World Cup 2026: Belgium granted appeal after FIFA reversed USMNT's Folarin Balogun one-game ban after red card

The USMNT received seemingly good news Sunday, when FIFA reversed Folarin Balogun’s one-game suspension after he received a red card during the team’s match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. But that decision could be temporary.

Belgium was granted an appeal by FIFA over the decision, which may be heard just hours before the USMNT and Belgium square off in the Round of 16 on Monday, according to The Athletic.

With the appeal granted, both U.S. Soccer and the Belgian federation were asked to send in submissions to FIFA by 5 a.m. PT. That decision has reportedly frustrated Belgium, per The Athletic, as FIFA did not make its Balogun decision public.

Once those submissions are in, a member of the FIFA appeals committee will hear the case. The member of the FIFA appeals committee selected to hear the case will not be someone associated with FIFA, UEFA or CONCACAF, per The Athletic.

Though the submission deadline was aggressive, FIFA has not guaranteed a ruling will be made prior to Monday’s game, per The Athletic.

The decision by FIFA to overturn Balogun’s one-game suspension was met with plenty of controversy. In addition to a disciplinary reversal being a rare occurrence in the World Cup, the fact that the United States is one of the host countries of the event — and that U.S. President Donald Trump reportedly got involved — led to questions about FIFA’s loyalties.

In response to the decision to overturn Balogun’s one-game ban, UEFA issued a scathing response, saying it could not believe “such an unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable decision.”

A portion of UEFA’s statement read:

“Football, like any other sports, relies on rules, which are the basis for fair, honest and transparent competition. Sometimes rules are open to interpretation. In this case not. A minimum automatic suspension of one match following a red card is not a discretionary option and does not require the decision of a competent body to be enacted. It is a principle embedded in regulations, which cannot be made subject to exceptions, let alone in the middle of a tournament where several other players have been in the same situation and regularly served their suspension.

“When the certainty of rules is no longer guaranteed by its guardians, the integrity of the game is at stake and the credibility of a competition is undermined.”

Former FIFA president Sepp Blatter also took the organization to task, saying the game “must never become a playground for political power.”

Red cards are not overturned by political phone calls. They are overturned by rules, evidence and independent bodies. If a U.S. President intervenes with the FIFA President — and a player is suddenly cleared before a World Cup knockout match — the question is unavoidable: Quo…

Blatter was ousted from his position due to a corruption scandal and remains suspended from taking part in FIFA activities until 2027.

Wimbledon 2026: Coco Gauff overcomes tough third-round match vs. Claire Liu to advance

Coco Gauff hasn't had the easiest time at Wimbledon during her career. During Friday's third-round match against Claire Liu, it looked like Gauff could once again suffer an early defeat at the Grand Slam.

But Gauff managed to rally after dropping a set to Liu, pulling out the victory (6-3, 6-7, 6-2) and moving on to the fourth round at Wimbledon.

Things started well for Gauff, who cruised through the first set, winning it 6-3. But Liu offered resistance in the second set, eventually forcing a tiebreak. The tiebreak was close, but a double fault by Gauff led to Liu taking the tiebreak and the set.

That resulted in the two going to a third and final set.

Gauff seemed to settle in after her struggles in the tiebreak, taking the first two games of the third set to snag an early lead. Liu battled back, however, taking the third game. The pair traded the next two games, keeping things close. Determined to not let things get too tight, Gauff picked up wins in the next two games, putting her just one game away from the victory.

Leading 5-2 in the final set, Gauff was able to close it out. With the win, she advances to the fourth round at Wimbledon for the fourth time in her career.

Of all the Grand Slams, Wimbledon has proved the most difficult for Gauff. The 24-year-old has now reached the fourth round at the event four times. In her three previous appearances, she failed to advance past the round.

After winning the U.S. Open in 2023 and the French Open in 2025, Gauff only needs to win Wimbledon and the Australian Open to complete her Grand Slam. Until this year, she's come closer at the Australian Open, reaching the semifinals back in 2024. She'll look to match — or best — that performance if she can keep up her winning ways at Wimbledon.

For Liu, Friday's third-round appearance at Wimbledon marked the furthest she's ever progressed at a Grand Slam. The 26-year-old had made 19 Grand Slam appearances prior to Wimbledon this year, but never advanced past the second round at any of them. She fought valiantly to continue that run Friday, pushing Gauff to a third set before ultimately falling.

With the win, Gauff will take on Belinda Bencic in the fourth round Sunday. By seeding, the match should be close, as No. 7 Gauff is just a slight favorite over the No. 11 Bencic.

But it might not be as close as it looks on paper. The pair have met seven times in their careers, with Gauff holding a 5-2 record over Bencic.

Wimbledon 2026: Tommy Paul upset in third-round match vs. Hubert Hurkacz

After a quarterfinals showing at Wimbledon in 2024, Tommy Paul looked like he could finally be coming into his own as a player. But his past two trips to the event have ended in disappointment.

Paul was sent packing from Wimbledon earlier than expected Friday, losing to Hubert Hurkacz in four sets (4-6, 7-6, 7-5, 6-2).

It was a sloppy match for Paul, who was charged with six double faults. On top of that, Hurkacz had his serve working well, as he racked up 20 aces in the victory.

It was a disappointing result for the American, who had previously fared well at Wimbledon. Of the four Grand Slam events, Paul’s 71 percent win rate at Wimbledon was second-highest, narrowly edging out his 72 percent win rate at the Australian Open. That gap will only get larger following Paul’s loss Friday.

Though Paul has shown flashes of success, he’s yet to win a single Grand Slam. The closest he’s come is the semifinals, which he reached at the Australian Open in 2023. Paul has three quarterfinal appearances in Grand Slams under his belt, his last of which came at the 2025 French Open.
