Borrego had been an assistant coach with the Pelicans since 2023 until he was promoted to interim head coach when former head coach Willie Green was fired in November after a 2-10 start to the season. Borrego went 24-46 during his time leading the Pelicans this season.
Before Borrego joined the Pelicans, he was the head coach of the Charlotte Hornets for four seasons. He went 138-163 with the Hornets and helped the team make the Play In tournament during his final two seasons in Charlotte but the team never advanced to the playoffs under his leadership.
