Chelsea youth talent completes surprise deadline day move to Tottenham

Chelsea did not make any significant first-team signings on deadline day, but there was quite a bit of activity involving their academy players.
Winger Ato Ampah made a move to Stoke City in a seven-figure transfer, and Yahya Idrissi headed over to AC Milan.
But the most unexpected move came from one of the Blues’ under-18s, who ended up joining Spurs.
This is everything you need to know about Joel Vidal-Philbert’s surprise deadline day switch to Tottenham.
Joel Vidal-Philbert completes Tottenham move on deadline day

Chelsea’s academy signed Joel Vidal-Philbert from West Ham when he was 14 years old during the 2023/24 season.
The right winger made five appearances for Chelsea’s under-18s in the U18 Premier League, finding the net once during that spell.
Opportunities were limited though, with Ibrahim Rabbaj ahead of him in the pecking order at Cobham.
Chelsea released an official statement regarding Vidal-Philbert’s transfer, reading: “We thank Joel for his efforts during his time at the club and wish him well as he takes the next step in his career.”
The youngster posted a message on Instagram following his move to Spurs, saying: “Happy to be at this wonderful club.”
He has previously represented England at under-16 level, suggesting he is considered a player with real potential within the game.
Player movement from Chelsea’s academy in the January window
During the January transfer window, seven players departed Chelsea’s academy on either a permanent or loan basis. The complete list of those exits is provided below:
- Ato Ampah (£3m to Stoke City)
- Leo Castledine (£2.1m to Middlesbrough)
- Frankie Runham (Loan to Ipswich Town)
- Ted Curd (Loan to Boreham Wood)
- Yahya Idrissi (Undisclosed to AC Milan)
- Joel Vidal-Philbert (Undisclosed to Tottenham)
- Joseph Wheeler-Henry (Loan to Brentford)
Moves for Ampah and Leo Castledine are expected to assist Chelsea in meeting the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Frankie Runham is also anticipated to make a permanent departure from the West London club soon.
On the other hand, both Yahya Idrissi and Vidal-Philbert were unable to secure regular places in Chelsea’s U18 starting line-up before their departures.
