Blue Jays' rookie SP Trey Yesavage to begin season on IL with a right shoulder impingement

Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Trey Yesavage will begin the 2026 season on the injured list with a right shoulder impingement, the team announced on Thursday.

The 22-year-old Yesavage, who was thrust into the spotlight during the Blue Jays’ run to the World Series last season, will continue throwing to build up for the regular season. He is scheduled to pitch again on March 25, two days before the team's opening game against the Athletics.

According to Sportnet's Arden Zwelling, Yesavage arrived at Spring Training with the shoulder issue. That was a factor in his slow build up. With the regular season beginning in a week, he needs more time to get ready after throwing 35 pitches in a minor league game on Monday.

No timeline has been announced for Yesavage’s return.

After beginning last season at Single-A, Yesavage worked his way into the Blue Jays' staff during the postseason. He started five playoff games, including Game 1 of the World Series, and finished with 39 strikeouts and a 1.05 WHIP in 27.2 innings pitched. During Game 5 against the Los Angeles Dodgers, he set a World Series rookie record with 12 strikeouts during a 6-1 win.

Yesavage isn't the only Blue Jays starter out for the beginning of the season as José Berríos has a stress fracture in his right elbow and Shane Bieber is dealing with forearm fatigue. Manager John Schneider will have to make due with a staff made up of Dylan Cease, Kevin Gausman, Eric Lauer, Cody Ponce, and Max Scherzer.

Lionel Messi scores 900th career goal in Concacaf Champions Cup

Lionel Messi scored his 900th career goal during Inter Miami's Concacaf Champions Cup match on Wednesday against fellow MLS side Nashville SC.

The Argentinean star found the back of the net in the seventh minute, sneaking the ball past multiple defenders off a feed from Sergio Reguilón.

Messi's career goal total includes his time with Barcelona (672), Paris Saint-Germain (32), Inter Miami (81), and the Argentina national team (115).

“Clearly, we don’t fully grasp the magnitude of it; talking about him scoring 900 goals is insane, incredible for such a unique player,” said Inter Miami manager and Messi’s former teammate Javier Mascherano this week, via the Miami Herald. “The truth is, I always end up saying the same thing: Leo’s numbers are amazing, but above all, statistics are the least important aspect.

“You can score a lot of goals, the key is how you do it, and he’s managed not only to reach incredible numbers in terms of goals and assists, but also because of what he contributes to the game itself, which I believe is much more important than his stats.”

His first-ever goal came on May 1, 2005 during a 2-0 win over Albacete. The nearly 18-year-old forward entered the match in the 88th minute and didn't need long to make an impact. He scored not long after coming on, but the goal was taken back for offside. Moments later, he took a flick pass from Ronaldhino and lobbed goalkeeper Raúl Valbuena.

Over 15 seasons with Barça, Messi won 10 La Liga titles, seven Ballon d'Ors, six FIFA World Player of the Year awards, four Champions Leagues, and three Club World Cups, among numerous team and individual honors. He left the Spanish giants in 2021 to join PSG where he would spend two seasons before coming to MLS and signing with Inter Miami.

Could Messi reach 1,000 goals?

Messi's contract with Inter Miami runs through the end of the 2028 MLS season when he will be 41 years old. He has averaged 36 goals over a season for Inter Miami and Argentina since 2023, so 1,000 isn’t too much of a longshot. But injuries and load management have limited the soccer superstar over the past three seasons, something that will continue to be a concern for the duration of his current deal.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi's contemporary, has a much better chance to reach 1,000 goals. Currently sitting on 965, the Portuguese star is 41, but has netted over 30 goals in the Saudi Pro League with Al-Nassr in each of the past two seasons and is on pace to do so again in 2025-26. He has said that the 2026 World Cup will be his last, meaning his international career will likely end this summer.

Penguins' Sidney Crosby returning Wednesday after missing 11 games due to lower-body injury

Sidney Crosby will return to the Pittsburgh Penguins’ lineup Wednesday against the Carolina Hurricanes after missing 11 games with a lower-body injury suffered at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

“Excited to get back in it,” Crosby told reporters after the morning skate. “Just watching these guys, being on the [road] trip, obviously getting closer [to returning]. It’s been close. So, just happy to finally be back in there.”

It’s the second straight game that the Penguins will see a key player return to the lineup. Center Evgeni Malkin completed his five-game suspension for slashing Buffalo Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin and scored two goals and recorded an assist during Monday’s 7-2 win over the Colorado Avalanche.

Crosby’s injury happened during Canada's Olympic men's quarterfinal win over Czechia last month. He did not play in the semifinal win over Finland or the gold-medal game loss to the United States.

Upon returning to Pittsburgh, the Penguins announced on Feb. 25 that Crosby would be out at least four weeks.

Vegas Golden Knights forward Mitch Marner, who was teammates with Crosby on Team Canada, told reporters last week that Crosby suffered a Grade 2 MCL sprain.

Crosby last played for the Penguins on Feb. 5 before the Olympic break. The team went 5-3-3 in his absence and remain tied for second place in the Metropolitan Division on 83 points, seven behind the division leading Hurricanes.

There are 15 games to play in the regular season and despite his 11-game absence, Crosby still leads the team in goals (27) and points (59).
