Duke clinches share of ACC regular season title with 77-51 blowout win over Virginia

No. 1 Duke clinched a share of the ACC men's basketball regular season title with a dominant 77-51 win over Virginia on Saturday.Β

The victory also likely clinches a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament for the 27-2 Blue Devils, who finish the regular season with matchups at NC State and No. 18 North Carolina at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Duke could conceivably share the ACC regular season title with Virginia if it lost those final two games.Β

However, star freshman Cameron Boozer indicated that his team is not interested in a split championship, saying after the win, "We don't like to share."Β

A win in either of Duke's final two games will clinch the outright championship. The Blue Devils will be the No. 1 seed in the ACC men's basketball tournament, which begins March 10.

Isaiah Evans led Duke with 19 points, shooting 5-of-9 on 3-point attempts. Boozer followed with 18 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists as the Blue Devils won their sixth consecutive game and 16th in their past 17 contests.Β

Thijs De Ridder was the only Virginia player to score in double figures with 16 points. Chance Mallory added nine points off the bench for the Cavaliers, who fell to 13-3 in the ACC (and 25-4) with the defeat. A tough Duke defense held Virginia to just 16-for-55 shooting.

The Cavaliers end their first regular season under head coach Ryan Odom with home games versus Wake Forest (5-10 ACC) and Virginia Tech (7-8).

Duke moved up to No. 1 in this week's AP Top 25 poll after a 68-63 win over previously top-ranked Michigan last Saturday on a neutral court in Washington, D.C. Prior to defeating the Wolverines, the Blue Devils were the No. 2 team among the top 16 released by the NCAA tournament selection committee.Β

Joining Duke and Michigan (27-2) in the top four of those rankings were Arizona (26-2) and Iowa State (24-4). Houston (24-5) is also in position to seize a No. 1 NCAA tournament seed, though it came in at No. 6 in the committee's rankings.

Unrivaled first team headlined by Paige Bueckers and Kelsey Plum, both playing first seasons in 3-on-3 league

In their first season with Unrivaled, Paige Bueckers and Kelsey Plum were named to the 3-on-3 league's first team, announced on Saturday.Β

Chelsea Gray is the other member of the first team, earning the honor for the second consecutive season. Playing for Rose, Gray was Unrivaled's second-leading scorer, averaging 24.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, 6.1 assists and 1.3 steals per game. She also led the league shooting 48% on 3-pointers. Last season, Gray was named Finals MVP, leading Rose to the Unrivaled championship.Β

Plum had the third-highest scoring average at 22.6 points per game, adding 4.9 rebounds and 5 assists per game while shooting 40% on 3s for Phantom. This was her first season in Unrivaled after opting out of last year's inaugural campaign, and she helped Phantom to the best record in the league.

Also playing her first season in Unrivaled was Bueckers, the 2025 WNBA Rookie of the Year and No. 1 overall draft pick. Prior to the WNBA Draft, the UConn star signed a three-year contract with Unrivaled reportedly paying her more than her WNBA deal. Bueckers averaged 22.1 points per game for Breeze, the fourth-highest in the league, with 6.1 rebounds and 5.5 assists.Β

The All-Unrivaled second team featured Laces' Brittney Sykes, Phantom's Aliyah Boston and Mist's Allisha Gray. Boston was the league's fourth-leading rebounder, averaging 9.7 per game and 18.9 points. Sykes scored 20.3 points per game, shooting 40% on 3s, while Gray averaged 21.8 points.Β

Marina Mabrey, who led Unrivaled in scoring at 25.3 points per game for Lunar Owls, was not named to the first or second teams. Nor was Mist's Breanna Stewart, who averaged 21.4 points and 9.1 rebounds.

All six of the players making up the first and second teams are on clubs that made the Unrivaled playoffs, which begin on Saturday in Miami. Six of the league's eight teams qualify for the postseason.Β

Last season, Napheesa Collier, Chelsea Gray and Kayla McBride made up the All-Unrivaled first team. Collier also won the league MVP award playing for Lunar Owls. McBride played for Laces, but did not play in Unrivaled this season, opting instead to play for Fenerbahçe S.K. in the Turkish women's basketball league.

Collier also didn't play in Unrivaled this season after undergoing surgery on both of her ankles. That could sideline her for the beginning of the 2026 WNBA season as well, unless that tip-off is delayed by a work stoppage as a new collective bargaining agreement is negotiated.

