafay, Maaz Sadaqat, Mehran Mumtaz, Mohammad Faik, Mohammad Hasnain, Mohammad Salman Mirza, Naseem Shah, Saad Baig, Saad Masood, Sahibzada Farhan, Shadab Khan, Shamyl Hussain, Sufiyan Muqeem, and Usman Khan.
Two U-19 players to train with the senior team at the National Cricket Academy
After announcing the tentative squad, the PCB revealed that the selected players will undergo a training camp at the National Cricket Academy. The seven-day camp will start on Friday, May 15 and run until May 21.
Two U-19 fast bowlers, Abdul Subhan and Ali Raza, have been included in the squad and the rookie stars will get training from the academy coaches.
The official statement from the PCB read: "Twenty-eight players will feature in the NCA White-Ball Camp, which will commence from Friday, 15 May, the PCB announced today. The seven-day camp will conclude on Thursday, 21 May, with players taking part in training sessions as well as practice matches.
"During the camp, the NCA coaching staff will work alongside the men’s team white-ball coaching staff to better prepare the players for the series. The camp also includes Pakistan U19 fast bowlers Abdul Subhan and Ali Raza, who represented Pakistan in the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup held in Zimbabwe and Namibia earlier this year."
RCB head into the contest high on confidence after pulling off a thrilling two-wicket win over Mumbai Indians, while KKR have revived their playoff hopes with four consecutive victories following a disastrous six-match winless run that included five defeats and one no-result.
Ahead of Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s crucial IPL 2026 clash against Kolkata Knight Riders, former India batter Mohammad Kaif believes the possible absence of spinner Varun Chakaravarthy could hand a significant advantage to RCB.
A major factor behind KKR’s resurgence has been Varun Chakaravarthy’s return to form. The mystery spinner has claimed eight wickets in his last four matches and has once again become central to Kolkata’s bowling attack. However, his availability for the RCB clash remains doubtful after he picked up an injury while attempting to stop a shot from Ishan Kishan during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. He was later seen limping during his spell against Delhi Capitals.
According to ESPNCricinfo, KKR assistant coach Shane Watson said Varun was “sore and being monitored.” The spinner was present during training and bowled briefly, though not at full intensity, before spending the remainder of the session stretching and interacting with teammates.
Speaking on JioStar’s ‘Match Centre Live’, Kaif said Varun’s absence would significantly benefit RCB, especially considering Virat Kohli’s comfort against quicker spinners.
“If Varun Chakaravarthy is not available, then it is a big plus for RCB. He has come back into form recently, was bowling really well and hitting the right areas. Virat Kohli is someone who enjoys playing against faster spin bowlers,” Kaif said.
Kaif also pointed out that KKR would ideally want Varun fit in order to maintain their preferred bowling combination involving “two pacers, one all-rounder and three spinners.”

He further praised Anukul Roy for his impact in the powerplay, saying his role has allowed Sunil Narine to be used more strategically in the middle overs.
“Anukul Roy has done a wonderful job for them in the powerplay. That gives them the flexibility to use Sunil Narine slightly later, where he can control the middle-over phase,” Kaif added.
New Delhi: Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya resumed full-throttle training and spent over three hours at the Reliance Corporate Park on Tuesday. Hardik missed the side's two matches against Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2026 due to a back spasm and is unlikely to link-up with the squad for the fixture against Punjab Kings in Dharamsala on Thursday.
While MI continue to maintain that he is recovering from a back spasm, the intense training session — of which he uploaded a couple of videos on social media — definitely raises eyebrows. Is there more than what meets the eye? TimesofIndia.com reported that all hasn't been well in the dressing room and Hardik's absence from action does raise some pertinent questions.
The five-time IPL champions reached Dharamsala from Chandigarh on Tuesday afternoon, but neither Hardik nor stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav travelled with this batch. Suryakumar was very recently blessed with a baby girl and is understood to have left for Mumbai, along with Hardik and a few other players, right after the match in Raipur on Sunday. The rest of the squad moved to Chandigarh, and then continued their journey to Dharamsala.
It remains to be seen when Suryakumar will join the squad, as he linked up on the day of the match against the RCB. The franchise is hopeful of having him back with them closer to the contest against the PBKS.
Mumbai Indians are in the middle of a forgettable season, languishing in the ninth spot on the points table. The remaining matches present them an opportunity to not only test their bench but also rest some of their superstars who have had underwhelming performances.

Suryakumar and Tilak Varma, apart from one hundred and one half-century, have had ordinary outings with the bat and Bumrah deserves rest after fighting a lonely battle this edition. Head coach Mahela Jayawardene continues to back his "core players," it seems time has come to test faces who can consistently serve the franchise in upcoming editions.
