Cristo Fernández, 'Ted Lasso' actor, plays for El Paso Locomotive FC in USL Cup match

Fútbol became real life for Cristo Fernández on Saturday night.

The “Ted Lasso” actor went from the fictional pitch for AFC Richmond to taking the field for El Paso Locomotive FC of the United Soccer League. Facing New Mexico United, Fernández entered the game as a substitute for Rubio Rubínin the 79th minute of the Locomotive’s 2-0 defeat in a USL Cup match.

El Paso and New Mexico were in a scoreless tie until the 85th minute when Joseph Quiah scored in the left corner for United. Zico Bailey found the net four minutes later on a cross from Jake LaCava for a 2-0 lead. Attendance for the match was announced at 5,011.

Locomotive FC announced on Wednesday that Fernández was added to the club’s 18-man matchday roster for a home game at Southwest University Park versus New Mexico.

“Yes, it’s really him,” Locomotive FC included in Fernández’s bio on the club’s website.

Saturday’s match was actually the second time Fernández saw game action versus New Mexico. He played 30 minutes in a preseason friendly between the two clubs on Feb. 28.

Fernández, 35, signed with the Locomotive in May after training with the team for a two-month trial and playing in the aforementioned preseason friendly. Demonstrating that this wasn’t just a lark for the actor, Fernández also trained on trial with the second team of the MLS’ Chicago Fire FC in March and scored twice in a scrimmage.

“Fútbol has always been a huge part of my life and identity, and no matter where life has taken me, the dream of competing professionally never truly left my heart,” Fernández said in a statement with Locomotive FC’s announcement.

Prior to becoming an actor and gaining fame as Dani Rojas for Richmond’s Greyhounds, Fernández had aspirations of becoming a professional footballer. He played for Mexico’s Tecos Fútbol Club as a 15-year-old before a knee injury derailed those ambitions.

With a record of 5-5-4, Locomotive FC currently holds seventh place in the USL’s Western Conference standings. They visit Tulsa FC at ONEOK Field next Saturday at 9:30 p.m. ET.

Aces crush Mercury, 106-58, for third-largest blowout in WNBA history

The Phoenix Mercury began a two-game road trip against the two best teams in the WNBA by nearly making history — but not the kind of history that anyone associated with the team might choose to remember.

The Las Vegas Aces defeated the Mercury 106-58 on Saturday, a 48-point loss that was the third-worst in WNBA history. A'ja Wilson led all scorers with 21 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. And in her WNBA debut, Justine Pissott added 19 points off the bench, shooting 5-for-6 on 3-pointers.

Believe it or not, this was a rematch of the WNBA Finals, which the Aces won in a four-game sweep for their third championship in four seasons. The Mercury also defeated the Aces 99-66 in their 2026 season opener.

The Aces took a 29-9 lead after the first quarter and had a 57-22 edge at halftime. With nearly seven minutes remaining in the game, Las Vegas led by 54 points, 92-38.

The largest blowout in WNBA history is a 59-point win by the Minnesota Lynx over the Indiana Fever, 111-52, in 2017. The Lynx put together a 37-0 run in that game.

Monique Akoa Makani scored 13 points to lead the Mercury and Lexi Held added 11 points. They were the only Mercury players to score in double figures, as the team shot 35% from the floor. Phoenix lost its third consecutive game to drop to 8-16, the fourth-worst record in the WNBA.

"The reality is, we can't have any more of these," Mercury coach Nate Tibbetts said afterward. "It's time for us to make a move if we're going to make a move. You don't want to come out and play like that."

"Extremely disappointed for everyone involved — the players, the staff, the organization, the fans, everybody," he added. "That was completely unacceptable."

Pissott scored her 19 points in just 10 minutes. Her five 3-pointers were the most ever for a player making her WNBA debut.

A second-round pick in this year's draft (No. 25 overall) by the Indiana Fever out of Vanderbilt, the 22-year-old played through training camp on a player development contract. After being waived this week, she quickly signed with the Aces.

Up next for the Aces is a prime-time matchup with the Fever scheduled for 9 p.m. ET. Caitlin Clark is expected to play for Indiana, but will be on a restriction of 20-25 minutes as she continues to recover from a back injury, according to head coach Stephanie White.

The Mercury play the Lynx — tied for the WNBA's top record with the Aces at 17-6 — on Monday in Minnesota.

Point guard Mario Saint-Supéry leaves Gonzaga to sign with Euroleague club Valencia

In a shocking development, Gonzaga will go into the 2026-27 men’s college basketball season without its starting point guard.

Sophomore Mario Saint-Supéry has opted to sign with Euroleague squad Valencia instead of returning to Spokane, Washington — and just four months before the upcoming season tips off. Valencia announced the signing on social media and Saint-Supery said goodbye to the Bulldogs and their fans with an Instagram post.

According to CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander, Saint-Supery has agreed to a four-year deal worth $15 million to play in Spain.

Saint-Supery’s decision comes less than two weeks after Gonzaga officially joined the newly formed Pac-12 conference as a member in men’s and women’s basketball, in addition to Olympic sports.

Several college basketball analysts and observers projected the Bulldogs to be ranked among the top 10 to 15 teams in the nation before the 2026-27 season tips off. But a team that already looked to be thin in the backcourt, especially early in the season, has lost its starting point guard.

Gonzaga’s non-conference schedule is also loaded with top-ranked opponents including Purdue, Michigan State, Arkansas and Duke. The Zags are also scheduled to play in the Players Era Festival, which could match them up against Baylor, Alabama and defending national champion Michigan.

