Scenic Autumn Foliage Spots at Mt. Gozaisho

1. View from the ropeway window

Autumn foliage at Mt. Gozaisho appears from late October to mid-November. The area from Ropeway Sanjo Park Station to mid-mountain is highly recommended. In late October, the leaves on the rock faces near Sanjo Park Station are spectacular, and by November, the valley around Tower No. 6 transforms into a breathtaking, woodblock-print-like scene.

However, it will be very crowded during this period, so we recommend going on a weekday. Also, if you use public transportation on weekends and holidays, you will not have to wait in line in traffic jams, so we recommend using trains and buses during this period.

2. The crimson-colored mountain park

Around October 20th every year, the azalea leaves at Summit Park reach their peak of autumn color. The mountaintop is particularly home to a large number of plants of the Ericaceae family, including red azaleas, white azaleas, and Enkianthus campanulata, and when the azalea leaves turn red in autumn, the world becomes a deep crimson red. The autumn color phenomenon occurs when the daytime temperature is low and the nights drop suddenly, causing the production of anthocyanin pigments, which turn the leaves a vibrant red. Because the temperature is lower at the top of the mountain than at the base, the leaves can be seen turning autumn earlier.

3. Take a leisurely stroll through the autumn leaves on a sightseeing lift

Beautiful azalea colonies line the sightseeing lift, allowing you to enjoy autumn foliage during the ride. The lift connects Ropeway Sanjo Park Station to the summit of Mt. Gozaisho, covering 500 m in about 8 minutes. One-way fares are 400 yen, and round-trip fares are 700 yen, with the same price for adults and children aged 4 and over. The lift consists of single-seater cabins.

*For safety reasons, please refrain from carrying children on board.

Yunoyama Onsen, located at the foot of the Gozaisho Ropeway, turns into a fantastical world in late November as the maple trees along the clear stream turn beautiful colors.
