NFL updates on controversial rule review
The NFL is in offseason mode. The new league year is only 16 days away, and the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine gets underway this week.
The NFL is also reviewing rules with the competition committee. The most recent rule changes included the dynamic kickoff that was implemented in 2024.
One controversial rule that was tabled last offseason is one that is among the most polarizing in sports: the tush push. Some may call it the βbrotherly shoveβ as it signals credit to the most successful user in the Philadelphia Eagles.

The NFL gave a big update on Sunday evening ahead of the NFL Combine regarding this rule. Former Atlanta Falcons CEO Rich McKay told reporters there wasnβt a submission to review in this cycle.

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen jumps over the scrimmage line to get a touchdown during the second half of their game against the Baltimore Ravens at Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park on Sept. 7, 2025.
This is a relatively significant development, as last offseason, it was the biggest topic in the competition committee for rule review. This time around, no one seems to consider it a priority.
The rule has been subject to a lot of controversy. Those who are in favor of keeping it in the game say it is a play that is innovative and can be prevented.
Those who are against it bring up safety concerns or argue that it requires no real skill. It is worth mentioning, though, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts reportedly squats 600+ poundsβthatβs a skill in and of itself.

Hurts is at an exceptional advantage due to his incredible strength. The play requires a strong push by the offensive line, incredible leg drive, and reaction by the quarterback, and the βpushingβ party requires strength as well.

Regardless, it is a play that is in strong debate and under the microscope consistently in recent years. Is it a dangerous play? Is it fair?
Will the βtush pushβ ever be banned?
