Austin Reaves returns to Lakers against Nets after calf strain sidelined him since Christmas

NEW YORK (AP) — Austin Reaves will play for the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night in Brooklyn after missing the last 19 games with a strained left calf.

Coach JJ Redick said Reaves would come off the bench and play restricted minutes in his first game since Christmas.

Redick said the Lakers have missed Reaves in every facet of the game.

“He's an All-Star-level player and of course you're going to miss him in a number of ways,” Redick said.

Reaves may have been an All-Star if not for his absences. He missed three games with the injury in December, then was in just his second game back when he was hurt again against Houston on Dec. 25.

Reaves is averaging 26.6 points, 6.3 assists and 5.2 rebounds. Redick said the Lakers have had their full complement of players only twice this season, and LeBron James said after they lost Sunday to the New York Knicks that Reaves' absence made it difficult to evaluate the team's potential.

“Unfortunately our All-Star 2-guard has been out for a minute and that’s a big piece of our team,” James said. “So it’s kind of hard to see what we can really, truly be.”

Eugenio Suárez happy to be back in Cincinnati after finalizing $15 million, 1-year contract

CINCINNATI (AP) — Ever since he was traded in 2022, Eugenio Suárez was hoping there was some way he could eventually return to the Cincinnati Reds.

On Tuesday, the reunion became official after he passed his physical and finalized a $15 million, one-year contract that includes a 2027 mutual option.

“I said at the time, maybe I end my career in Cincinnati and five years later here I am,” Suárez said. “I think this is the gift. To be back where everybody knows you and where you feel comfortable.”

Suárez was with the Reds from 2015 through 2021, then was traded to Seattle during spring training four years ago. He hit 189 home runs during those seven seasons, including 49 in 2019.

The Reds were one of many teams interested in Suárez at the trade deadline last year, but they didn’t want to part with key prospects. He was traded from Arizona to Seattle on July 31 and finished fifth in the majors with 49 home runs and fourth with a career high 118 RBIs. He batted .228 overall with an .824 OPS.

Reds president of baseball operations Nick Krall said the front office kept tabs on Suárez throughout the offseason. Krall approached owners Bob and Phil Castellini last week there was a possibility of landing Suárez, but that it would exceed the payroll budget for the upcoming season.

Ownership gave the go ahead to proceed and the two sides came to an agreement on Sunday.

“We extended for it because it’s a player we wanted. This was something we were able to do above and beyond,” Krall said.

The 34-year-old slugger has been a third baseman for most of his 12-year major league career, but Suárez will be primarily be a designated hitter in the Reds' lineup with some games at third base or first.

Gold Glove winner Ke’Bryan Hayes will be at third base and touted prospect Sal Stewart will be primarily at first base while also seeing some games at second and third. Spencer Steer, who was second on the Reds with 21 home runs last season, will platoon at first, second, left and right field.

Suárez joins a Reds' squad that went 83-79 last season and made the postseason for the first time since 2020. They lost to the eventual World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers in two games in the NL Wild Card series.

Cincinnati goes into spring training with a young but solid starting pitching staff along with another young star in shortstop Elly De La Cruz. The only thing they were lacking was a power hitter until signing Suárez.

Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati has averaged 2.67 home runs per game since it opened in 2003. That is the second-highest homer rate in the majors among ballparks to host at least 1,200 games.

Suárez has 101 homers at Great American and is one of five players with at least 100.

“I think that right now when I see the lineup, we look very good. The pitching staff been great and the offense has been there,” he said. “I’m here now to help the team, not to be a superhero, but to be my best version and put everything on the field, do my best, try to help the team win games. That’s more important to me.”

To open a roster spot, the Reds designated catcher Ben Rortvedt for assignment. He claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers on Nov. 12.

Chris O'Leary returns to Chargers as defensive coordinator, replacing mentor Jesse Minter

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — Chris O'Leary is back on familiar ground with the Los Angeles Chargers, giving him a built-in level of comfort as he takes over as defensive coordinator.

He's replacing his mentor Jesse Minter, who left to become head coach of the Baltimore Ravens last month.

“It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” O'Leary said Tuesday.

He was safeties coach under Jim Harbaugh in 2024, Harbaugh's first in charge of the Bolts. O'Leary left last year to work as defensive coordinator and safeties coach at Western Michigan, where the Broncos went 10-4 with one of the stingiest defenses in the country.

But O'Leary never forgot the Chargers. He'd watch their games, then install Broncos terminology and have his players watch to see how NFL players executed schemes. He'd also break down games and send his takes to Minter.

O'Leary said he wasn't looking to leave Kalamazoo, let alone get back in the NFL. But when Minter left for Baltimore, he couldn't resist applying to the Chargers.

Minter's advice?

“Be myself. We’ve done things at a really high level but go be you and be great,” O'Leary recalled.

He first met Minter at Indiana State in O'Leary's hometown of Terre Haute. O'Leary was a receiver and Jesse Minter and his father Rick Minter were assistant coaches. Rick Minter is currently a senior analyst with the Bolts.

“They knew I'd be a coach when I'd talk back to them on scout team, talking trash,” O'Leary said. “That’s kind of where they saw the competitive fire. I knew they were great defensive coaches. I knew they had the competitive insanity that I have.”

O’Leary got his first job as a graduate assistant at Georgia State in 2015 when Jesse Minter was the school’s defensive coordinator.

“I didn’t know anything about the defensive line. I walked in and every day was a struggle,” O'Leary said. “I learned competitiveness, passion, energy, violence within the white lines. Those things are what I love in football. That’s where my love of defense grew.”

O’Leary also spent six seasons at Notre Dame before his first stint with the Chargers.

In 2024, O'Leary worked closely with Derwin James and Elijah Molden. James was a second-team All-Pro and O'Leary calls him “one of my favorite players I’ve ever worked with and coached because of how contagious his energy is and how he great he wants to be.”

With one year of experience calling plays, O'Leary believes he's the right person to help the Chargers reach their ultimate goal of winning a Super Bowl.

“Being able to be creative, being able to put guys in different positions and start to learn how to piece the personnel together, I have a lot of confidence,” he said. “I feel I have a mastery of those areas just through my relationship with Coach Minter, through being in this building.”

Canada picks Sam Bennett to replace Anthony Cirelli at the Olympics

MILAN (AP) — Sam Bennett was added Tuesday to Canada’s men’s hockey team at the Olympics in Milan as an injury replacement for Anthony Cirelli.

Hockey Canada announced the change roughly 48 hours since Cirelli was injured in Tampa Bay’s outdoor Stadium Series game Sunday night against Boston. Bennett also left Florida’s game Monday night because of an upper-body injury.

Bennett was one of only a handful of players from Canada’s 4 Nations Face-Off roster left off the Olympic team last year. Bennett was the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as playoff MVP last year when the Panthers won the Stanley Cup for a second consecutive season.

Morocco to appeal sanctions over shambolic Africa Cup final against Senegal

RABAT, Morocco (AP) — Morocco has decided to appeal a ruling that resulted in fines of $415,000 and match bans because of a chaotic Africa Cup of Nations final, its soccer federation said Tuesday.

CAF, African soccer's governing body, last month fined the host and Senegal over unrest at last month's final in the Moroccan capital.

Senegal won the game 1-0 after extra-time and decided not to appeal the ruling.

The Moroccan federation and national team player Ismael Saibari were issued fines totalling $415,000. Saibari and a teammate were also banned from games. During the final, ball boys tried to seize a towel belonging to Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, apparently to distract him, an incident that alone led to a $200,000 fine for the host.

Morocco sees CAF’s sanctions as disproportionate to the incidents.

“Given the incompatibility of these sanctions with the scale and severity of the incidents (...), the FRMF has decided to appeal these decisions,” Morocco’s soccer federation said in a statement.

The final was marred by Senegalese players walking off the field in protest at a stoppage-time penalty and fans attempting to storm the pitch. Outraged visiting supporters threw chairs and clashed with stewards. Eighteen are awaiting trial on hooliganism charges.

CAF fined the Senegalese soccer federation and national team coach Pape Thiaw a total of $715,000. It also issued match suspensions to Thiaw and bans to two other players.

The match bans apply only to Africa games, not the World Cup kicking off in June, which Senegal and Morocco have qualified for.

After the tumultuous final, the tension moved from the pitch to social media. In Morocco, human rights groups warned against a surge in what they called “hate speech toward sub-Saharan residents.”

In response, officials from Morocco and Senegal called for calm, and sought to reaffirm their countries’ economic and diplomatic ties.

Australian freestyle skier Laura Peel hurts knee in Winter Olympics training camp

AIROLO, Switzerland (AP) — Australian freestyle skier Laura Peel hurt her knee in a training camp ahead of the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, raising doubts about her participation in a fourth Games.

The 36-year-old Peel is a two-time world champion and one of the favorites to win the women's aerials.

She sustained the injury in Switzerland on Monday, the Australian team said in a statement, and had a scan at a sports specialist clinic.

“She has returned to the training camp in Airolo, Switzerland where she’ll be treated by the team physio to determine next steps,” the team said Tuesday.

The women’s aerials qualification starts on Feb. 17.

Peel has never won an Olympic medal. She was one of the favorites in aerials in Beijing in 2022 but finished in fifth place, and was also at Pyeongchang in 2018 and Sochi in 2014.

Sabalenka stays top-ranked on women's tour despite loss, Djokovic up to third on men's tour

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Carlos Alcaraz completed a career Grand Slam of singles victories with his Australian Open title, but there was some solace for the man he defeated, 24-time Grand Slam singles champion Novak Djokovic.

While Alcaraz maintained his No. 1 ranking on the ATP tour ahead of Jannik Sinner, Djokovic, who beat Sinner in the semifinals at Melbourne Park, moved up one place to No. 3. It is the first time the 38-year-old Djokovic has been inside the top three since August 2024.

On the WTA Tour, Aryna Sabalenka maintained her top ranking despite her loss in the final to Elena Rybakina, Rybakina moved up two places to third in the rankings, with Iga Swiatek in between at No. 2.

Three Americans followed in the WTA rankings — No. 4 Amanda Anisimova, Coco Gauff and Australian Open semifinalist Jessica Pegula. Elina Svitolina moved up two places to No. 10 after her semifinal loss to Sabalenka at Melbourne Park.

American Learner Tien was one of the biggest improvers on either tour by moving up five places on the ATP Tour to No. 24, a career high. The 20-year-old Tien, who lost to now No. 4-ranked Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals, became the youngest American man to reach the final eight of a major since 2002.

Shedeur Sanders likes Todd Monken's 'vibe' and says he has a 'connection' with the Browns' new coach

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Shedeur Sanders is excited to play for new Browns coach Todd Monken.

The rookie quarterback said he felt a “connection” after meeting with Monken at the team facility after the longtime offensive coordinator was hired last week.

“I’m thankful I was able to meet Coach, that he accepted that time that I could meet with him and all I can do is work,” Sanders said Monday before practice for the Pro Bowl Games.