Unrivaled's first and second teams were voted upon by players, coaches and media. Player balloting constituted 40% of the vote, followed by coaches at 35% and media making up 25%.Β

The Unrivaled playoffs begin Saturday with first-round games in Miami. Vinyl will match up versus Laces at 8:30 p.m. ET, while Breeze faces Rose at 9:45 p.m. ET. Phantom and Mist get first-round byes as the top two regular-season seeds.Β

Semifinal matchups will be played in Brooklyn on Monday, followed by the championship game in Miami on Wednesday.

Unrivaled: Kelsey Plum hits game-winner in Phantom's 72-68 win, clinching top seed in playoffs

Kelsey Plum hit the game-winning shot for Phantom in a 72-68 win over Rose in Unrivaled on Friday night. The victory clinched the top seed in the Unrivaled playoffs for Phantom, who finished the regular season 11-3.Β

With the target score set at 72 after Phantom finished the third quarter with a 60-56 lead, Rose cut its deficit to 64-63 on a layup by Sug Sutton. Plum and Angel Reese then traded 3-pointers to keep it a one-point game at 67-66. But Plum then followed with another 3 to put Phantom one basket away from the win.Β

A Lexie Hull layup made it a 70-68 game, but Rose couldn't get the defensive stop it needed on Phantom's next possession. Dribbling off a screen by Kiki Iriafen at the left wing, Plum drove into the lane and hit a short jumper over Hull for the win.

Plum finished with a game-high 35 points (hitting 6-of-12 3-pointers) with 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Tiffany Hayes followed with 17 points, adding 4 rebounds and 4 assists, while Iriafen scored 14 points and grabbed 14 boards.Β

Rose was led by Reese's 17 points and eight rebounds, with Kahleah Copper adding 16 points. At 6-8, Rose will be in the playoffs as the No. 5 seed.Β

Phantom finished last in Unrivaled last year at 4-10, but drafted Plum for this season and she made a big impact, scoring 22.6 points per game.

"I was just super grateful for the opportunity; I don't take that lightly," Plum said afterward, via broadcaster Wendell Epps. "I was excited to come to a team that was in last place. For me, I want to affect winning at the highest level."

Phantom finished ahead of Mist (10-4) for the top seed in the playoffs. Mist defeated Vinyl earlier on Friday, 72-62, and would have tied for the best record if Phantom had lost. However, the first tiebreaker is head-to-head record, and Phantom won both of the matchups with Mist, 64-61 on Jan. 12 and 83-71 on Feb. 7.

The Unrivaled playoffs begin Saturday with first-round games in Miami scheduled for 8:30 p.m. ET and 9:45 p.m. ET. Phantom and Mist will get first-round byes, while Laces face Vinyl and Breeze matches up versus Rose.Β

The two semifinal contests will be played in Brooklyn on Monday, followed by the championship game in Miami on Wednesday.Β

Hornets' Kon Knueppel breaks NBA rookie record for 3-pointers in single season

Charlotte Hornets forward Kon Knueppel broke the NBA record for most 3-pointers made by a rookie in a single season on Saturday.Β

He set the record late in the third quarter, taking a kickout pass from Sion James (also his college teammate at Duke last season). Knueppel then pump-faked Kam Jones and took a dribble to the left before stepping back behind the line and drilling the historic shot.Β

The previous mark for most 3s hit by a rookie was by the Sacramento Kings' Keegan Murray, set during the 2022-23 season when he knocked down 206.Β

Knueppel tied Murray's record late in the first half, stopping at the arc during a fast break to nail his fifth 3 of the game. He went 5-for-8 on 3-pointers in the first half, making his first four attempts. The rookie star had an opportunity to break the record before halftime, but missed a contested turnaround from the wing at the buzzer.

As could be expected for a rookie who's made over 200 3-pointers, Knueppel has made a high percentage of his long-range attempts shooting at volume. He came into Thursday's game making 43.6% of his 461 3-point shots, ranking 10th in the NBA.Β

Drew Brees, Warriors owner Joe Lacob among groups to submit bids for Padres ownership, per reports

Five ownership groups have placed bids to purchase the San Diego Padres, according to reports.Β

Among the groups showing interest is one involving Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees, who's part of a group led by Vuori founder and CEO Joe Kudla, The Athletic reports. Vuori, an activewear clothing brand, is based in Carlsbad, Calif., 35 miles away from downtown San Diego. Kudla and Brees are reportedly friends and workout partners, and the former QB, elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in February, regularly attends Padres games.

