Ex-Knicks center Mitchell Robinson confirms cause of broken hand

In the lead up to the New York Knicks’ NBA Finals appearance against the San Antonio Spurs, there was a mystery surrounding center Mitchell Robinson and his broken hand.

Reports revealed Robinson had fractured the fifth metacarpal in his right hand before the series, but the specifics of how that happened were a mystery, with neither the team nor Robinson choosing to address it.

But Robinson has now confirmed what led to his broken hand. He revealed he struck his truck in a moment of panic after his youngest brother was involved in a car accident.

Here’s some of the explanation Robinson posted to Facebook on Sunday.

“Without going into details about my upbringing, I am extremely protective of my siblings, whom I care for deeply. Upon returning to New York, I received an unexpected phone call, and my family members contacted me, informing me that my youngest brother had been involved in a car accident. I did not see the messages until I arrived home late that night,” Robinson said.

“As the eldest sibling, I felt a deep sense of concern, and I immediately went into panic mode,” he added. “I began returning calls and texts, and when I FaceTimed my brother, I thought he was deceased. He was wearing a neck brace, unresponsive, and not speaking. I broke down in tears, feeling like a failure for not being able to protect my siblings. Being 910 miles away, I felt helpless. In a moment of frustration, I banged my hand on my truck.”

Robinson also addressed those who were quick to pass judgement on the situation before knowing the details.

“Before judging someone, it is essential to understand their circumstances, which may not be publicly known,” Robinson stated.

Of course, Robinson ended up playing in every NBA Finals game and didn’t appear to be slowed down much or at all by his injury.

The exact reason behind why the Knicks and Robinson stayed quiet on the cause of his broken hand isn’t known exactly, but it’s fair to assume both sides just didn’t want it to become more of a distraction ahead of the biggest series in franchise history.

The most important thing is that Robinson’s brother appears to be OK.

Robinson, who was the longest-tenured Knicks player, will be playing for a different team for the first time in his career next season.

Robinson has signed a three-year, $47 million contract with the Boston Celtics.

While the former Knicks center going to one of the team’s rivals was surprising, Robinson’s departure was not, as it was assumed he wouldn’t be back after owner James Dolan said he wouldn’t go into the second apron.

New York has since signed Robinson’s replacement after inking Andre Drummond to a one-year, $3.9 million deal.