Monken was Baltimore’s offensive coordinator the past three seasons. Lamar Jackson was the AP NFL MVP in 2023 and first-team All-Pro in 2024 under Monken.

“It’s truly great that he was able to coach Lamar and he was able to accomplish everything that he was able to accomplish in his life and his career,” Sanders said. “I feel like we definitely have a connection just in talking to him and seeing kinda like his vibe and he has a great vibe about him.”

Despite starting just seven games for Cleveland, the fifth-round pick was selected as a replacement for the league’s flag football all-star game between the two conferences.

“Yes, I was surprised,” Sanders said. “It wasn’t like I was just sitting there expecting it. ... I’m not going to lie, a lot of the time I’m taking it day by day, having that method. ... If you would tell me that this was going to happen at the beginning of the year, I couldn’t say that that would’ve happened. It’s amazing. I’m truly thankful for it. I get to come here and be around all these great players and coaches. It’s surreal.”

Sanders was expected to be a top-five pick in the draft last year but slipped to 144th. The Browns selected quarterback Dillon Gabriel ahead of him in the third round. Sanders got an opportunity after veteran Joe Flacco was traded and Gabriel got six starts.

Sanders went 3-4, completed 56.6% of his passes for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions with a 68.1 passer rating.

BLACKHAWKS 6, SHARKS 3

CHICAGO (AP) — Ryan Donato had two goals and two assists, and Chicago beat the San Jose.

Ilya Mikheyev added a goal and three assists in Chicago’s final home game before the Olympic break. Connor Bedard, Connor Murphy and Sam Rinzel also scored, and Spencer Knight made 25 saves.

The Blackhawks had lost five in a row. They improved to 3-6-2 in their last 11 games.

Macklin Celebrini had a goal and an assist for San Jose, which dropped to 1-2-1 on a five-game trip. Will Smith and Shakir Mukhamadullin also scored.

STARS 4, JETS 3, OT

DALLAS (AP) — Thomas Harley scored at 2:05 of overtime, and the Dallas Stars matched their longest winning streak of the season at five games with a 4-3 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Monday night.

The goal came moments after Jake Oettinger made a pad save on Mark Schiefele’s breakaway in a matchup of the top two goalies for Team USA in the second-to-last game before the break for the Milan Cortina Olympics. Oettinger and expected U.S. starter Connor Hellbuyck each stopped 24 shots.

Mikko Rantanen put Dallas ahead 3-2 with 7:43 left in regulation on a weaving play through two defenders, but Logan Stanley got the Jets even on a 6-on-5 goal with 1:43 to go.

Jason Robertson had his 199th career goal and team-leading 31st this season and Nils Lundkvist scored as the Stars won their 18th one-goal game, tying the New York Islanders for the NHL lead.

Gabriel Vilardi and Cole Perfetti had a goal and an assist apiece for the Jets, and Scheifele had two assists.

Seahawks' Klint Kubiak focused on Super Bowl, not Raiders job

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak said his entire focus this week is on beating the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl and not on a future that is expected to see him land a job as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders.

Kubiak had his second interview with the Raiders on Saturday and a person with knowledge of the discussions said the two sides are working toward finalizing an agreement. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because no contract was in place and no announcement can be made until after the Super Bowl.

“I’m just focusing on playing this game and coaching this game," Kubiak said Monday night. "Been working my whole life to get to coach in this game, and that’s where our focus is.”

Kubiak declined to answer any questions about the search process, including what it was like to interview with Raiders minority owner Tom Brady.

“That’s another part of another process,” he said. “That is just something I’m not really wanting to talk about tonight. We’re all so focused on this game and our players deserve all of our attention for this game.”

Seattle coach Mike Macdonald seemed resigned to losing Kubiak after the Super Bowl, as well as potentially other assistants who could join him in Las Vegas.

“Our coaches, as they get these opportunities to take it to the next level, you’re happy for them,” Macdonald said.” It’s a little bittersweet because (Kubiak is) such a great person and great coach. ... We have a lot of great coaches and those people are going to have opportunities as well."

Kubiak, 38, would be the third coach in three seasons for the Raiders and fifth full-time leader since they moved to Las Vegas in 2020. He would succeed Pete Carroll, who went 3-14 in one season in Las Vegas after a storied run with Seattle that included two Super Bowl appearances and one championship.

Kubiak likely will be counted on to mold Fernando Mendoza, who led Indiana to the national championship, into the franchise quarterback the organization has long sought. The Raiders own the top pick in this year’s draft, and they are expected to use that selection on the Heisman Trophy winner.

Brady helped run the search with general manager John Spytek. Brady said he was impressed with Kubiak's offense after calling Seattle's last two playoff games in his role as an analyst on Fox.

“They make one thing look like another thing,” Brady said on an episode of “Let's Go” on Sirius XM. "There’s plays off of plays. I think Klint’s done a great job this season developing his own identity as a play-caller. They run the West Coast offense, that’s what Seattle does. They try to make it quarterback-friendly for Sam. Klint has played to the strengths of that team, and I think he’s, you know, last week’s game I thought he did a lot of great things against a very talented Rams defense.”

It was Kubiak’s work with Sam Darnold that got the Raiders’ attention. Darnold, taken third overall by the New York Jets in the 2018 NFL draft, had been considered a bust until leading Minnesota to a 14-win season in 2024. But the Vikings moved on from Darnold, and he proved that season was no fluke, winning 14 games in Seattle en route to making the Super Bowl against New England.

“He’s unbelievable," Darnold said. "He wakes up at insane hours. He gets to the facility at 4–4:30 in the morning, and he’s there later than anyone. He’s a grinder. He loves football. He’s very honest and he’s very forthcoming with his players, which myself and a lot of the guys really appreciate.”

Thomas Harley scores in OT as Stars beat Jets 4-3 for 5th straight win

DALLAS (AP) — Thomas Harley scored at 2:05 of overtime, and the Dallas Stars matched their longest winning streak of the season at five games with a 4-3 victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Monday night.

The goal came moments after Jake Oettinger made a pad save on Mark Schiefele's breakaway in a matchup of the top two goalies for Team USA in the second-to-last game before the break for the Milan Cortina Olympics.

Matt Duchene's four-game goal streak ended, but he had two assists along with Miro Heiskanen. His pass put Harley one-on-one with Hellebuyck, who was beaten by a backhand over his left pad.

The Jets went ahead 2-1 slightly more than three minutes after Robertson scored the game’s first goal early in the second period. Villardi’s 21st of the season came on a rebound, and Perfetti ended Winnipeg’s five-game streak without a power-play goal by scoring at 3:58 of the second.

The Stars pulled even when Nils Lundkvist poked a rebound past Hellebuyck on a shot from Duchene with five minutes left in the second period.

Pressed into service, goalie Clay Stevenson has delivered 2 important wins for Washington

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Capitals were already facing an urgent situation, having fallen below the playoff cut line. Then they lost their top two goalies to injuries at the same time.

Clay Stevenson seized his opportunity.

Stevenson made 29 saves Monday night, helping Washington to a 4-1 victory over the New York Islanders. The 26-year-old goalie, who had only one NHL game on his resume before last weekend, has now won each of his two starts since rejoining the Capitals. He also beat Carolina on Saturday.

“No different than forwards or defensemen, you're going to go through injuries and things are going to happen throughout the season,” coach Spencer Carbery said. “Being able to have someone like Clay be able to come up and play really well like he has over the last couple games is certainly something that the organization thinks is important.”

Stevenson played one game for the Capitals last season. In his return Saturday, Washington fell behind 3-0 before rallying to beat the Hurricanes 4-3 in overtime for his first career victory. With Logan Thompson and Charlie Lindgren still unavailable, Stevenson played again Monday in a huge divisional matchup with the Islanders.

The win pulled the Capitals within two points of the Islanders for the Metropolitan Division's third playoff spot. It could have been a lot worse, but Washington has turned things around following a concerning slump and now has a three-game winning streak. The Capitals have two more games before the Olympic break.

“Guys understand the significance that essentially our season's on the line and our playoff lives are on the line," Carbery said. "Once you get down after the break, you're 10 points back or whatever it might be like that — you got to go on like an 18-2 rip.”

Thanks to Stevenson, Washington has a more manageable hill to climb. Now the Capitals play at Philadelphia on Tuesday night. Carbery wouldn't commit to a starting goalie. The Capitals also recently called up Garin Bjorklund from the minors, but he's never played in the NHL.

Stevenson said he's able if needed for the second half of this back-to-back and he's done it already many times.

"I'm ready always.”

Giroux's goal with just over five minutes remaining lifts Senators past Penguins 3-2

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Claude Giroux scored with just over five minutes remaining in the third period and the Ottawa Senators beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 on Monday night.

Giroux skated in on goal, was tripped by Erik Karlsson and went hard into the post. The net lifted off its moorings, but officials determined the puck crossed the line first at 14:52.

Giroux, a longtime Philadelphia Flyer, tied Alex Ovechkin for the most points against Pittsburgh by an active player. He has 23 goals and 78 points in 72 games against the Penguins.

Ottawa's Tim Stutzle scored in his third straight game and Michael Amadio scored his first goal since Dec. 11 at Columbus. Stutzle has four goals in his last five games.

Linus Ullmark made 14 saves for the Senators, who won their fourth straight game. Ottawa has points in nine of its last 11 games overall. Ullmark joined Tony Esposito and Bob Froese as the only goalies in NHL history to win each of their first eight games against Pittsburgh.

Tommy Novak scored for Pittsburgh, and Egor Chinakhov added a goal and an assist. Chinakhov has seven goals in 16 games with Pittsburgh since he was traded from Columbus. Evgeni Malkin continued a six-game point streak with an assist.

Arturs Silovs stopped 28 shots for the Penguins, who had their six-game win streak halted. The Penguins also had a nine-game point streak snapped. Pittsburgh has points in 16 of its last 20 games overall.

Ottawa outshot Pittsburgh 31-16, including a 9-3 margin in the second period, the second-fewest in a period this season for the Penguins.

Amadio and Stutzle scored Ottawa’s first two goals off Pittsburgh turnovers.

Drake Maye's shoulder injury improves ahead of Super Bowl showdown

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Drake Maye said the shoulder injury that limited him in practice last week has improved enough that he had a normal workout on his first full day in the Bay Area for the Super Bowl.

Maye was unable to practice fully last week for the New England Patriots after injuring his throwing shoulder on a scramble in the AFC championship game win against the Denver Broncos.

But Maye said he had no limitations on Monday as the team prepares to face the Seattle Seahawks.

“I threw a good bit," Maye said. "I threw as much as I would in a practice, and it felt great.”

Maye said he will be fine for the game, which will come as a relief to Patriots fans counting on their second-year quarterback.

Maye had a breakthrough season in 2025, earning second-team All-Pro honors and being named a finalist for both the AP NFL MVP award and the AP NFL Offensive Player of the Year.

