Billy Donovan and the Chicago Bulls have officially parted ways. On Tuesday, April 21, Donovan announced that he is stepping down as head coach after six seasons leading the team.

The news comes after weeks of speculation that Donovan and the Bills would go their own ways following the 2025-26 NBA season.

Donovan announced the news in a lengthy statement on social media. The Bulls confirmed the news shortly after.

Now, the Bulls will have to turn their attention toward finding a new head coach.

“After a series of thoughtful and extensive discussions with ownership regarding the future of the organization, I have decided to step away as the head coach of the Chicago Bulls, to allow the search process to unfold,” Donovan said in a statement. “I believe it is in the best interest of the Bulls, to allow the new leader to build out the staff as they see fit.

“My gratitude for this community and this organization is permanent. Thank you Jerry and Michael for giving me this opportunity and more importantly, for the relationship that has been forged. I was so blessed to be able to work with such great owners. I owe so much to my players and staff over the last six years. You all have worked side by side with me, day in and day out to drive the Bulls organization forward. And a huge thank you to Bulls fans, your energy, passion and unwavering support provided a home-court advantage that is generally unmatched around the league.”

Donovan first made the move to the NBA coaching ranks after leading the Florida Gators to back-to-back national championships in 2006 and 2007, and reaching four Final Fours (2000, 2006, 2007, and 2014). He then took over the Oklahoma City Thunder before joining the Bulls in 2020.

During his time leading Chicago, Donovan amassed a 226-256 record, going just 1-4 in the playoffs. It will be interesting to see what direction the Bulls turn next.
