Eastland Cougars are headed back to State after winning a Super-Sectional nail-biter

MACOMB, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) β€” The theme of this postseason for the Eastland Cougars appears to be the same as that of the late owner of the former Oakland Raiders Al Davis…”Just win baby!”

That’s what the Cougars have been doing throughout the postseason, winning by the narrowest of margins in some of their games, but their clutch play in crunch time has them headed back to the IHSA 1A State Tournament for the second straight year.

Monday night Eastland won the 1A Macomb Super-Sectional at Western Illinois University edging the Tremont Turks 47-45. Going back to the 1A Bureau Valley Regional, Eastland could have bowed out of postseason play right there, but Braden Anderson sank a 14-football jumper before time ran out for a 46-45 win over Orion.

Following that win, they knocked off a very good Dakota team 49-31 and then a good Pecatonica team in a tight battle 48-41 for a sectional championship.

Overall Eastland is 32-5 now. The Cougars will play Chicago Marshall (22-10) in a 1A State Semifinal game in Champaign Thursday morning at 11:45.

Eastland finished in fourth place at state last year.