Maye led the NFL with a 113.5 passer rating, a 72% completion rate and an average of 8.9 yards per attempt. Maye threw for 4,394 yards with 31 TD passes in the regular season.

But he hasn't been nearly as productive in the postseason, throwing for just 533 yards and turning the ball over five times in three playoff wins for the Patriots to reach the Super Bowl.

Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has no concerns about how his quarterback will perform on Sunday when he will try to become the youngest starting quarterback ever to win a Super Bowl. Maye will be 23 years, 162 days old on game day — 178 days younger than Ben Roethlisberger when he won it all 20 years ago.

“He'll be fine,” McDaniels said. “He's good.”

Caleb Wilson scores 22 points to lead No. 14 North Carolina past Syracuse, 87-77

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — Caleb Wilson had 22 points and nine rebounds as No. 14 North Carolina held off Syracuse 87-77 on Monday night after building a 32-point lead midway through the second half.

Syracuse shaved the deficit to six with 42 seconds remaining before the Tar Heels finally closed it out from the free-throw line.

Henri Veesaar added 17 points and 11 boards for his Atlantic Coast Conference-leading 12th double-double. Jonathan Powell scored 12 points and Luka Bogavac had 10 for the Tar Heels (18-4, 6-3), who will carry a four-game winning streak into Saturday’s showdown with No. 4 Duke in Chapel Hill.

Wilson went 6 of 14 from the field and reached 20 points for the 16th time, most by a UNC freshman.

Donnie Freeman finished with 23 points and eight rebounds to lead Syracuse (13-10, 4-6), which lost for the fifth time in six games. Naithan George added 15 points.

The Tar Heels led 72-40 with 9:40 left before Syracuse made it respectable late with an 11-1 run.

Back-to-back 3s by Veesaar and Powell gave UNC its first-double digit lead at 23-12. Syracuse hit seven straight shots to get back within five, but the Tar Heels answered with a 12-0 spurt to open a 46-32 advantage at halftime.

Eighteen of Freeman’s points came in that first half, when the Orange shot 44% but committed nine turnovers.

Capitals top Islanders 4-1 to pull within 2 points of 3rd place in the Metropolitan Division

WASHINGTON (AP) — Martin Fehervary and Anthony Beauvillier scored 31 seconds apart in the second period, and the Washington Capitals beat the New York Islanders 4-1 on Monday night.

Clay Stevenson won his second straight game in goal for the Capitals, who pulled within two points of the Islanders for third place in the Metropolitan Division. Stevenson has been forced into action with Washington's top two goalies — Logan Thompson and Charlie Lindgren — both injured.

This was Stevenson's third NHL game.

Nic Dowd also scored for the Capitals in his 500th game with the franchise. John Carlson scored into an empty net with 2:25 to play on a shot that traveled almost the entire length of the ice.

New York led 1-0 after one period on a goal by Mathew Barzal. Tom Wilson's errant pass from the corner in his own zone ended up on Barzal's stick right in front of the net.

Wilson made up for that in the second, feeding Fehervary on a give-and-go, and the Washington defenseman tied the game. It was the fourth goal of the season for Fehervary, who is on Slovakia's roster for this month's Olympics.

Less than a minute later, Beauvillier jammed the puck past Islanders goalie David Rittich to the short side.

Dowd scored in the third when he sent the puck across the goal mouth toward Alex Ovechkin and it bounced in off Islanders defenseman Tony DeAngelo.

The Capitals have won three straight after going nearly two months without consecutive victories. Washington has points in five of its last six.

Tennessee QB Joey Aguilar files lawsuit in Knoxville seeking additional year of eligibility

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee quarterback Joey Aguilar has filed a lawsuit as he bids for an extra year of eligibility that would allow him to play this fall.

The complaint filed Friday in Knox County Chancery Court in Tennessee argues that Aguilar should be allowed a fourth year of playing Division I football rather than having the years he spent in junior college count against his eligibility. The Knoxville (Tennessee) News Sentinel first reported on the lawsuit.

Aguilar played at Diablo Valley (California) Community College from 2021-22 before transferring to Appalachian State, where he spent the 2023 and 2024 seasons. Aguilar then transferred to Tennessee and completed 67.3% of his passes for 3,565 yards with 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions this past season.

He also redshirted at City College of San Francisco in 2019 before his 2020 season was canceled due to the pandemic.

“Aguilar needs relief now, to know whether he should report to spring practice or prepare for the NFL draft,” Cameron Norris, the lawyer representing Aguilar, says in his complaint.

Aguilar is seeking an emergency temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction requiring the NCAA to permit him to play one more season for Tennessee in 2026.

Aguilar had recently removed himself from the list of plaintiffs in a federal lawsuit that Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia had filed in federal court. Pavia’s lawsuit had challenged an NCAA rule that counts seasons spent at junior colleges against players’ eligibility for Division I football.

Pavia initially sued the NCAA in November 2024 and won a preliminary injunction that allowed him to play for Vanderbilt in 2025. He finished second in the Heisman Trophy balloting and helped Vanderbilt go 10-3.

The NCAA appealed the Pavia ruling but issued a blanket waiver that granted an extra year of eligibility to former junior college players whose situations were similar to the Vanderbilt quarterback.

“Despite Pavia’s injunction, the NCAA’s blanket waiver for JUCO players and the record-breaking successes of the 2025 season, the NCAA decided to enforce the JUCO rule again in 2026,” Norris said in his complaint. “It refuses to grant waivers, even on an individual basis, to any athletes who ask that their junior-college years not be counted against them. The NCAA has given no rational explanation for that disparate treatment.”

Although Pavia now plans to enter the NFL draft, he continued his lawsuit to assist other former junior college players. Norris’ complaint notes that a ruling on the Pavia case won’t come until at least Feb. 10.

“This sequence of events put Aguilar in an untenable position,” Norris wrote. “He cannot wait much longer to know whether he is eligible to play college football in 2026.”

According to the complaint, Aguilar removed himself from the Pavia case and filed his own lawsuit in hopes of a quick ruling. Norris wrote that Aguilar has a spot on Tennessee’s roster waiting for him and that he could make about $2 million playing college football this year.

The Latest: Super Bowl week begins with Opening Night festivities

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Super Bowl Opening Night is set to begin, with Drake Maye, Sam Darnold and other Super Bowl participants meeting with thousands of reporters from across the globe in a zany spectacle that kicks off the week’s festivities on Monday night.

Maye and the New England Patriots will take on Darnold and the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers.

First, the athletes will meet more than 6,000 credentialed reporters who will pepper them with questions ranging from the standard football topics to the silly and offbeat stuff.

The event began as a daytime introduction of the teams and evolved into a live, ticketed, prime-time showcase on national television.

The Latest:

Saints will play in the first NFL game in France

The NFL will play its first regular-season game in France next season, with the New Orleans Saints set to travel to Paris.

The league announced Monday that the game will be played at the Stade de France. The NFL also has a multiyear deal to keep playing regular-season games at Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

The NFL already had its first game in Australia scheduled for next season, with the Los Angeles Rams set to host that one. It also will play in Rio de Janeiro, Munich and three games in London. The league also could return to Mexico City this fall.

The NFL has played 62 regular-season games outside the U.S. so far, with London, Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Madrid, Dublin, Sao Paulo, Mexico City and Toronto serving as hosts.

The Saints’ opponent will be determined once the schedule is finalized in a few months.

NFL releases statement on Giants co-owner appearing in Epstein files

The NFL released a statement on New York Giants co-owner Steve Tisch, whose name showed up more than 400 times in files released by the Justice Department regarding Jeffrey Epstein.

“The league is aware of the reports and Steve’s response,” the statement read. “Our office will look into the matter to understand the facts.”

Tisch said last week he knew Epstein and they “exchanged emails about adult women” and “discussed movies, philanthropy and investments.” But the 76-year-old Tisch denied going to Epstein’s island and was never charged in the investigation.

Epstein killed himself in a New York jail cell in August 2019, a month after being indicted on federal sex trafficking charges.

Patriots QB Drake Maye deals with illness on top of Super Bowl pressure

New England quarterback Drake Maye didn’t practice on Friday because he was dealing with an illness, the latest wrinkle in the quarterback’s preparation for his first Super Bowl.

Maye also has a shoulder injury, though he was at the team’s facility and able to participate in team meetings. The 23-year-old is in his second season with the Patriots. He’s an MVP candidate after a stellar year that included 4,394 yards passing and 31 touchdowns in the regular season.

Coach Mike Vrabel has said he doesn’t expect the illness or the shoulder injury to affect Maye’s performance on Sunday.

Sam Darnold is the first class of ’18 QB in the Super Bowl

Sam Darnold will be starting in the Super Bowl before Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen and the rest of the NFL’s Class of 2018 quarterbacks. It took Darnold five teams and eight seasons to get there.

Darnold led the Seattle Seahawks to a 14-3 record, a division title, the No. 1 seed and was at his best in the NFC championship game.

Despite an oblique injury, Darnold threw for 346 yards and three touchdowns in Seattle’s 31-27 victory over the Los Angeles Rams. He completed 25 of 36 passes and had no turnovers.

NFL turf guru has spent a year and a half preparing the Super Bowl field

The process of preparing the Super Bowl field got underway long before the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots started getting ready for the 2025 season.

Nick Pappas — the NFL’s turf guru — chose the sod farm that began growing the grass for the game about 16 months ago. He has spent time since then monitoring the progress.

The job went into overdrive in January, when Pappas and his crew started a monthlong installation and preparation process to make sure that the story of the game is about the teams and not the grass.

The field at Levi’s Stadium will be the stage for the country’s most-watched sporting event on Feb. 8, along with the pregame and halftime festivities and concerts that make Super Bowl Sunday a cultural capstone.

WNBA and players' union meet for 3 hours to try to push forward stalled CBA negotiations

NEW YORK (AP) — The WNBA and the players’ union met for a few hours Monday for the first time in several weeks to try to move the stalled collective bargaining negotiations forward.

Union president Nneka Ogwumike walked out of the NBA offices around 1:30 p.m. — three hours after she got there — and said “no we can't (talk)” when asked for comment. She was joined by executive committee members Brianna Turner and Alysha Clark. Kelsey Plum and Napheesa Collier planned on being at the meeting, but had flight issues so Zoomed in along with Breanna Stewart.

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert and members of the labor relations committee were in attendance as well as New York Liberty owners Clara Wu and Joe Tsai.

Talks to reach a new CBA haven’t had much traction over the last few weeks as the union says it is waiting for a response to a proposal it sent around Christmas that included a 30% gross revenue share for the players. According to a person familiar with the negotiations, the league didn’t feel that proposal was much different then the previous one that the union had sent.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the negotiations.

The league’s most recent offer last month would guarantee a maximum base salary of $1 million in 2026 that could reach $1.3 million through revenue sharing.

That’s up from the current $249,000 and could grow to nearly $2 million over the life of the agreement, the person told the AP.

