Oilers suffer another blow with $8.5M centre injury before NHL playoffs
The Edmonton Oilers have taken another hit just days before the NHL playoffs, with centre Jason Dickinson ruled out for Saturdayβs clash against the Los Angeles Kings.
Dickinson suffered the injury during Wednesdayβs 5-2 win over the San Jose Sharks. He blocked a shot late in the third period and needed help leaving the ice. The 30-year-old is now considered day-to-day, but one specific update from head coach Kris Knoblauch has raised concerns.
Speaking to the media after Oilers practice on Friday, Knoblauch told reporters Dickinson will not be available for the Sharks game. However, he also added, βWe donβt have any timeline.β This uncertainty deepens concern around the Oilersβ forward depth at a crucial stage.

Dickinson, who is signed on a 2-year $8.5 million contract, was important for the Oilers, and his absence could force lineup adjustments. Curtis Lazar is expected to step in, while Adam Henrique may take on a bigger role down the middle. Dickinson had settled into a third-line centre role since arriving from the Chicago Blackhawks in March.
The Oilers acquired Dickinson to strengthen their defensive structure and penalty kill. He averaged over two minutes of short-handed ice time and added physical presence. While his offensive numbers are modest, his role in balancing the lineup has been important.

This injury adds to a growing list of concerns. Leon Draisaitl remains out for the regular season, while Zach Hyman and Mattias Janmark are also sidelined. Goaltender Connor Ingram is listed as day-to-day.

Despite setbacks, Edmonton sits first in the Pacific Division with 90 points. Connor McDavid continues to lead the charge and has 133 points, including 47 goals, after a dominant five-point performance against San Jose.
The Oilers need just one point to clinch a playoff spot, which is most likely secure. Still, the injuries are starting to test their depth at the worst possible time. They were looking to keep the top spot in the Pacific, which could be impacted in this situation.