[Get more Padres news: San Diego team feed]

As expected, one of the bids is from Golden State Warriors team owner Joe Lacob, which was previously reported by The Athletic. Lacob. 70, has owned the Warriors since 2010, a span during which the team has won four NBA championships and become the most valuable team in the league. He has previously attempted to purchse the Athletics, Los Angeles Angels and Los Angeles Dodgers.Β

Two other groups that have reportedly expressed interest in buying the Padres are led by Dan Friedkin JosΓ© E. Feliciano, which was originally reported by Sportico.Β

Friedkin's Pursuit Sports group owns Premier League club Everton and AS Roma in Serie A. He also attempted to purchase the Boston Celtics before Bill Chisholm and his Symphony Technology Group won the bidding last spring. Feliciano and his private equity firm, Clearlake Capital, own Chelsea in the Premier League.

Bids were due for submission on Wednesday, The Athletic reported. Each of the five is reportedly viewed as "very strong" and a sale could be completed by the end of March, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The Seidler family which currently owns the Padres has been exploring a potential sale since November. John Seidler, brother of late team owner Peter Seidler, currently controls the family trust, and thus the Padres, after being approved by MLB owners a year ago.Β

The path to a sale was cleared when Sheel Seidler, Peter Seidler's widow, settled her lawsuit against her brothers-in-law, Bob and Matt Seidler. The lawsuit, filed in January 2025, alleged that the brothers committed "breaches of fiduciary duty and fraud" as trustees of the Seidler Trust that controls the franchise. John Seidler was not named in the lawsuit.

Peter Seidler died in November 2023 at the age of 63 after a months-long illness. He became the Padres' chairman and largest stakeholder after being part of the group that purchased the franchise in 2012.

The Seidler family is reportedly seeking a sale price close to $3 billion, according to The Athletic. The Padres were valued at $2.3 billion by Sportico last year. Steve Cohen purchased the New York Mets for $2.4 billion in 2020, the highest sale price for an MLB team.

Dolphins rank first, Steelers last in 2026 NFL players union surveys

The Miami Dolphins have extended their streak of ranking first in player satisfaction from the NFL Players Association annual player survey reports.Β

Players have been surveyed for the past four years and grade NFL teams are graded in several categories, including coaches and ownership, locker room condition, food and nutrition, weight room, training staff, treatment of families and travel accommodations. Grades range from A+ to F- each team is ranked from 1 to 32 in each category.Β

"Players consistently describe the organization as 'the best in the NFL,'" the survey said of the Dolphins in the survey, results of which were procured by ESPN.Β

Also repeating at the top of the rankings behind the Dolphins are the Minnesota Vikings at second. The Washington Commanders moved up from 11th in 2025 to third this year. Ranking last in this year's rankings are the Pittsburgh Steelers, dropping from 28th a year ago. Just above Pittsburgh among the bottom three are the Arizona Cardinals and Cleveland Browns at 30 and 29, respectively. (The Cardinals were last in 2025.)Β

"[Steelers owner] Art Rooney ranks last in the league for willingness to invest in facilities, a trend reflected in the Steelers' poor facility ratings across the board," according to the survey results. The Steelers' locker room received an F grade, complaining that "only five stalls are available for the entire team."Β

will be posting full NFLPA survey grades by each category shortly

The Steelers also graded last in "home field," a new category added to this year's survey.Β

"Players cite inadequate maintenance and excessive wear from hosting local college and high school games," said the survey results. "Players across the league note the poor condition of the field and emphasize the need for investment to bring it up to standard."

Pittsburgh's Acrisure Stadium hosts University of Pittsburgh football games, in addition to local high school games.Β

Additionally, the Steelers' training room and strength coaches ranked poorly. However, the team's training staff ranked first among NFL teams.

Unlike the previous three years of the survey, the NFLPA did not release team report cards publicly after the NFL won a grievance arguing that the surveys violated the collective bargaining agreement by "disparaging [league] clubs and individuals."Β

Responding to the ruling by an arbitrator, the union said that the surveys were "not going away." An NFL spokesperson told ESPN that the league had no knowledge of the survey results this year.Β

New York Jets team owner Woody Johnson was outspoken against the NFLPA report cards after his team ranked 29th in last year's survey. He argued that the surveys violated the agreement between teams and players and questioned whether the results were an accurate representation of player opinions. Those were the arguments that the NFL made in its grievance against the players' union.Β
