Sunday’s Round of 16 action in the 2026 FIFA World Cup hit a snag ahead of the highly anticipated Mexico vs. England showdown. Due to inclement weather in the area and lightning storms, kick off has been delayed.

The game was originally set to begin at 8:00 p.m. ET on FOX.

However, due to the storms and threats of lightning in the area, the match’s start time has been delayed by one hour and kick off is now set for 9:00 p.m. ET at the earliest.

In the days leading up to Sunday’s match, there had been conversations about moving the start time up by six hours due to severe weather. Kick off would have been scheduled for 2:00 p.m. ET.

Instead, the Mexican Football Federation and the English FA pushed back at any change to the start time, and FIFA moved forward with the scheduled kickoff in primetime.

El Tri will look to continue its dominance at Estadio Azteca, while England is searching for redemption in its first return to the venue since the infamous “Hand of God” goal.

Following the Round of 16, the quarterfinals will take place from July 9 through July 11, with the semifinals set for July 15 and July 15. The World Cup Final will be held on Sunday, July 19, at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
