Major Rail Boost for North and West Wales: Get Ready for More Services and Faster Travel Starting May 2026!

In May 2026, Transport for Wales (TfW) will introduce one of the most substantial timetable changes for North Wales in a generation, set to improve travel options across the region. Effective from 17 May 2026, the new timetable aims to provide increased capacity, reliability, and connectivity for passengers, while also supporting the growing demand for sustainable travel and fostering stronger community connections. This change will increase the number of services on the North Wales Coast Line by around 50%, improving frequency and creating more seamless travel experiences.

Enhancing Travel Across North Wales and West Wales

For West Wales, additional trains will be introduced on busy, holiday routes, particularly during the summer months, supporting the region’s tourism economy. Extra services will be available on popular routes such as Carmarthen to Tenby until September, and on Sundays in August and September, ensuring better travel opportunities for locals and tourists alike. These changes reflect the wider Network North Wales investment programme, which strives to develop a high-frequency, integrated public transport network across the region.

New Standard Hourly Pattern for Easier Travel Planning

The new timetable introduces a standard hourly pattern for trains, which will run at fixed times each hour, making it easier for passengers to plan their journeys. Chester to Llandudno Junction, one of the busiest routes in the Wales and Borders rail network, will see a major increase in train frequency. This improvement aligns with the ongoing expansion of Pay as you Go (PAYG) services, set to launch in North Wales on 18 May 2026, offering passengers more convenient and flexible travel options.

Key Changes for Commuters and Tourists

Some notable changes include the combination of the Wrexham – Chester and Chester – Crewe services into a single through-service, extending the Liverpool – Chester route to Llandudno, and the Birmingham to North Wales service now running to Llandudno Junction instead of Holyhead. These adjustments offer direct travel between key destinations, enhancing connectivity and supporting local economic growth. Furthermore, Valley station will now become a compulsory stop on all relevant services, ensuring that passengers in the area have better travel access.

A Step Towards Stronger Regional Connectivity and Economic Growth

The upcoming timetable changes mark a crucial milestone in improving public transport infrastructure across North Wales. As Ken Skates, the Cabinet Secretary for Transport and North Wales, stated, these changes are part of a broader, Β£14bn investment to enhance the region’s rail network. This includes new trains, a fare freeze, and other significant improvements that aim to deliver long-term benefits for communities, travellers, and the regional tourism sector.

Improved Rail Services for Commuters and Businesses

The improved rail services will particularly benefit local commuters and businesses in the North Wales and West Wales areas. By improving the reliability and frequency of trains, TfW is not only making travel more accessible but also contributing to regional economic growth by making it easier for people to access employment and business opportunities. The changes are expected to have a significant positive impact on local communities and the overall quality of life in the region.

Planning Ahead for May 2026

Passengers planning to travel after the changes go live are advised to check journey details in advance, as some stations may see changes in train stopping patterns. Key hubs like Chester and Llandudno Junction will play a central role in these new connections, and TfW encourages passengers to stay updated by visiting their website for the most current information. The introduction of Pay as You Go will also be an important step in modernizing travel across North Wales, offering passengers the convenience and flexibility they need for everyday travel.

The Future of Travel in North and West Wales

The timetable changes and the ongoing Network North Wales project highlight TfW’s commitment to improving transport services across the region. As these upgrades continue, passengers can look forward to more reliable, frequent, and accessible rail services, making it easier for people to travel for work, leisure, and everything in between. With stronger connections and enhanced services, North Wales and West Wales are set to thrive in the years to come.
