McAlester quarterback club hosting first ever Buffalo Stampede 5k

The Buffalo Stampede 5k will rumble into downtown McAlester May 30.

This will mark the first year the McAlester quarterback club hosts the event. In years past, the club’s annual fundraiser was a golf tournament but this year they wanted to change things up. Proceeds from the fundraiser will go directly to the team to supply team meals, equipment, travel and other essentials throughout the season.

There will be two events, a fun run starting at 8 a.m. and the 5k at 8:30 a.m. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. in front of Spaceship Earth Coffee and the starting line for the races will be in front of Miller Glass.

In the end, they will hand out trophies to the top three male and female finishers in every five year age group up to 80 and older. Those interested in participating can pre-register for the event online until May 29 by visiting the McAlester Buffalo Football Facebook page or by contacting a booster club member like president Natalie Russell at 918-429-5929.

Pre-registration cost for the fun run is $25 and $30 for the 5k. Race day registration cost for the fun run is $30 and $40 for the 5k.

β€œEvery contribution, big or small, makes a difference for these student athletes,” Russell said.

For the quarterback club, getting the funds necessary to assist the players in their success is the ultimate goal of the run.

β€œHigh school football is bigger than just a game,” Russell said. β€œIt brings the community together and teaches our kids discipline, teamwork and pride and we would love to see our community show up and support these athletes in their endeavors, to help them succeed not only on the field but off the field as well.”

Russell said if people can’t make it to the Buffalo Stampede, she hopes to see them at a game this fall.

β€œIf they can’t support financially, we would just love to see them in the stands on Friday nights, supporting our Buffaloes and ultimately that’s what makes the big difference to our McAlester quarterback club,” Russell said.
