Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a left knee injury during Sunday’s loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. It was a defeat that officially ended Kansas City’s playoff hopes. The injury happened late in a tight game as the Chiefs attempted a comeback, compounding what has already been a difficult season for the team.

Mahomes went down during a crucial drive while Kansas City trailed by three points. Rolling to his right in search of a play, the quarterback took a hit from a Chargers defender and appeared to hyperextend his knee as he fell to the turf. He remained on the ground for several moments before teammates and staff helped him to his feet.

Although Mahomes managed to walk off the field, he was seen limping on the sideline. Backup quarterback Gardner Minshew II replaced him for the remainder of the game as the Chiefs tried to keep their season alive. The Chargers ultimately sealed a 16-13 victory when Minshew threw an interception on the final drive.

The loss proved decisive for Kansas City. Entering the weekend, the Chiefs needed a win to stay in the playoff hunt. Victories by the Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars, combined with the loss to Los Angeles, knocked Kansas City out of postseason contention. Mahomes finished the game 16-of-28 for 189 passing yards with one interception. He also scored a rushing touchdown in the first quarter, accounting for the Chiefs’ lone trip to the end zone.

After the game, Patrick Mahomes addressed the injury and the season-ending loss in a post on X, sharing his disappointment and resolve. “Don’t know why this had to happen,” he wrote. “And not going to lie it’s hurts. But all we can do now is Trust in God and attack every single day over and over again. Thank you Chiefs kingdom for always supporting me and for everyone who has reached out and sent prayers. I Will be back stronger than ever.”

The injury capped a bruising campaign for Mahomes, who entered the game already dealing with multiple physical setbacks.
