ABC13 Athlete of the Week: Katy High School's Emily Beltran golden at state wrestling championships

For Katy High School senior Emily Beltran, there is nothing like wrestling at the state tournament at the Berry Center in Cypress.

"It's crazy," Beltran said. "You go down there, and you're waiting for your match; you feel all the eyes on you and the tension. It's definitely a lot of pressure, but when you win, it's a crazy feeling."

She knows a little about winning the state, but it didn't start that way.

"My freshman year, I was alternate, and then my sophomore year I went 0-2, finished 0-2 at state," she said.

She dropped a weight class, and the rest is history. Beltran finished her high school career with back-to-back state championships.

"It feels like a dream, like I can't. It feels surreal," she said after her state championship as a junior.

Her record as a junior and senior was 97-0.

"I had to be disciplined on my diet," she said. "I had to be disciplined on my workouts, so I feel like my second title has been well earned."

Beltran's wrestling journey is fueled by hard work and sacrifice.

"Days that you don't want to work at practice, you have to," Beltran said. "You have to think about your future. I don't want to work today, but I don't want to regret it tomorrow, you know? So you just have to enjoy pushing yourself."

Her discipline was ultimately rewarded.

"In the end, you'll be grateful that you didn't," Beltran said.

She told ABC13 that after her win, she no longer had to worry about cutting weight, so she'll celebrate by eating whatever she wants.

"Everything. Anything that I see," she said. "Maybe ice cream. Ice cream? Sushi. I don't know. Yeah, most likely sushi."