The two sides have been in a “status quo” period after the latest extension of the current CBA ran out on Jan. 9. They agreed to a moratorium a few days later that halted the initial stages of free agency in which teams would seek to deliver qualifying offers and franchise tag designations to players.

If a new CBA isn’t agreed upon soon, it could delay the start of the 2026 season. It’s already delayed the expansion draft for Toronto and Portland. The league did release its schedule last month with the regular season set to begin May 8.

The last CBA was announced in the middle of January 2020, a month after it had been agreed to. It could easily take two months from when a new CBA is reached to get to the start of free agency, which was supposed to begin last month.

NFL to play first regular-season game in France with Saints in 2026

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The NFL will play its first regular-season game ever in France next season with the New Orleans Saints set to travel to Paris later this year.

The league on Monday announced the plans to play a game at the Stade de France next season in addition to a multiyear deal to keep playing regular-season games at Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

The NFL has already announced its first game in Australia next season with the Los Angeles Rams set to host that game, as well as games in Rio de Janeiro, Munich, and three in London. The league also could return to Mexico City next season.

The additions of Australia and France will mean NFL games will have been played in nine countries outside of the United States after next season.

The NFL says it has played 62 regular-season games outside the U.S. so far, with London, Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Madrid, Dublin, Sao Paulo, Mexico City and Toronto as hosts.

The Saints will play an opponent to be determined after the schedule is finalized later this year. The Saints have international marketing rights in France as part of the NFL’s Global Markets Program.

“Bringing a regular season game to Paris in 2026 marks an exciting next step in the continued expansion of the league’s global footprint,” Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. “Paris is one of the world’s greatest sporting and cultural cities with tremendous success in hosting global events that unite fans on the biggest stages. Playing our first‑ever regular season game at the impressive Stade de France, together with the New Orleans Saints, underlines our continued global growth ambitions and we look forward to bringing the NFL to our passionate fans in France.”

Saints owner Gayle Benson said she is excited to play in France, citing the “strong cultural connection between Louisiana and France.”

The Stade de France was built in 1998 when the country hosted the World Cup. It was also used for the 2024 Olympics and has hosted several major international sporting events.

The NFL says it has more than 14 million fans in France and launched a flag football program there in 2023 that already reaches more than 8,000 boys and girls.

The NFL did not announce any of the teams for the game in Spain. The Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs and Chicago Bears currently have marketing rights in Spain as part of the league’s Global Markets Program.

The first NFL regular-season game in Spain was played at the Bernabeu last November as the Dolphins defeated the Washington Commanders 16-13 in overtime before a crowd of 78,610 fans.

NFL Spain country manager Rafa De Los Santos said the multiyear agreement to playing games in Madrid “underlines our commitment to the market and enables us to continue to engage fans year-round and invest long-term in initiatives like NFL Flag and youth participation.”

The NFL said Spain is “an important market globally,” with 11 million fans. It said it will also focus on developing the league’s flag football initiatives across the country.

After the first game in Madrid last year, there had also been talks of the league also trying to organize a game in Barcelona at some point.

NFL inks new multiyear deal to play regular-season games at Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu Stadium

MADRID (AP) — The NFL said Monday it will play more regular-season games in Madrid.

The league announced it has reached a multiyear deal to keep playing at Real Madrid's Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

It did not immediately say the length of the new agreement or which teams will play in 2026.

The first NFL regular-season game in Spain was played at the Bernabeu last November as the Miami Dolphins defeated the Washington Commanders 16-13 in overtime before a crowd of 78,610 fans.

It was the seventh — and final — international game of the season, the most ever in one year for the league as it continues to expand globally.

The NFL played for the first time in Dublin and Berlin in 2025. It also returned for a second straight year to Sao Paulo and played three more games in London.

There had been talks of the league also trying to organize a game in Barcelona at some point.

The NFL said it planned to increase the number of international games to a point where each team will get to play a game abroad every year. Goodell said last year the NFL also wants to play in Asia.

This year, it will go to Australia and add a game in Rio de Janeiro. It will also play a game in Munich, Germany, and three in London.

The Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs and Chicago Bears currently have marketing rights in Spain.

Val d’Isère takes big step toward hosting 2030 Winter Olympics skiing events

VAL D'ISERE, France (AP) — The skiing resort of Val d’Isère in the French Alps took a big step Monday toward hosting skiing events at the 2030 Winter Olympics which France will organize.

Through a vote of its municipal council, Val d’Isère expressed its desire to be included in the preferred framework outlining the map of venues for the French Alps Games.

The resort, which is a traditional stop on the World Cup circuit, is seeking to host the women’s and men’s technical alpine skiing events on the Face de Bellevarde slope.

“Val d’Isère is a land of Olympic history, performance and innovation," Mayor Patrick Martin said. “By voting this principle-based support, elected officials clearly affirm our determination to be part of the 2030 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.”

The 2030 French Alps Olympics must tie together snow and sliding venues in the mountains with skating and curling arenas among the palm trees on the Riviera coastal city Nice. A definitive map of the sites is expected to be decided by the end of June.

The project is led by Edgar Grospiron, a freestyle skiing gold medalist in 1992 when France last hosted the Winter Games.

Grospiron welcomed the vote as “excellent news."

“Val d’Isère — a legendary stop on the Alpine Ski World Cup circuit with the Critérium de la Première Neige, and host of the Olympic Games in 1992 and the World Championships in 2009 — is part of the international history of skiing," he said. “And this great story will continue.”

Lightning rally from 4-goal deficit to beat Bruins 6-5 in Stadium Series thriller

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Nikita Kucherov scored the tying goal in the third period, Jake Guentzel scored the only goal in the shootout, and the Tampa Bay Lightning rallied from a four-goal deficit to beat the Boston Bruins 6-5 in front of 64,617 fans at an NHL Stadium Series game at Raymond James Stadium.

Kucherov finished with a goal and three assists, Brandon Hagel had a goal and two assists, while Oliver Bjorkstrand, Darren Raddysh and Nick Paul all scored power-play goals after Tampa Bay fell behind 5-1 in the second period.

Andrei Vasilevskiy finished with 29 saves.

Tampa Bay’s four-goal comeback is the largest in NHL outdoor game history and the largest comeback victory in franchise history.

Morgan Geekie had a pair of goals and three points for the Bruins. Viktor Arvidsson, Alex Steeves and Matthew Poitras also scored for Boston, which improved to 11-1-1 in the past 13 games. Charlie McAvoy had a pair of assists while Jeremy Swayman finished with 41 saves.

The game featured the first goalie fight in outdoor game history when Vasilevskiy and Swayman exchanged blows at center ice in the second period.

HURRICANES 3, KINGS 2, OT

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Sebastian Aho scored early in overtime to lead Carolina to a win over Los Angeles.

Brandon Bussi made 11 saves to continue his dominant rookie season, while Jordan Staal and Alexander Nikishin also scored for the Hurricanes, who have earned at least a point in eight straight games (6-0-2).

Samuel Helenius and Quinton Byfield scored for the Kings and Anton Forsberg made 31 saves. The Kings wrapped up their road trip with a 3-1-1 record with one game (last Monday at Columbus) postponed due to severe winter weather.

A winter storm dumped snow all around North Carolina but Raleigh was mostly spared, which made it easier for about 14,000 fans to make it to the arena for the afternoon start.

A day after squandering a three-goal lead in a 4-3 overtime loss at Washington, Aho made sure the Hurricanes didn’t blow a 2-0 lead against the Kings. He beat Forsberg 1:25 into the overtime period after the Kings’ goalie had made two tough saves on Seth Jarvis.

Tomas Hertl scored with 6 seconds to play and Adin Hill stopped 19 shots for Vegas.

Jarrett Allen scores career-high 40 points as the Cavaliers beat the Trail Blazers 130-111

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Jarrett Allen scored a career-high 40 points and grabbed 17 rebounds as the Cleveland Cavaliers handed the Portland Trail Blazers their fifth straight loss with a 130-111 victory Sunday night.

Sam Merrill added 22 points, including six 3-pointers, and the Cavs rebounded from a loss to the Phoenix Suns on Friday night that snapped a five-game winning streak. Allen also contributed five assists and four blocks.

Before the game, Avdija earned his first All-Star nod when he was selected as a Western Conference reserve. Cleveland star Donovan Mitchell was chosen as a reserve in the Eastern Conference.

With the trade deadline approaching, both teams made deals ahead of the game. The Cavs acquired guards Keon Ellis and Dennis Schroder from Sacramento in a three-team swap that sent forward De’Andre Hunter to the Kings. The Chicago Bulls received Dario Saric from Sacramento along with draft picks as part of the deal.

Portland acquired forward Vit Krejci from the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for injured center Duop Reath and a pair of draft picks.

The Cavaliers jumped out to an early 11-point lead, but Love's 3-pointer pulled Portland to 43-41 with just more than five minutes left in the first half. The Cavs led 57-48 at the break.

Dean Wade hit back-to-back 3s to stretch Cleveland's lead to 66-52 in the third quarter.

Blazers guard Blake Wesley played for first time since October after recovering from foot surgery, entering the game in the opening quarter.

Pistons hand Nets 130-77 loss in most lopsided win in team history

DETROIT (AP) — Jalen Duren had 21 points and 10 rebounds after being added to the All-Star Game on Sunday night as an Eastern Conference reserve, and the Detroit Pistons routed the Brooklyn Nets 130-77 in the most-lopsided victory in franchise history.

The 53-point margin topped the mark of 52 set in a 118-66 victory at Boston on Jan 31, 2003. The Nets had a 54-point loss — 120-66 — on Jan. 21 against New York.

Cade Cunningham, the Detroit star who was earlier selected an East All-Star starter, added 18 points, 12 assists and four steals. The Eastern Conference-leading Pistons improved to 36-12 with their second straight victory. They beat Golden State on Friday night to finish 2-1 on a three-game trip.

Cunningham had 13 points, 10 assists and four steals in the first half as the Pistons raced to a 67-44 lead. Ausar Thompson hit a half-court shot at the halftime buzzer.

Detroit outscored Brooklyn 33-18 in the third quarter to push it to 100-62. The Pistons’ largest lead was 55 points.

CELTICS 107, BUCKS 79

BOSTON (AP) — Jaylen Brown had 30 points and 13 rebounds, Anfernee Simons scored 27 points off the bench and Boston coasted to a victory over Milwaukee.

Derrick White added 17 points, eight assists and seven rebounds, and Neemias Queta had 14 points and eight boards as the Celtics won their second straight game after alternating wins and losses in their previous four. It was Brown’s third double-double this season.

Ryan Rollins led Milwaukee with 25 points and Kyle Kuzma scored 16.

With trade rumors swirling around their sidelined star Giannis Antetokoumpo, the Bucks didn’t miss a shot in the opening 2½ minutes (5 for 5) and pulled ahead 12-0 before Boston sent them to their fifth straight loss.

The Celtics led 56-42 at halftime and Brown, who missed their easy win over Sacramento Friday with left hamstring tightness and a bruised right knee, scored 10 of their initial 12 points to start the second half, pushing them ahead 68-47.

