Jusuf Nurkić reportedly out for season with nose surgery as season-ending injuries pile up for Jazz

The Utah Jazz are running out of players to put in their front court. Utah Jazz center Jusuf Nurkić will undergo a season-ending surgical procedure on his nose, according to NBA insider Chris Haynes. Nurkić has reportedly experienced complications of breathing and sleeping since fracturing his nose a few years ago.

Nurkić averaged 10.9 points, 10.4 rebounds and 4.8 assists while shooting 50.3% from the field in his first season with the Jazz. The 31-year-old has also spent time playing for the Charlotte Hornets, Phoenix Suns, Portland Trail Blazers and the Denver Nuggets.

Nurkić is the latest Jazz player to be ruled out for the rest of the season. Jaren Jackson Jr. was also ruled out for the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery on his left knee. Jackson was reportedly shut down to ensure his long-term health after a localized PVNS growth was discovered post-trade.

Jackson was acquired by the Jazz in a trade in February that sent multiple players and three future first-round picks to the Memphis Grizzlies. Jazz center Walker Kessler played in five games this season before undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder.

With Nurkić ruled out, expect the Jazz to go with Kyle Filipowski, 37-year-old Kevin Love and two-way contract player Oscar Tshiebwe. The Jazz could also experiment with playing star forward Lauri Markkanen at center, as long as he is not shut down.

The Jazz injuries come at a time when the league is trying to crack down on tanking, with teams near the bottom of the standings eyeing a loaded 2026 NBA Draft. The Jazz and the Indiana Pacers were recently fined for “overt tanking behavior."

The Jazz and Pacers have been under scrutiny because both team have a chance to keeping their 2026 NBA Draft pick depending on where they land. The Jazz can only keep their pick if land in the top eight of the draft.

Teams such as the Sacramento Kings and Washington Wizards have also recently sat star players they recently acquired. The Jazz are 18-39, currently second to last in the West.

Lindsey Vonn almost had leg amputated after Olympic crash

An emotional Lindsey Vonn shared on Instagram on Monday that she could have lost her left leg following her crash in the Winter Olympics.

Vonn revealed that the trauma from the crash led to compartment syndrome in her leg. Compartment syndrome is a condition caused by the building of high pressure within enclosed muscle compartments, which can restrict blood flow and damage nerves and muscles.

The 41-year-old alpine skier expressed her appreciation for Dr. Tom Hackett.

"Dr. Tom Hackett saved my leg," Vonn said. "He saved me."

She also said that Dr.Hackett would not have been there to save her leg if she had not torn her ACL in the World Cup downhill race. Vonn also broke her ankle in the crash. She said she has transitioned from lying in a hospital bed, almost completely immobile, to moving to a hotel. The next steps in her rehab are going home and progressing from being in a wheelchair to using crutches.

Vonn continued to compete despite her ACL tear, completing multiple training runs just weeks after her injury. Despite Vonn's resilience, she went down 13 seconds into her downhill run.

Despite the outcome, she still has no regrets. For her, the hard work was worth it. After retiring in 2019 after dealing with severe injuries, Vonn would make a comeback in Dec. 2024 after a successful knee replacement.

Driven by watching the younger skiers compete in 2022, Vonn would begin her quest to compete in the Winter Olympics, 16 years after she won gold in the downhill and bronze in the super-G at the 2010 Games.

"I'd rather go down swinging than not try at all," Vonn said. "I think what I was able to achieve was more than anyone expected to begin with."

Despite being sidelined, she was fully supportive of her teammates.

"It is not the way I wanted to end it but it has been inspiring to watch my teammates," Vonn said.

Williams spent his first four seasons with the Denver Broncos after getting drafted in the second round out of the University of North Carolina in 2021.

Andy Reid optimistic about Travis Kelce's return, uncertain on Tyreek Hill's health

The band might not be getting back together for the Kansas City Chiefs. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told reporters on Friday that he has been talking to tight end Travis Kelce about returning but is unsure about wide receiver Tyreek Hill's health status.

"There is communication," Reid said about Kelce's status. "That's the main thing. I've said this before: As long as there's communication, I'm good. That means people want to move forward. I think that's where Travis is."

While Reid has talked to Kelce about returning for his 14th season, he said he has not talked to Hill about reuniting with the team.

"I don't even know if Tyreek is healthy right now to do anything," Reid said. "So I'm sure he's working hard on that part of it and trying to get that all straightened out. Listen, we talk about everything. There's nothing happening there, but we know that he's out there and working hard, trying to get himself back to where he can play, period."

Hill last played for the Chiefs in 2021 before being traded to the Miami Dolphins the following season. The 31-year-old wide receiver was released by the Dolphins on Monday after four seasons with the team. Hill is recovering from a dislocated knee and a torn ACL that ended his season in Week 4.

In January, Hill reacted on Twitter after the Chiefs hired offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy. Hill had career years under Bieniemy, who previously coached in Kansas City. From 2018-21, Hill averaged 85.8 catches per year, with 1,213.5 receiving yards and 10.8 touchdowns.

Reid also told reporters that quarterback Patrick Mahomes is doing a great job in the rehab process. Mahomes is recovering from a season-ending torn ACL and LCL in his left knee that he suffered in Week 15.

De'Andre Hunter to become third Kings starter to undergo season-ending surgery amid franchise-record losing streak

Injuries and losses continue to pile up for the Sacramento Kings. Kings forward De'Andre Hunter will undergo season-ending eye surgery, according to NBA insiders Chris Haynes and Marc Stein.

Hunter, 28, was acquired by the Kings earlier this month in a trade that sent Dennis Schröder and Keon Ellis to the Cleveland Cavaliers. He was injured in his second game as a King against the Los Angeles Clippers on Feb. 6. This season, he averaged 13.7 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2 assists while shooting 41.5% from the field.

Hunter is the third Kings player to undergo season-ending surgery this week. Zach LaVine and Domantas Sabonis will also miss the rest of the season with their respective injuries. LaVine and Sabonis are the Kings’ highest-paid players and both rank among the team’s top three leading scorers.

Sacramento will now rely on a mix of veterans and young players in the absence of its top stars. DeMar DeRozan and Russell Westbrook are both over 35 years old, while the return of Keegan Murray from a left ankle sprain and contributions from rookie Maxime Raynaud could provide some bright spots.

The Kings’ shutdowns come amid the league’s efforts to combat tanking. The NBA has already fined the Indiana Pacers and the Utah Jazz for what commissioner Adam Silver described as “overt” tanking behavior.

Now on a franchise-worst 15-game losing streak, the 12–45 Kings haven't logged a win since Jan. 16 against the Washington Wizards. They hold the worst record in the NBA and are on pace to miss the playoffs for the third consecutive year. Before their playoff appearance in the 2022–23 season, the Kings endured a 16-season playoff drought.

Australian sports presenter Danika Mason apologized Thursday after drinking alcohol before a Channel Nine’s Today show live Winter Olympics broadcast. Mason slurred her words throughout the segment and went off-topic, discussing iguanas when the segment had been focused on coffee. Studio host Karl Stefanovic attempted to cover for Mason, saying that cold weather can affect speech.

“I want to take full responsibility, it’s not the standard I set myself,” Mason said Thursday. “So in saying that, I’m genuinely really sorry and I’m thanking everyone for those messages I’ve received as well.”

Mason added that she shouldn't have had a drink on an empty stomach and that the cold weather did not help.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, however, expressed his clear support for Mason.

“I’m pro Danika. Good on her,” Albanese said. “She’s over in Italy … and she would have been tired. It’s the time difference. It would have been having an impact. Nothing to see here."
