18 Sports Flashback – 1976 Horseheads softball team

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – It’s time to go back to the vault with 18 Sports Flashback.

On this edition, we travel back to the first season of Horseheads softball in 1976. That year, Hall of Fame coach Warren Conklin started his career for the Blue Raider program before retiring and setting milestones on a 34-year-run ending in 2010.

Under Conklin, Horseheads won three New York State Championships in 1991, 1993 and 1996. Conklin amassed 570 career wins, which is currently fourth all-time in New York State history, it was a then-state record upon his retirement.

The New York State Softball Hall of Famer and Chemung County Sports Hall of Famer, coached and guided countless future NCAA D-I, D-II and D-III players and eventual coaches. Go back to 50 years ago with this photo on 18 Sports Flashback.