Boston’s lead ballooned to 27 points on Brown’s 3-pointer midway into the final quarter before coach Joe Mazzulla pulled his starters.

HEAT 134, BULLS 91

MIAMI (AP) — Bam Adebayo and Pelle Larsson each had 20 points, and Miami tied their third-biggest victory margin ever in a rout of Chicago.

The Heat led by as many as 54; before Sunday, their biggest lead this season was 45 at Memphis on Oct. 24. It was Miami’s second-largest lead of the play-by-play era that dates to 1996; the Heat beat Memphis by 60 on March 29, 2024.

The 54-point hole was Chicago’s biggest since a 58-point deficit against Boston on Dec. 8, 2018. The Bulls’ biggest deficits this season were a pair of 41-point games — one against Minnesota on Dec. 29, the other also against Miami on Nov. 21.

WIZARDS 116, KINGS 112

WASHINGTON (AP) — Rookie Will Riley scored a season-high 18 points, including a go-ahead 3-pointer with 2:07 left, and the Washington Wizards beat the Sacramento Kings 116-112 on Sunday night in a matchup of last-place teams.

AJ Johnson added 17 points and Bilal Coulibaly and Marvin Bagley III each scored 15 for the Wizards, who relied heavily on their reserves as they handed the Kings their ninth straight loss.

Washington has won three of four since a nine-game skid of its own. The Wizards began the night last in the Eastern Conference but moved one-half game ahead of Indiana.

Zach LaVine scored 35 points and DeMar DeRozan had 32 for the Kings, who are last in the West and concluded their season-long East Coast trip at 0-6.

Maxime Raynaud added 14 points for Sacramento, but no other Kings player had more than six. Washington led 61-20 in bench points, and the Wizards’ reserves also outscored their starters.

RAPTORS 107, JAZZ 100

TORONTO (AP) — RJ Barrett scored 21 points, Sandro Mamukelashvili added 20 and the Toronto Raptors beat the Utah Jazz 107-100 on Sunday night to open a five-game homestand.

Brandon Ingram added 19 points to help Toronto end a two-game losing streak. Immanuel Quickley had 17 points.

Lauri Markkanen had 27 points and 11 rebounds for Utah. Isaiah Collier added 19 points, and Jusuf Nurkic had 11 points and 13 rebounds.

KNICKS 112, LAKERS 100

NEW YORK (AP) — OG Anunoby scored 25 points, Landry Shamet added 23 and New York beat Los Angeles to spoil LeBron James’ 32nd game at Madison Square Garden.

Josh Hart finished with 20 points and Jalen Brunson had 12 points and a season-high 13 assists for the Knicks, who matched a season high with their sixth straight win, most of them coming easily.

James finished with 22 points, six assists and five rebounds after being chosen as a reserve earlier Sunday for his NBA-record 22nd consecutive All-Star selection. He fell to 23-9 in the regular season at MSG, where he came into the game having averaged 28.2 points, 7.6 assists and 7.0 rebounds.

Luka Doncic had 30 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists. The game was exactly a year to the day of the Lakers’ last trip to New York, when shortly after their victory came word that they agreed to the blockbuster trade with Dallas that brought Doncic to Los Angeles.

Trail Blazers' Deni Avdija becomes the first Israeli to be named an NBA All-Star

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Deni Avdija's breakout season earned him an All-Star nod.

The Portland Trail Blazers forward was named as a Western Conference reserve on Sunday night. He was among 14 reserves announced for the All-Star showcase on Feb. 15 in Inglewood, California.

Avdija is the first Israeli to be named an NBA All-Star. The 25-year-old was born in Beit Zera, a kibbutz on the southern shore of the Sea of Galilee.

Nicknamed “Turbo,” Avdija is averaging career bests of 25.5 points and 6.7 assists along with 7.2 rebounds in 44 games. He's one of three players averaging at least 25 points, seven rebounds and six assists, joining Nikola Jokic and Luka Doncic.

“Proud of him. I know he cares about this team,” Blazers coach Tiago Splitter said. “When you see a person like that succeeding, it’s truly special.”

The 6-foot-8 Avdija has three triple-doubles this season. He has reached double figures in assists nine times and scored 20 or more points 35 times.

Shooting 46.7% from the field, Avdija has helped steady the rebuilding Blazers through a series of injures. Portland was 23-26 and in ninth in the Western Conference heading into Sunday's game against Cleveland.

Avdija was sidelined by a sore back against the Cavaliers, the sixth game he's missed in the past 10.

He’s the 17th player in Blazers history to be named an All-Star and the first since Damian Lillard in 2023.

Avdija is in his second season with the Blazers after spending his first four years with the Washington Wizards, who drafted him in the first round in 2020.

This season’s All-Star showcase has a tournament format — U.S. vs. the World, with three teams of at least eight players playing 12-minute games in a round-robin format. The top two teams will meet for the championship.

Avdija is set to join Doncic, Jokic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Victor Wembanyama, among others, on the World team.

Cambridge scores 30, Gray adds 21; No. 11 Ohio State women beat Nebraska 90-71

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Jaloni Cambridge had 30 points and six assists, Chance Gray made 5 of 10 from 3-point range and finished with 21 points, and No. 11 Ohio State beat Nebraska 90-71 on Sunday night.

Cambridge and her older sister Kennedy Cambridge made back-to-back 3-pointers early in the second quarter that made it 25-20 and Ohio State (20-3, 9-2 Big Ten) led the rest of the way.

Nebraska (16-6, 5-6 Big Ten), which opened the season with a 12-game win streak, has lost four in a row and six of its last eight. The Cornhuskers are 0-5 against Top-25 opponents this season.

Gray, a 5-foot-9 senior guard who scored 791 points in two seasons at Oregon before she transferred to Ohio State prior to last season, has 1,509 career points.

Kennedy Cambridge had 12 points, eight rebounds and seven steals. The redshirt junior has 94 steals this season, the most by an Ohio State player since Averrill Roberts had 98 and Audrey Burcey had 95 in the 1992-93 season. Yvette Angel had a program-record 115 steals in '84-85.

Amiah Hargrove led the Cornhuskers with 24 points, Britt Prince added 12 on 4-of-13 shooting and Logan Nissley scored 11.

Prince made 2 of 2 from the free-throw line and has made 47 straight from the foul line, where she is perfect in 45 attempts in conference play this season.

Kylee Kitts missed her fourth game in a row for Ohio State. The 6-foot-3 freshman, who redshirted at Florida last season, is averaging 9.3 points and a team-leading 7.1 rebounds.

Nebraska's Jessica Petrie (illness), a 6-foot-2 junior who averages 11.9 points and a team-high 1.1 blocks this season, missed her second consecutive game.

Eugenio Suárez and the Reds agree to a $15 million, 1-year contract, AP sources say

Eugenio Suárez and the Cincinnati Reds have agreed on a $15 million, one-year contract, two people familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press on Sunday night.

The people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the deal was pending a physical and had not been announced.

Suárez was the top slugger left on the free agent market and the two-time All-Star returns to Cincinnati, where he played seven seasons. He hit 189 home runs for the Reds from 2015 through 2021, including 49 in 2019.

The move gives the Reds the proven power hitter they had been seeking throughout the offseason. A third baseman for most of his 12-year major league career, the 34-year-old Suárez is expected to be Cincinnati's primary designated hitter and perhaps play some games at third base or first.

The team has Gold Glove winner Ke’Bryan Hayes at third, and touted prospect Sal Stewart is likely to play first.

The Reds were one of many teams interested in Suárez at the trade deadline last year, but they didn’t want to part with key prospects. He was traded from Arizona to Seattle on July 31 and finished fifth in the majors with 49 home runs and fourth with 118 RBIs. He batted .228 overall with an .824 OPS.

The Mariners fell one win shy of reaching their first World Series, losing to Toronto in the American League Championship Series. Suárez had two home runs in Game 5, including a grand slam in the eighth inning.

Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati has averaged 2.67 home runs per game since it opened in 2003. That is the second-highest homer rate in the majors among ballparks to host at least 1,200 games.

Suárez was traded by the Reds to Seattle during spring training in 2022. He spent two seasons with the Mariners before getting traded to the Diamondbacks.

Suárez broke into the majors with Detroit in 2014. He is a .246 career hitter with 325 homers, 949 RBIs and a .792 OPS.

Aho's overtime goal lifts Hurricanes to 3-2 win over Kings

Sebastian Aho scored early in overtime to lead the Carolina Hurricanes to a 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Sunday.

A day after squandering a three-goal lead in a 4-3 overtime loss at Washington, Aho made sure the Hurricanes didn't blow a 2-0 lead against the Kings. He beat Forsberg 1:25 into the overtime period after the Kings' goalie had made two tough saves on Seth Jarvis.

Bussi, a 27-year-old rookie claimed off waivers four days before the season started, continues to be a revelation. He has won 21 of his 25 starts (21-3-1) to help the Hurricanes to first place in the Metropolitan Division.

Nikishin put the Hurricanes up 2-0 with 7:03 to play in the third period. Helenius responded 24 seconds later to cut the lead to 2-1. Byfield finished a beautiful pass from Adrian Kempe with 3:11 left in regulation to tie the game at 2-2.

Staal tipped in Andrei Svechnikov's pass for his third power-play goal of the season at 6:25 of the first period. Staal has matched last year’s scoring output with 13 goals but in 23 fewer games.

49ers hire Raheem Morris as defensive coordinator, AP source says

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — The San Francisco 49ers are hiring former Atlanta Falcons head coach Raheem Morris as their new defensive coordinator in hopes of finding a long-term solution to a revolving door at the spot.

A person familiar with the decision said Sunday that Morris will join the Niners to replace Robert Saleh, who left San Francisco to take over as head coach for the Tennessee Titans. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team hadn't announced the hiring.

ESPN first reported the decision.

Morris had long been viewed as a strong potential candidate because of his success as a coordinator and his ties to San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan. Morris and Shanahan were on staffs together as assistants in Tampa in 2004-05, Washington in 2012-13 and Atlanta in 2015-16.

Shanahan had initially tried to get Morris on his original staff in San Francisco in 2017 only to be blocked by Atlanta head coach Dan Quinn and has long praised Morris' ability as a defensive coach.

Morris was fired by Atlanta last month after back-to-back 8-9 seasons as head coach for the Falcons. He previously served three years as head coach in Tampa Bay from 2009-11 with a 17-31 record and was interim coach in Atlanta in 2020.

While he has never made the playoffs as a head coach, he had a successful three-year run as a defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams from 2021-23, helping the team win the Super Bowl in his first season. Morris has extensive experience as a secondary coach and even spent a few years coaching wide receivers in Atlanta.

Morris will be San Francisco's fifth defensive coordinator in as many seasons. DeMeco Ryans left following the 2022 season to become head coach for Houston before Shanahan cycled through Steve Wilks and Nick Sorensen the next two seasons before firing both.