The WNBA has a new regular-season attendance record after the Dallas Wings and Toronto Tempo played in front of 20,996 fans on Friday at Montreal’s Bell Centre, home of the NHL’s Canadiens.

Paige Bueckers scored 34 points with 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 steals to lead the Wings to a 108-95 win over the Tempo. Arike Ogunbowale added 20 points with 7 assists, while Jessica Shepard also scored 20 and grabbed 17 rebounds.

Dallas trailed 85-84 after the third quarter, following a 3-pointer by the Wings; Odyssey Sims. But the Tempo only scored 10 points in the fourth quarter while Dallas put up 24. Alysha Clark scored all 10 of her points for the Wings in the final 10 minutes.

The win improved Dallas’ record to 15-8, maintaining the No. 4 seed in the WNBA playoff standings. The Wings have won four consecutive games and seven of their past 10.

Toronto was led by Marina Mabrey, who also scored 34 points while shooting 6-for-9 on 3-pointers and 8-for-8 at the free-throw line. Laura Juskaite added 25 points and Isabella Harrison tallied 18 points and 8 rebounds.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to win before a record crowd in Canada’s second-largest city. The expansion Tempo dropped to 9-13 with the defeat, two games back from the WNBA’s final playoff spot.

Friday’s attendance in Montreal topped the previous record of 20,711 fans, set on Sept. 19, 2024 at Washington, D.C.’s Capital One Arena for a matchup between the Washington Mystics and Indiana Fever that finished off Caitlin Clark’s rookie season.

The league’s all-time attendance record of 22,076 fans was set twice by the Detroit Shock during the 2003 and 2007 WNBA Finals. The 3-on-3 women’s league Unrivaled drew 21,490 fans for a January doubleheader at Philadelphia’s Xfinity Mobile Arena.

Tempo play in Montreal and Vancouver for Cross-Canada Series

The Tempo will play one more game in Montreal this weekend, hosting the New York Liberty on Sunday.

"Tonight was about so much more than breaking a record", Tempo president Teresa Resch said in a statement.

"Seeing more than 20,000 fans come together in Montreal to set a new WNBA regular-season attendance record is a powerful statement about the future of women's basketball in Canada,” she added. “From day one, we've believed this team could unite fans across the country, and tonight they showed the world what's possible.”

As Resch mentioned, the Tempo are attempting to bring professional women’s basketball throughout Canada. The team will also play two regular-season games in Vancouver at the end of August against the Portland Fire and Las Vegas Aces.

Caleb Wilson scores 35 points for Bulls in NBA Summer League debut, but loses 97-96 to Cameron Boozer's Grizzlies

Caleb Wilson, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, made his Summer League debut on Friday for the Chicago Bulls with 35 points, setting a rookie record.

That topped the 27 scored by No. 1 pick AJ Dybantsa for the Washington Wizards on Thursday in a win over the Utah Jazz.

Wilson immediately asserted himself on the court in a matchup with No. 3 pick Cameron Boozer and the Memphis Grizzlies. However, Boozer's team earned the 97-96 win in Las Vegas.

The 6-foot-10 forward scored the Bulls' opening five points of the game, hitting a 3-pointer at the top of the arc and following that up with a midrange jumper from the baseline.

However, the play that made observers take notice most was likely a chase-down block in the second quarter. Wilson's pass at the 3-point line was stolen by the Grizzlies' Javon Small. But the rookie raced down the court as Small appeared to have a fast-break layup and blocked the shot from behind.

— NBA (@NBA) July 11, 2026

Wilson demonstrated a surprising 3-point shooting touch in his first NBA action, hitting 7-of-11 shots from behind the arc, including two in the closing eight seconds of the game.

The rookie showed confidence from the outside, taking shots off the dribble and nailing a few step-back 3s. For a player who shot 26% on only 27 long-range attempts during his lone season at North Carolina, his accuracy was eye-opening.

35 POINTS FOR CALEB WILSON ON THE NIGHT!

— NBA (@NBA) July 11, 2026

Overall, Wilson shot 10-of-21 from the floor, with 5 rebounds, 2 steals and 3 blocks in an impressive all-around performance.

The Bulls' other first-round pick, Dailyn Swain, finished with 7 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Jaylin Sellers added 15 points, 4 boards and 4 assists for Chicago.

Chicago's next Summer League game will be against No. 2 pick Darryn Peterson and the Jazz on Monday, That's followed by a matchup with Dybantsa and the Wizards on Tuesday.

Cameron Boozer continues to impress in Summer League play

Playing in his third Summer League game, Boozer looked comfortable and was one of the best players on the court. He threw down back-to-back dunks early in the first quarter, one-upping Wilson on the second one by poking the ball away from him and going in for the basket.

Boozer led the Grizzlies with 23 points, shooting 7-for-12 from the floor, while grabbing 6 rebounds with 4 assists, 1 steal and 1 block. In a Summer League environment where players sometimes experiment with their game, Boozer brought the ball up several times for Memphis and created offense in the half-court.

Cedric Coward added 17 points for Memphis, grabbing 10 rebounds with 5 assists and 2 blocks, at times drawing attention away from the two rookies. Javon Small followed with 15 points and Olivier-Maxence Prosper scored 13 with 5 boards.

Up next for the Grizzlies in Summer League play is a matchup with the Dallas Mavericks on Monday at 7 p.m. ET.
