Samsung One UI 9 Beta: Why it’s different this year – Release Date and Eligible devices

17 May 2026 at 06:25

Samsung has already started the One UI 9 Beta program for the latest Galaxy S-series flagship device. The first build was released around May 13, 2026, for the Galaxy S26 series, including the S26 Ultra, and some testers have installed it in eligible regions.

Samsung’s One UI 9 development is moving fast because Google’s Android 17 Beta program has been rolling since February 2026, with platform stability reached by late March.

Now the big question is when we will get our hands on the early One UI 9 features. Let’s talk about it.

Here’s the expected release date based on Samsung’s recent patterns and leaks:

  • Public One UI 9 Beta: May 2026.
  • Stable One UI 9 rollout: Mid-2026, probably July 2026 alongside the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Z Flip 8, and rumored Z Fold Wide. New foldables usually ship with the latest One UI out of the box.
  • Rollout to other devices: Starts with other flagships (S25/S24 series) in August/September, then mid-rangers and tablets later in 2026.

This is faster than some past One UI rollouts because Samsung has been accelerating its update schedule.

The official One UI Beta Program is available through the Samsung Members app. The beta program is currently open in these countries: US, UK, Germany, South Korea, and (Poland and India – May 26). If you are living in any of these countries, you will be eligible as soon as the One UI 9 registration banner appears in Samsung Members.

Easy steps (same as past betas):
1. Open Samsung Members app, log in with your Samsung account.
2. Look for the “Notice / Banner / Beta card” or “Registration for One UI Beta Program”.
3. Submit your device info (it must be a supported model on the latest stable or beta firmware).
4. If selected, you will get an OTA beta build (sometimes multiple waves).

Important: You can unenroll and return to stable, but expect bugs, battery drain, and possible data wipes in early builds.

Samsung One UI 9 Eligible Devices: (Tentative List)

Samsung hasn’t published an official list yet (It usually does right after beta is completed), but eligibility follows its 4–7 year major OS update promise. Devices that received One UI 8/8.5 are almost certain to get One UI 9 unless already hit the eligibility limit.

What’s new in One UI 9 (From leaks & early builds)

One UI 8.5 already brought some visual refresh (glassy effects, new icons, etc.), so you can expect more polishing, refinements, and deeper Android 17 integration rather than a total redesign in One UI 9. The official changelog is relatively short, but real-world testing and hidden changes reveal more visual and functional improvements.

UI and Design Improvements (Beta 1 Confirmed)

  • Thicker, more tactile brightness & volume sliders in the Quick Panel. You can now independently resize the brightness slider, volume slider, and media player widget. Sound Mode and Display Mode toggles can be separated from the sliders for a cleaner layout.
  • Enhanced lock-screen media player, colorful waveform animations on the progress bar, more 3D/bouncy effects, glowing elements, and refined expanded view (noticeably improved over One UI 8.5).
  • More refined Quick Panel overall, increased blur/translucency, modernized tiles, and greater flexibility in editing (builds on One UI 8.5 glassy design).
  • Subtle system-wide refinements, smoother animations/transitions, refined spacing, and slight Material You Expressive influences (more consistent blur and depth).
  • Gallery app, cleaner multi-image selection with improved blur/preview effects.
  • About Phone/Settings sections minor redesigns for better readability.

New Samsung Features & App Updates

  • Samsung Notes: New Tape feature (cover parts of notes with decorative tape that can be peeled to reveal content). A wider variety of pen line styles for drawing/writing.
  • Contacts app: Direct integration with Creative Studio AI for easy personalized profile card creation without switching apps.
  • Game Booster: More in-panel settings (e.g., screen resolution, screenshot format, in-game panel position) without leaving the game.
  • Tap to Share (NFC-based quick sharing for files/photos/contacts/locations) with glow animation: Expected/rumored but not heavily highlighted in Beta 1 yet.
  • Bixby widgets on home screen (voice/mic + keyboard options): Limited rollout in early beta.
  • Warranty & Care hub: Centralized warranty info, diagnostics, repair options, and device-linked assistance (expanding in beta).

Android 17 + Galaxy AI Enhancements in Beta 1

  • Location access transparency: Blue indicator in status bar/Quick Panel when apps access location. Redesigned precise vs. approximate permission pop-up.
  • Improved Galaxy AI: Proactive suggestions, enhanced Photo Assist with AI “pills” in editor, and early Agentic AI capabilities. More refinements expected in later betas.

Accessibility upgrades

  • Text Spotlight: Tap text to enlarge/highlight in a floating window (customizable font, colors).
  • Select to Speak: Quick audio readout for selected items without full TalkBack.
  • Improved TalkBack (unified with Google, Play Store updates).
  • Enhanced mouse keys (speed, acceleration, numpad support) and physical keyboard shortcuts.
  • “Replace swipe with single tap” moved for easier access.

Expected Android 17 Features (Partially in Beta 1 / Coming Soon)

  • Floating app bubbles/windows (better multitasking, especially on foldables/tablets).
  • Granular Notification Rules and per-app dark theme.
  • Advanced privacy controls and selective contacts picker.
  • Satellite connectivity improvements + UWB enhancements.
  • Gaming optimizations, 14-bit RAW camera support, and adaptive apps.

The One UI 9 Beta 1 feels smoother overall due to Android 17 under-the-hood improvements, but it’s not revolutionary, expect bigger additions in Beta 2+.

This is still an early beta (May 2026 security patch). More features will likely appear as the program progresses. Use on a secondary device, as bugs can occur.

If you have a supported device in an eligible region, you can test it right now.