Saleh, who was Shanahan's defensive coordinator in his first four seasons in San Francisco, returned in 2025 after a failed stint as head coach of the New York Jets and did a good job piecing together a capable defense despite having a unit hampered by injuries to players such as Nick Bosa, Fred Warner and Mykel Williams.

Napoli's Di Lorenzo avoids serious injury and could return in a month

NAPLES, Italy (AP) — Amid an increasing injury crisis, Napoli coach Antonio Conte will be relieved to hear Giovanni Di Lorenzo has avoided serious knee ligament damage and the team captain might only be out for a month.

Di Lorenzo was stretchered off the field in tears during the first half of Saturday’s 2-1 victory over Fiorentina in Serie A and was seen leaving the stadium on crutches.

Conte said afterward that medical staff feared Di Lorenzo had torn his anterior cruciate ligament, which would have meant the end of the season for the Napoli and Italy defender.

However, Napoli said that tests on Sunday had “revealed a second-degree sprain to his left knee.”

Italian media reports said Di Lorenzo could return in four to five weeks, which is also good news for Italy ahead of next month’s World Cup playoffs.

Napoli has struggled with injuries — some long term — all season and the players sidelined include Kevin De Bruyne, Frank Anguissa, David Neres, Billy Gilmour, Matteo Politano and Amir Rrahmani.

Another key player, Romelu Lukaku, only just returned last weekend from a thigh injury sustained during a preseason friendly.

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Snudda Collins scored 28 points off the bench, including the go-ahead 3-pointer in the final minute, and No. 21 Texas Tech knocked off No. 12 TCU 62-60 on Sunday.

Collins matched her career high by scoring 28 points for the second time in three games. Her 3-pointer with 32 seconds remaining gave the Lady Raiders a 58-55 lead and she made one of two free throws for a four-point lead with four seconds left. The free throw proved important when Olivia Miles nailed a 3 to get TCU within a point with less than two seconds remaining. Collins again made one of two from the line for the final margin.

Miles and Marta Suarez scored 15 points each and Donovyn Hunter, whose 3-pointer had tied it at 55 in the final minute, added 11 points for TCU (20-3, 8-2). Suarez had 12 rebounds.

The Horned Frogs had the opportunity to take sole possession of first place after Baylor lost to West Virginia but Baylor and TCU remain tied. Texas Tech (21-3, 8-3) and West Virginia are tied for third place.

Reserve Sidney Love scored 10 points for Texas Tech. The starters scored only 22 points.

Texas Tech led only briefly a few times in the first three quarters and TCU led 40-36 heading to the fourth. Collins scored 15 points in the fourth, and it was her three-point play that gave the Lady Raiders a 54-52 lead at the three-minute mark.

A three-point play by Clara Silva gave TCU an 11-5 lead midway through the first quarter but the Horned Frogs managed only 13 points the remainder of the half, Still, TCU led 24-22 at halftime.

Sebastian Rancik, Isaiah Johnson help Colorado beat TCU 87-61 to end 6-game losing streak

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Sebastian Rancik had 17 points, Isaiah Johnson scored 16 and Colorado cruised to an 87-61 victory over TCU on Sunday, snapping a six-game losing streak.

Rancik came off the bench to sink 6 of 8 shots — 3 of 4 from 3-point range — for the Buffaloes (13-9, 3-6 Big 12 Conference). He added six rebounds and three assists. Johnson made 5 of 11 shots with three 3-pointers, adding five assists.

Reserve Bangot Dak scored 14 on 7-for-8 shooting for Colorado. Josiah Sanders totaled 12 points and six assists, while Barrington Hargress scored 10.

Xavier Edmonds had 13 points and 12 rebounds to pace the Horned Frogs (13-9, 3-6). All four of his double-doubles this season have come in the past four games.

Colorado made 8 of its first 11 shots and got baskets from seven different players in the first eight minutes but managed only a 20-17 lead because TCU came out shooting at a 50% clip — 6 for 12.

Colorado had the lead over the final 12:15 of the half but didn't push its advantage past two possessions until Sanders' three-point play made it 30-21 with 4:27 remaining. Sanders and Rancik both had eight points by halftime as the Buffaloes extended their lead to 38-25. TCU got no closer than 10 after the break.

Colorado made 35 of 63 shots (56%) to TCU's 33% effort (21 for 63). The Buffs hit 48% from beyond the arc — 11 for 23. The Frogs made 5 of 23 from distance (21.7%).

Inter Milan match briefly halted after flare hits Cremonese goalkeeper

CREMONA, Italy (AP) — Inter Milan’s match at Cremonese had to be halted Sunday for a few minutes after home goalkeeper Emil Audero was struck by a flare.

The incident happened at the start of the second half. Play was in the middle of the field when a flare was thrown from the away fans sector into the penalty area, striking Audero.

The game was immediately stopped and Audero rolled away in apparent pain and shock as the medical staff raced onto the field and his teammates ran to Cremonese's stricken goalkeeper.

Audero was able to get up and continue but had a cut on his right leg and appeared to be telling the medical staff that he couldn’t hear from his right ear.

Inter players and coach Cristian Chivu pleaded with the fans to behave.

Audero, who spent the 2023-24 season at Inter, turned and shook his head at the fans shortly before play resumed, three minutes after the incident.

Serie A leader Inter was 2-0 up at the time.

A luge love story: These Olympics have a lot of meaning for Emily and Dominik Fischnaller

Long-distance relationships can be difficult, especially when they go on for years and years. And the one between Olympic luge athletes Emily Sweeney of the U.S. and Dominik Fischnaller of Italy was no different.

It was challenging. It pushed them to the limit at times. They wondered if it was going to work.

And in the ultimate moments, they would ask each other the same question:

“Are we worth it?”

“It was always a ‘Yes,’” Emily Fischnaller said.

Her last name changed last year, so yes, their luge love story got a happy ending. The couple, after dating for about 15 years — basically half their lives — finally got married. And in about a week, at Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, not far from their now-permanent home, the Fischnallers will slide for different countries at an Olympics where both are expected to be serious medal hopefuls.

It'll be the fourth Olympics for Dominik, the reigning men's singles bronze medalist, and the third for Emily.

“It's like a huge family fest, or party I would say, which just makes it great," Dominik Fischnaller said. "And I think we will have more time, I think, than other Olympics where we be more together. I want to enjoy this more than I did in other Olympics. Then, I was just focused on sliding, sliding, sliding. I didn’t really experience the atmosphere or anything. I hope this will be different for me this time and Emily is for sure a big part of that.”

There are more than a few couples who'll be together for these Olympics, some of them teammates, some of them competing against each other.

— U.S. alpine skiing star Mikaela Shiffrin — that sport's all-time wins leader — is engaged to Norway's Aleksander Aamodt Kilde, who returned to racing this season after dealing with major injuries for almost two years.

— Latvia's luge team includes the husband and wife pair of Martins Bots and Elina Bota, both singles sliders.

— American figure skaters Madison Chock and Evan Bates, the favorites to win ice dancing gold, married in 2024.

— U.S. women's hockey star Hilary Knight and U.S. women's speedskating great Brittany Bowe — with six Olympic medals between them — started dating in 2022.

— In women's skeleton, Kim Meylemans of Belgium and Nicole Rocha Silveira of Brazil have the dynamic of being opponents who are married to each other. When Meylemans clinched this season's World Cup title, Silveira — a three-time World Cup bronze medalist, two of those coming with her now-wife in either the gold or silver medal spot — was the first to run to her side for a congratulatory embrace. “Don’t think anyone truly understands how much I needed her with me (pushing & supporting me) to achieve this,” Meylemans wrote on Instagram.

USA Bobsled has a power couple as well, with reigning women's monobob world champion Kaysha Love getting engaged last year to Olympic men's push athlete Hunter Powell. She's in the Olympics for the second time; he is making his Olympic debut.

“We have love for one another, but at the end of the day, he’s my teammate when we’re out there training or practicing," Love said. “For me, it’s a secret weapon, to have a teammate that you know only has trust and belief in you. When I know that I am supported, I just feel like I’m able to do unthinkable things.”

Dominik and Emily Fischnaller say they relate to that.

They began dating when they were teenagers. They would see each other all season, of course, since the luge World Cup tour is basically one big traveling road show hopping between tracks in Europe, North America and Asia. They would find time in the summers to connect as well.

Eventually, they decided to get married. It's not always that simple in Italy; rules and regulations make the process of scheduling a wedding somewhat complex. When the couple got the approval last spring, they pulled it off in nine days — rings were bought quickly, a dress was found fast and off to a courthouse they went with just a few relatives in tow.

“The actual day, it was pretty perfect," Emily Fischnaller said. "Even at the end of the day, Dominik said he had his perfect wedding, which I never thought was possible for him to say.”

They've built a home in Italy by basically rebuilding his childhood home. There's talk of starting a family; the Fischnallers are closer to the end of their competitive careers than they are the beginning, but sliders often say they're going to retire and then find a reason to stick around or come back. In short, what happens after these Olympics isn't totally clear.

“It just feels like we’re setting up a future instead of just living in the present," Emily Fischnaller said. "It's exciting.”

He is an Olympic medalist. She's the bronze medalist from last year's world championships. On any given day, both have proven they can be the best in the world. And they've overcome plenty along the way; Emily Fischnaller broke her neck and back in a run at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics and still deals with aftereffects of that crash at times.

“I tell her she can’t get hurt because I feel the pain even 10,000 times more than she feels her own pain,” Dominik Fischnaller said. “I’m extremely nervous when she’s sliding. I almost can’t watch the race.”

But he'll watch her at the Olympics. She'll watch him, too. And if all goes right, they'll watch each other make their way to the medal stand.

Either way, when it's over, they might just ask each other their go-to question one more time.

“Are we worth it?”

The answer, once again, surely will be yes.

“We're here. We're happy," Dominik Fischnaller said. “And we're having a good life.”

Alexander Volkanovski dominates Diego Lopes for unanimous decision win at UFC 325 in Australia

SYDNEY (AP) — In a masterful performance, as he’s done so many other times, Alexander Volkanovski successfully defended his featherweight title with a unanimous decision over Diego Lopes at UFC 325 on Sunday afternoon.

New South Wales native Volkanovski (29-4-0) won on all three judges’ scorecards 49-46, 49-46 and 50-45, much to the delight of the crowd inside Sydney Olympic Park.

With precision punches and stellar footwork, Volkanovski looked even more dominating than he did during his unanimous decision victory over Lopes (27-8-0) at UFC 314 on April 12 in Miami.

“We were ready for him to make the right adjustments; his team did a good job,” Volkanovski said. “Last (fight), we moved to the right, he did a great job of cutting that off. But that just means I’m going to use all my other tools.”

Which he did, dominating nearly all 25 minutes of the fight, something the 37-year-old admitted he would have rather not needed against his younger foe.

“I wanted to grab a hold of him and put him down, but he was strong; I didn’t want to stand for 25 minutes, I’ll be honest,” Volkanovski said. “But we got the job done.”

