Coach John Andrzejek leaves Campbell basketball: 'The institution now has different priorities'

John Andrzejek stepped down as Campbell's men's basketball coach on Wednesday, citing the school's shifted priorities in a post on social media.

β€œOver the last 6 months, it has become clear that Campbell has made the decision to shift their commitment from basketball," Andrzejek wrote. "Simply put β€” the institution now has different priorities, and they are not compatible with putting the kind of team on the floor that you deserve. As difficult as this is, I respect the decision and understand it as one that the University feels it must make in what are unprecedented times in higher education.”

Andrzejek joined Campbell in 2025 after a two-year stint as an assistant at Florida, where he helped lead the Gators to a national title.

In his sole season in Buies Creek, he led Campbell team to a 16-18 overall record and an 8-10 record in Colonial Athletic Association play. Campbell was eliminated in the semifinals of the CAA Tournament with a 74-64 loss to Monmouth.

The coach said he explored several options with Campbell's athletic department in hopes to move forward with the team, but it became clear that the school cannot support the program.

β€œDespite months of intense work and collaboration with AD Hannah Bazemore and our terrific athletics administration, and several creative options that were proposed and thoroughly explored, there are no pathways that the institution will support to fund the program appropriately moving forward,” he wrote.

Andrzejek will join Louisville as associate head coach, serving under coach Pat Kelsey, Campbell said in a statement.

Louisville (24-11, 11-7 Atlantic Coast Conference) earned a No. 6 seed in the men's March Madness bracket in 2026. The Cardinals were eliminated after a 77-69 loss to No. 3-seeded Michigan State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

A national search for Campbell's next coach will begin immediately, the school said in its statement.

Hawks surge past the Celtics 112-102, riding a big third quarter and a 13th straight home win

ATLANTA (AP) β€” Onyeka Okongwu and Jalen Johnson each scored 20 points, and three days after losing to the Celtics on the road, the Hawks responded with a 112-102 win over Boston on Monday night. It was Atlanta's 13th consecutive home win.

Okongwu (20 points, 10 rebounds) and Johnson each had double-doubles. It was Johnson's (20 points, 12 rebounds) 45th of the season.

A tightly contested first half with 10 ties and nine lead changes ended at 54-all as Nickeil Alexander-Walker hit a 27-foot 3-pointer to seal the first half. Atlanta carried that momentum into the third quarter, outscoring the Celtics 36-22 to take a 14-point lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

The Celtics climbed back from a 21-point deficit in the fourth quarter to come within eight points in the last two minutes. Johnson and Alexander-Walker helped put the game out of reach with four made free throws in the final minute.

Boston’s lineup looked different this time around, with Jaylen Brown returning after a two-game absence and Jayson Tatum on the bench with injury management. Tatum scored 26 points during the teams’ Friday meeting.

Brown had a team high 29 points and 10 rebounds. Luka Garza had 20 points and nine rebounds.

Dyson Daniels, Okongwu and Jonathan Kuminga returned to game action after missing Saturday's contest vs. the Kings. Daniels added 18 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals.

Walt Weiss savors a special debut as Braves manager in a 6-0 win over the Royals

ATLANTA (AP) β€” As Walt Weiss approached his first game as manager of the Braves, he couldn't help but think of those who held the seat before him.

There weren't many over the past 30 years, after all.

β€œIt's a little overwhelming,” Weiss said after the Braves' 6-0 win over the Royals on Friday night. "I don't take this responsibility lightly. Sitting in the seat that I'm in with this uniform on is really, really special, and there will never be a day that I'm in that seat that I take it for granted.”

Weiss was hired in November as the successor to Brian Snitker, the well-liked manager that led the Braves to a 2021 World Series title. Fredi Gonzalez held the position from 2010-16, and Bobby Cox was manager for the 20 years before (1990-2010).

Weiss is familiar with all of the above.

He played under Cox during his final three seasons of a 14-year professional career. In 2017, after a four-year stint as manager of the Rockies, Weiss returned to Atlanta as the Braves' bench coach, where he served as Snitker's right-hand man for eight years.

β€œThey don't come any better than Walt,” Snitker said during an in-game interview in the BravesVision TV booth. β€œEvery offseason when his name would come up as a managerial candidate, I'd call him. I'd be panicked because he's such a great baseball guy, a good person. He's going to do a great job here.”

The season opener was evidence that the Weiss era in Atlanta is welcomed by the team with open arms. Pitcher Chris Sale, who shut out the Royals for six innings and notched six strikeouts, said the team is ready to fight for the new manager.

β€œWho he is, what he means to this organization, but especially the guys in the clubhouse β€” man, like we really enjoy fighting for him, because we know he's fighting for us. It was really special," Sale said, adding that the team did a "nice little fun thing” in the clubhouse for him. Sale kept any detail of a passing of the torch celebration close to the vest, but Weiss revealed a little more.

β€œThey got this thing, when the player of the game β€” I wasn't player of the game, that was Sale β€” but they let me take the putt,” Weiss said. β€œIt's probably about a 30, 40 footer. And, you know, there's a lot of hootin' and hollerin' and stuff on the line. I got to do the player of the game putt, and they gave me a nice little gift for my first win.”

Weiss missed the putt, but overall, it was a sweet night for the new manager of the Braves, who secured a win and put any concern of another 0-7 start to rest.

β€œIt's just good to put that narrative behind us."

Added Weiss with a smile: β€œIt's nice to be 1-0.”
