Samsung Electronics is reportedly planning a major restructuring of its China operations as it faces a strategic dilemma: whether to defend its declining market share in China or shift focus toward global competitiveness. Analysts suggest the company may prioritize global markets over continuing intense competition in China.

According to industry reports, Samsung is considering a broad overhaul that would streamline its presence in the country. The company is expected to retain only its mobile (smartphones) and memory (semiconductor chips) businesses, which are seen as its most profitable and globally critical segments. Meanwhile, it may exit or scale down divisions such as home appliances, consumer electronics, and display operations, which are reportedly underperforming.

Samsung is likely to continue prioritizing its semiconductor operations in China, supported by strong global demand for AI chips. The company has significantly increased investment in its Xi’an chip plant, with spending rising 67.5% year-on-year in 2025.

The restructuring may also involve workforce reductions in weaker divisions and operational changes, including outsourcing appliance distribution while retaining manufacturing. Despite its low smartphone market share in China, Samsung is expected to keep its mobile business due to its importance in the global supply chain and ecosystem.

Currently, Samsung maintains operations across semiconductors, consumer electronics, and R&D centers in Beijing and Nanjing, focusing on AI, telecommunications, and smartphones. While the plans are not officially confirmed, analysts believe Samsung is moving toward a leaner, more selective China strategy centered on high-value businesses and global leadership.