After an uneventful first round that was littered mostly with layered feints from both fighters, the action picked up in the second round.

Volkanovski even attempted a jumped guillotine that Lopes slipped out of before attempting a rear-naked choke at the end of the round.

Both fighters landed massive right hands in the third round, the champion with a double-right that staggered Lopes and the challenger with a quick strike that briefly dropped Volkanovski to his knees.

Volkanovski, who tied Jose Aldo for the most title fight wins in UFC featherweight history with eight, was methodical over the final two rounds to seize the win in front of his hometown fans.

“I almost had my moment in Perth,” Volkanovski said, referring to his lightweight championship loss to Islam Makhachev at UFC 284 on Feb. 12, 2023. “But I got my moment here in Sydney.”

In the co-main event, No. 8 lightweight Benoit Saint Denis (17-3-0) got his fourth-straight victory when he scored a technical knockout of No. 6 Dan Hooker (24-14-0) at the 4:45 mark of the second round.

Saint Denis, who hasn’t seen a third round since his UFC debut in 2021, began a ground and pound with several brutal elbows before finishing with a bevy of punches.

In a lightweight bout, No. 14 Mauricio Ruffy (13-2-0) used a flurry of punches that began with a thunderous right hand to score a technical knockout of No. 9 Rafael Fiziev (13-5-0) at the 4:30 mark of the second round.

In what culminated with a bloodied slugfest in the third and final round of their heavyweight battle, No. 15 Tallison Teixeira (9-1-0) earned a unanimous decision over No. 12 Tai Tuivasa (15-9-0).

Quillan Salkilld (11-1-0) opened the main card by making quick work of Jamie Mullarkey (18-9-0) with a rear-naked chokehold in the first round. It was Salkilld’s fourth-straight win.

New Falcons coach Kevin Stefanski adds more Browns flavor to staff by naming Alex Van Pelt QBs coach

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) — New Atlanta coach Kevin Stefanski added more Cleveland Browns flavor to his Falcons staff by hiring Alex Van Pelt as quarterbacks coach on Saturday night.

Van Pelt joins offensive coordinator Tommy Rees as former Cleveland coaches on Stefanski's staff.

Stefanski spent six seasons with Cleveland, where he twice was named AP Coach of the Year and had a 45-56 record. He was fired on Jan. 5 after the Browns finished a 5-12 season.

Van Pelt was a senior offensive assistant for the Los Angeles Rams in 2005 after serving as offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots (2024) and the Browns (2020-23). Van Pelt worked on Stefanski's staff in Cleveland.

In Atlanta, Van Pelt will be charged with developing quarterback Michael Penix Jr , who is rehabbing a torn ACL that ended his 2025 season.

In New England, Van Pelt guided rookie quarterback Drake Maye to the Pro Bowl. While in Cleveland, Van Pelt worked with Stefanski to lead the Browns' offense to two of the top-five single-season point totals in franchise history, totaling 408 points in 2020 and 396 in 2023.

Stefanski was hired as coach on Jan. 17. The Falcons completed their remake of their new leadership team on Thursday night by hiring Ian Cunningham as general manager. The additions of Cunningham and Stefanski followed the hiring of former longtime Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan as president of football.

Cunningham and Stefanski will report to Ryan.

Falcons owner Arthur Blank fired general manager Terry Fontenot and coach Raheem Morris after an 8-9 season.

Van Pelt was the quarterbacks coach for the Cincinnati Bengals in 2018-19. He held multiple roles with Green Bay from 2012-17, including four seasons as the quarterbacks coach.

Boxer Jarrell Miller has his hairpiece knocked upward by a punch, then throws it into the crowd

NEW YORK (AP) — Boxer Jarrell Miller was hit with such a good punch it knocked his hair off.

The heavyweight was facing Kingsley Ibeh on Saturday night when Ibeh landed a flurry of shots in the second round that caused a roar from the crowd, despite not looking particularly hard.

But one of the punches knocked Miller’s head backward, and his hairpiece popped upward from the front, revealing a large bald spot that covered most of his head.

Miller finished the round with the hairpiece, then ripped it off in his corner between rounds and tossed it into the crowd at Madison Square Garden.

Miller won by split decision, then rubbed the top of his head while doing a celebratory dance. He said in his interview in the ring afterward that he lost his hair a couple days earlier after using a bottle of shampoo he found at his mother's house.

The boxer from Brooklyn was fighting on the undercard of the event topped by Teofimo Lopez's title bout against unbeaten Shakur Stevenson, in what was his first fight at Madison Square Garden. Miller was supposed to fight at the arena against then-heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua in 2019, but failed a drug test. Andy Ruiz replaced him and upset Joshua.

Mariners hungry for 1st World Series appearance after disappointing end to banner 2025 season

SEATTLE (AP) — The day after longtime Mariners broadcaster Rick Rizzs announced he will retire at the end of the 2026 season following his 41st year in the Seattle booth, he pleaded for the team to win the World Series this fall.

And at the Mariners’ fan fest Saturday at T-Mobile Park, countless key players from last year’s team, which came within one win of the franchise’s first World Series appearance, echoed the same sentiment. Perhaps nobody’s tune was louder than that of star center fielder Julio Rodríguez, who spoke on behalf of the club.

“I think this year is going to do wonders for us,” Rodríguez said. “I think we’re all in a better place.”

Seattle brought back many important contributors from last year’s team, which went 90-72 and won the franchise's first AL West title since 2001. It won’t just be catcher Cal Raleigh, who became the seventh player in major league history to hit 60 homers in a season, returning to the Emerald City.

There’s also first baseman Josh Naylor, who agreed to a five-year, $92.5 million contract with the Mariners in November. Naylor endeared himself to Seattle’s fan base with his aggressive style while hitting .299 with nine home runs and 19 stolen bases in 54 games after being acquired at the trade deadline.

“I can’t wait to spend a full season here, make some great memories,” Naylor said. “My goal is to win a World Series every year, and (I) really want to try to do that for this city and this organization and everyone involved.”

Still, the sting of a disappointing finish to a banner season continues to haunt various Mariners, just as it did in October in the days shortly after they were eliminated by the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series. At the very least, though, it set a precedent for what the Mariners expect of themselves in 2026 and beyond.

Seattle starter George Kirby, who was third on the team in wins (10) last year, thinks getting to the ALCS should be the standard for this group moving forward.

“Getting to where we did, I feel like that’s the floor for us this year,” Kirby said. “Anything else kind of doesn’t cut it.”

Mariners manager Dan Wilson, entering his second full season at the helm, expressed a similar level of confidence in his team, which returns five players who were worth at least 3.8 Wins Above Replacement last season, according to baseball-reference.com. Perhaps unsurprisingly, president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto and general manager Justin Hollander didn’t add many players to Seattle’s roster.

While veteran infielder Jorge Polanco — who had 26 home runs last season — left via free agency for the New York Mets, the Mariners did add outfielder Rob Refsnyder, who hit .269 with nine home runs and an .838 OPS in 70 games last year. Slugging third baseman Eugenio Suárez, obtained in a July trade, remains a free agent, so Seattle could turn to 25-year-old Ben Williamson, who was a rookie last year, to man the hot corner.

Otherwise, the Mariners will be putting their faith in a core led by Rodríguez, Raleigh, Naylor and right-handed starting pitchers like Kirby, All-Star Bryan Woo, Logan Gilbert, Luis Castillo and Bryce Miller.

“I love this group,” Wilson said. “To have that core continue to be together, you can add pieces to that as we have. And I think Jerry and Justin do an outstanding job of that. And the pieces, because there’s a core, the pieces fit in pretty quickly. I don’t anticipate that being any different.”

It remains to be seen how Refsnyder and prospects like Williamson, fellow young infielder Cole Young and others will slot into Seattle’s plans. The 2025 season remains one worth celebrating, but as Raleigh put it, the Mariners must build off what they already accomplished, or risk last year turning into a one-hit wonder.

“What we’re trying to accomplish here is winning a World Series and setting the standard, the bar, the expectations super high,” Raleigh said, “because that’s where we want to be. I think that’s kind of the way we’re looking at it.”

Saint-Maximin leaves Club America after racist attacks on his daughters

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Former Newcastle United winger Allan Saint-Maximin's spell with Club America in Mexico’s top-flight has ended abruptly after a racist incident involving his children, the club announced on Saturday.

The 28-year-old Saint-Maximin played just 16 league matches, nine of them as a starter and was in the first of a two-year contract that he signed last August.

“The problem is not the color of skin, it’s the color of thoughts. I am being attacked, that’s not a problem. I have grown up, I have learned to fight against attacks. But there is one thing I will never tolerate, and that is attacks on my children,” wrote Maxin on his social media accounts on Thursday.

Neither the player or Club America went onto specifics about the incident.

Saint-Maximin moved to Mexico after a one-year stint with Turkey’s Fenerbahce where he played on loan from Saudi Arabia’s Al Ahli.

He traveled alongside his wife and his three children: two daughters named Lyana and Ninhia, and a son named Dayde.

"It’s regrettable that an act of racism occurred against his daughters, something that had already happened more than once. It was something he wouldn’t tolerate, and we condemn it,” said Club América's coach André Jardine on Saturday.

“Unfortunately, he went through that, and now we must demand action against racism because there is no place for it in the world.”

America announced the move after securing a 2-0 win over Necaxa in the fourth round of the Clausura tournament. Saint-Maximin was not with the team for the match.

Jardine, who led Brazil to the gold medal in the 2020 Olympic Games, added that besides racism, the French player struggled to adapt to Mexico City.

“He’s a fantastic player who was doing well, he has the level for any league in the world, but it was a big change for him to come from Europe to Mexico,” added the coach. “There are things that weigh on him: his family, the food, his habits, and the way of life.”

Saint-Maximin, a former France youth international, debuted with Saint-Etienne in his home country, moved to Monaco and Nice, and in 2019 to Newcastle in the English Premier League, where he spent four seasons.

He scored 13 goals across 124 appearances for the Magpies, but struggled with injuries.

Indiana tops UCLA 98-97 in double OT, ending Bruins' 14-game winning streak at home

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Freshman Trent Sisley made the first of two free throws with less than a second remaining in a second overtime and Indiana outlasted UCLA 98-97 on Saturday.

Nick Dorn hit six 3-pointers and scored a season-high 26 points for the Hoosiers (15-7, 6-5 Big Ten Conference) in a third straight victory following a four-game losing streak. Lamar Wilkerson added 24 points and eight rebounds.

Indiana reserve Reed Bailey totaled 24 points before fouling out in OT. He made 6 of 7 shots and 12 of 13 free throws. His only miss at the foul line came with eight seconds left in regulation, leading to a 3-pointer by Trent Perry that forced the first extra period tied at 76.

Perry made all 10 of his free throws and scored 25 to lead the Bruins (15-7, 7-4), who fall to 12-1 at home after winning 14 straight dating to last season. Donovan Dent totaled 24 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out with 0.3 seconds left, leading to the winning free throw. Tyler Bilodeau added 18 points and 11 rebounds before fouling out.

