England vs India: Match called off after Men in Blue's innings due to torrential rain in Durham

India, led by Shreyas Iyer, was hoping to steady their United Kingdom campaign when they opened their five-match T20I series against England on Wednesday, July 1, at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street.

India's early days under their new captain didn't go as planned, with the side suffering a 0-2 series defeat to Ireland. This was their first T20I series loss since 2023 and, remarkably, their first-ever international series defeat to Ireland in any format.

What stood out most from the Ireland series wasn't simply the scoreline, but how visibly uncomfortable India's batting unit looked whenever the ball offered movement or extra bounce.

With England likely to present similar challenges, backed by a more experienced and varied bowling attack, India's batters needed to show far greater awareness of tempo and smarter shot selection.

India posted 189 runs in 20 overs after losing two early wickets but England never came out to bat due to torrential downpour.

Match called off in Durham due to rain.

It continues to rain in Durham as the covers are still on. The cut-off time for a five-over match is 1:25 a.m. (IST)/3:55 p.m. (local time). England will need to chase 64 runs if the match is reduced to five overs.

A slight delay as it's raining in Durham. Players are still in the pavilion, waiting for the rain to subside.

After 20 overs, India 189/7

India stage a comeback after the initial setback as they post a fighting total on the board, courtesy of half-centuries from Abhishek Sharma and captain Shreyas Iyer.

After 11 overs, India 105/3

Big wicket for England as Abhishek departs. But are on course to post a competitive total.

After 6 overs, India 61/2

Abhishek Sharma is in great touch right from the word go but India lose two quick wickets. Sanju Samson's misfortune continues.

Toss: India won the toss and opted to field first.
