Dodgers’ Mookie Betts Shows Promising Signs of Injury Recovery
Los Angeles Dodgers star Mookie Betts is coming along in his recovery from his oblique injury, showing signs of progress as he nurses himself back to health.
Betts happened to pick up an oblique injury while running the bases against the Washington Nationals on Saturday. Originally, it was thought to be a back injury, but upon further examination, he was deemed to have a mid-body injury.
The Dodgers placed Betts on the injured list following his diagnosis, putting him on the 10-day IL and adding Hyeseong Kim to the active roster in a corresponding move.
While the injury does leave the Dodgers with one less All-Star in the mix, the team has the depth to get by, with Kim being able to cover at shortstop along with Alex Freeland and Miguel Rojas.

Betts was seen doing work on the field on Tuesday, April 7, taking ground balls despite his injury. He was moving side to side without much pain and is seemingly in a “much better spot than originally anticipated,” and he “doesn’t even really notice that it hurts.”
The injury came when Betts was running the bases at the top of the first inning. He worked a walk before, showing a good eye.
Freddie Freeman came up to the plate next and hit a blistering double that scored Betts, but while running the bases from first to home, Betts noticed some pain.
“I just took off running. I’m not sure how or what happened,” Betts said. “Day was normal. Everything was normal. So I have no idea.”
Mookie Betts’ recovery status
The injury was characterized as “more moderate than significant,” by manager Dave Roberts, but he did not want to give an exact timeline of the injury.
Oblique strains can take 4 to 6 weeks to heal, but Betts’ optimism could lead to his return.
Regardless of the exact outcome, Roberts is optimistic that the Dodgers will find ways to continue to succeed.
“That’s the great thing about having the depth that a lot of teams don’t have,” Roberts said. “Being able to plug in a platoon at short and feel like you have good matchups is not all bad. And it gives other guys opportunities. But it’s a blow, for sure.”