It was UCLA's first OT game at home in four years and their first double OT game there in 11 years.

Perry had 11 points in the first half to help UCLA build a 38-30 advantage.

Indiana played from behind until Dorn hit a 3-pointer to give the Hoosiers a 45-43 lead with 14:14 remaining. UCLA trailed by 10 before outscoring Indiana 15-5 over the final 1:50 to force OT.

Indiana's Sam Alexis had a layup to tie it 84-all with six seconds left, leading to a second extra period after Perry missed a jumper.

No. 18 Vanderbilt survives Ole Miss 71-68 in game moved because of storm

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tyler Tanner scored 24 points and No. 18 Vanderbilt survived a late scare to beat Mississippi 71-68 on Saturday at Memorial Gymnasium.

The game was originally scheduled to be played in Oxford, Mississippi, but due to severe winter weather this week, the university has closed its campus until Feb. 8. Ole Miss and Vanderbilt switched home games, with the Commodores now traveling to Oxford on March 4.

Vanderbilt (19-3, 6-3 Southeastern) was still without its second-leading scorer, Duke Miles, but once again got a massive lift by Tanner, who is averaging 17.5 points a game this season.

AK Okereke broke into double figures with 17 points, making 11 of 13 free throws.

Malik Dia and AJ Storr each had 16 points for Ole Miss (11-10, 3-5).

The Rebels were able to pull within three points in the final seconds and outscored the Commodores 45-40 in the second half.

White Sox are counting on Japanese slugger Munetaka Murakami to add pop to their lineup

CHICAGO (AP) — White Sox left-hander Anthony Kay spent the past two years in Japan pitching for the Yokohama DeNA BayStars and got a good look at Munetaka Murakami in the opposing batter's box.

The Japanese slugger brings some much-needed pop to Chicago's lineup, and Kay looks forward to seeing the impact Murakami has on their new team.

“He was not fun to face,” Kay said.

Though he wasn't on hand, Murakami was a big topic of conversation at the White Sox fan festival this weekend. He got a big ovation when his name was announced on Friday, and he was featured in a video that he wrapped up by saying “Go White Sox!”

Chicago expects Murakami, who turns 26 on Monday, to deliver in a big way after signing a $34 million, two-year contract in late December. He hit .270 with 246 homers and 647 RBIs in 892 games over eight seasons with the Yakult Swallows of Japan’s Central League.

The left-handed-batting corner infielder launched 56 home runs in 2022 to break Sadaharu Oh’s record for a Japanese-born player in Nippon Professional Baseball while becoming the youngest player to win the triple crown there. He hit more than 30 homers four straight years before an oblique injury limited him last season.

Murakami finished 2025 with 24 homers and 47 RBIs in 56 games. He said at his introductory news conference in Chicago that he has recovered and is ready to show what he can do in the majors.

The White Sox are looking forward to it, too.

“I was excited,” shortstop Colson Montgomery said. “I knew who he was because I watched him in the World Baseball Classic and I saw him tear it up. The fact that we have him on our team, I'm happy about that. I'd rather him be on our team than anyone else's. I think I could just tell the excitement that he had. You can kind of see that he’s very excited to be with this core group that we have and be able to just go out there and win games.”

Murakami came through with some big hits to help Japan win the 2023 World Baseball Classic. His game-ending double off Giovanny Gallegos drove in Shohei Ohtani and Masataka Yoshida for a 6-5 semifinal win over Mexico. The following day in the championship game, Murakami hit a tying home run off Merrill Kelly in the second inning and Japan went on to beat the United States 3-2.

Murakami is joining a team with three straight 100-loss seasons and back-to-back last-place finishes in the AL Central. The White Sox went 60-102 last year, though they also made a 19-game improvement from 2024, when they finished 41-121 and set a modern-era major league record for losses.

Chicago was second to last in the American League with 165 home runs last season. But with Murakami joining a promising core of young hitters that includes Montgomery, Kyle Teel and Chase Meidroth, the White Sox expect to have more pop.

“Obviously, the power is real,” manager Will Venable said. “We’ve seen that from afar. But he’s just somebody that’s really committed to getting better. I think that’s been really apparent in the communication that we’ve had with him. He talks a lot about his defense. He wants to be a great baserunner, and so just to be on the ground floor with him and go to work and see him go about his business is going to be really exciting.”

One knock against Murakami is his contact and strikeout rates. He struck out 977 times in 3,780 plate appearances over eight seasons with Yakult, but he also had a .557 slugging percentage and 614 walks.

“He does hit a lot of homers,” Kay said. “He didn't have any problem with the velocity I had. I don't understand why he can't have a lot of success over here. There will probably be an adjustment period for him. Pitchers might be able to figure him out for a little bit, but he's a good enough hitter where he can also make adjustments.”

Kingz scores 28, Starling has 21 for Syracuse in 86-72 win over Notre Dame

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Nate Kingz scored 28 points and JJ Starling added 21 for Syracuse in an 86-72 win over Notre Dame on Saturday night.

William Kyle III had 10 points and eight rebounds for the Orange (13-9, 4-5 Atlantic Coast Conference). Naithan George dished 10 assists and had a pair of steals.

An 11-0 run by Syracuse in the first half put them up by double digits early, carrying a 40-31 lead into halftime. Starling scored 17 points in the first half on a perfect 7 of 7 shooting from the field and 3 of 3 from beyond the arc.

The Irish (11-11, 2-7) got as close as six in the second half, off a 3-pointer from Cole Certa. After that, the Orange went on a 9-0 run to pull away for good.

Notre Dame was led by Jalen Haralson, who scored 26. Braeden Shrewsberry put up 17 points to go with five rebounds.

The win was Syracuse's fifth consecutive at home against Notre Dame, dating back to the 2020-21 season.

UNC freshman Caleb Wilson puts on a high-flying show for the home folks in Atlanta

ATLANTA (AP) — Caleb Wilson put on quite a show for the home folks, including a dazzling dunk that looked like he was about to soar out of the building.

Maybe he'll be wearing a more familiar uniform next season.

The 6-foot-10 native of Atlanta scored 22 points and added three more slams to his nation-leading total, leading No 16 North Carolina to a 91-75 rout of Georgia Tech on Saturday.

Wilson is projected to be one of the top picks in this summer's NBA draft. The hometown Hawks figure to be one of the teams selecting early, having landed a first-round choice from the lowly New Orleans Pelicans in a trade.

“I would love to play for the Hawks,” Wilson said. “It would be nice to come back home and play for my home city, but then again I'm just ready to make an impact for whatever’s out there.”

He sure showed off his skills against Georgia Tech, though it took him a while to get going. The Yellow Jackets double-teamed Wilson at the offensive end, forcing him to look for his teammates.

Turns out, that was just what the Tar Heels needed.

“It started with Caleb,” coach Hubert Davis said. “I thought they would have to double the post if we threw the ball into Caleb. Instinctively, as soon as the ball touched his hands, he got it to the open teammate. That ignited everyone else on how to play.”

When the Yellow Jackets backed off Wilson, he took control of the game. The freshman scored 14 points in the final 7:46 of the half, pushing North Carolina to a 52-37 lead at the break.

“I just had to figure out what's going on,” Wilson said nonchalantly.

His most spectacular play came at the end of a fast break, as the Tar Heels raced from one end of the court to the other after a Georgia Tech miss.

Kyan Evans lobbed the ball toward the basket, but it looked to be too high for Wilson. Not at all. He leaped up to snare it with his right hand — and slammed it through the hoop in a stunning display of his high-flying style.

“I just jumped as high as I could,” Wilson said. “I didn't want it to be a turnover. I wanted to try to grab it and save it. So I grabbed the ball and just threw it in the hole.”

Wilson set a couple of school freshman records by notching his 15th game with 20 points and reaching double-figure points for the 21st consecutive game to start his college career.

It doesn't figure to be a long stay in Chapel Hill, obviously.

The NBA beckons — possibly with a return to Atlanta.

He's already played well in a couple of appearances in his hometown, scoring 20 points and grabbing 15 rebounds when the Tar Heels edged Ohio State 71-70 a little over a month ago during the CBS Sports Classic at nearby State Farm Arena, which just happens to be home of the Hawks.

“I think for anybody, being able to come back home is a big deal,” Davis said. “He grew up with traffic about 25 minutes from here. One of the things that did help him today was he already played in Atlanta. ... He played really well against Ohio State, but I think he came in more settled this time, the second time around.”

Wilson was thrilled to have another strong performance in the A-T-L, with plenty of family and friends rooting him on.

“I know there are people looking out for me,” he said. “People who want to see me do well.”

Mikel Brown Jr. scores 20 to help No. 20 Louisville rally past SMU 88-74

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Mikel Brown Jr. scored 20 points off the bench, Isaac McKneely added 14 and No. 20 Louisville used a 10-0 second-half run to rally past SMU 88-74 on Saturday.

The Cardinals (15-6, 5-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) overcame a cold start and 47-44 halftime deficit to take their first lead at 55-53 on Kobe Rodgers' transition layup with 14:37 remaining. SMU eventually went ahead 62-61, but Aly Khalifa (eight points) scored five during their pivotal spurt and Louisville steadily stretched the lead to bounce back from Monday night's 83-52 rout at No. 4 Duke.

Mustangs guard Boopie Miller, the ACC's No. 4 scorer, had 20 points for his 28th consecutive double-digit scoring game. SMU (15-6, 4-4) entered the game with the league's top offense (87.3 points per game) and had won its past two.

Louisville entered averaging 86 points and reached that mark behind 52% shooting after halftime and 49% overall. The Cardinals' bench provided the biggest boost, dominating the Mustangs 47-5 while holding them to 37% shooting in the second half.

Brown regrouped from 1-of-13 shooting against the Blue Devils to make 7 of 14 from the field with three 3-pointers. The heralded freshman guard also had three rebounds and four assists.

McKneely made 5 of 10 with four 3s, Khani Rooths and Ryan Conwell added 12 points and J'Vonne Hadley had 10.

SMU made 4 of its first 5 3s and 5 of 9 shots overall for a 14-4 lead and 47-44 advantage at the break behind 59% shooting. Louisville overcame a 4-of-12 shooting start to close the first half 13 of 24.

Atletico Madrid striker Sorloth taken to hospital after clash of heads

VALENCIA, Spain (AP) — Atletico Madrid striker Alexander Sorloth was taken to a hospital after he knocked heads with a Levante player in a La Liga game on Saturday, the club said.

Sorloth, a Norway player, collided with Levante defender Matías Moreno while disputing a ball in the 27th minute of the scoreless draw. Both were substituted immediately.

Atletico said Sorloth endured head trauma and was taken to a hospital in Valencia for medical tests.

Levante did not immediately report on Moreno's status.

The 30-year-old Sorloth has 10 goals across all competitions for Atletico this season. It is in third place in La Liga and will face Club Brugge in a Champions League playoff next month.

He also helped Norway qualify for the World Cup in North America.
