Ken Carman Dismisses Concerns Over Todd Monken’s Relationship With Deion Sanders

Questions surrounding Deion Sanders’ planned meeting with Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken have sparked plenty of debate over the past few weeks, while some critics see the move as a father becoming too involved in his son’s NFL career, others view it as a routine football conversation between two experienced coaches.

The Brown media personality falls firmly into the latter group. Speaking recently on “92.3 The Fan”, sports radio host Ken Carman pushed back on the criticism and argued that the discussion has been framed the wrong way from the start.

Carman made it clear that he sees nothing unusual about Sanders wanting to share insight on Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders. During “The Ken Carman Show with Anthony Lima”, he argued that college coaches regularly communicate with NFL staffs about players they have coached, especially QBs transitioning to the professional level.

“I know Deion Sanders is a major celebrity. His son is a major celebrity… It doesn’t mean he can’t talk to Todd Monken. Guys who are college coaches talk to NFL coaches about QBs and all the other positions all the time.”

The discussion stems from comments Sanders made on his YouTube show, The Barbershop, where he revealed his intention to meet Monken and discuss the best ways to coach Shedeur. Sanders explained that his perspective comes from years of working with the QB throughout high school and college, giving him firsthand knowledge of what helps him perform at his best.

That proposal immediately generated mixed reactions. Some observers questioned whether an NFL coaching staff should seek guidance from a player’s father. However, Carman believes that argument overlooks a key detail. In his view, Monken would not simply be speaking with a parent. He would be talking to a Power Four head coach and a Pro Football Hall of Famer with extensive experience developing the player in question.

Monken’s own comments suggest he shares a similar outlook. Speaking after the Browns’ OTA practice on June 3, the head coach mentioned how he looks forward to meeting Sanders when their schedules mesh. He also praised Deion and Shedeur, highlighting the respect he holds for their achievements and work ethic.

Initially, the meeting was set for May, but scheduling issues pushed it back. Still, nobody’s hinting that the talk’s off.

Carman says the recent controversy didn’t make sense. He thinks football’s all about building relationships and sharing info. This goes on between college coaches, NFL folks, scouts, and former players. With Deion’s coaching background and his history with Shedeur, Carman feels Monken should jump at the chance to hear whatever might benefit the team and young QB.
