Macao and Japan strengthen tourism links as travel agents explore new partnership opportunities

The Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) has taken another proactive step in reinforcing its connections with Japan’s travel industry by welcoming a delegation of nearly 30 travel agents from Tokyo and Osaka for a familiarization visit from October 29 to November 1. The initiative aimed to deepen understanding of Macao’s evolving “tourism +” offerings, strengthen partnerships with local tourism enterprises, and inspire new travel products designed for Japan’s diverse market segments.
This visit, organized in collaboration with the Japan Association of Travel Agents (JATA), featured representatives from Japanese travel agencies and Air Macau’s Japan office. The program combined business networking with immersive destination experiences, reflecting Macao’s growing efforts to position itself as a versatile, culture-rich destination for Japanese travelers seeking dynamic and experiential itineraries.
Strengthening Cross-Market Partnerships
Central to the visit was the Macao-Japan Travel Mart, held on October 31 at the Grand Lisboa Palace Resort Macau. The event provided a platform for direct engagement between the Japanese delegation and more than 40 representatives from Macao’s travel sector, including hotels, integrated resorts, event venues, and transportation operators. Both sides explored new business opportunities and strategies to cater to evolving traveler preferences, from leisure and business tourism to niche markets like culinary and educational travel.
The travel mart reflected MGTO’s strategy of fostering face-to-face connections between tourism stakeholders to create fresh travel products that highlight Macao’s unique blend of heritage, entertainment, and modernity. With daily direct flights between Macao and Tokyo and Osaka, the initiative underscored the strong potential for continued tourism growth between the two destinations.
Immersive Experiences to Inspire New Products
Beyond business meetings, the Japanese travel agents experienced a series of destination highlights that showcased Macao’s multidimensional charm. Their itinerary included guided tours through the Historic Centre of Macao, Taipa Village, and Coloane Village, where they discovered the city’s fusion of Portuguese and Chinese heritage. The group also visited hotels, integrated resorts, and key development zones in the NAPE and ZAPE districts to understand ongoing urban transformation projects aimed at enhancing Macao’s visitor appeal.
To offer a taste of Macao’s vibrant entertainment and dining scene, the delegation attended live residency shows, joined open-top night bus tours, and sampled Macanese cuisine during a lunch hosted at the iconic Taipa Houses. They also participated in a creative workshop to craft Macao-themed souvenirs, reinforcing the “tourism + culture + creativity” concept that defines the city’s evolving visitor experience.
These firsthand experiences were designed to help Japanese agents develop new, tailored travel packages for different segments—such as female travelers, youth groups, and school excursions—that align with Japan’s changing tourism preferences.
Expanding Presence in Japan through Targeted Promotions
Japan remains one of Macao’s top ten visitor source markets, and MGTO has been consistently investing in strengthening brand presence and traveler engagement across the country. Earlier this year, MGTO led a Macao travel trade delegation to the Tourism Expo Japan 2025, where it launched the specialized guidebook “Journey to Experience Macao: Family Fun in Macao”, highlighting family-oriented itineraries and interactive attractions.
In April, MGTO staged a large-scale tourism promotion event in Tokyo that creatively integrated anime culture, connecting with younger Japanese travelers and promoting Macao’s entertainment-driven experiences. These efforts form part of the city’s broader marketing strategy to engage multiple generations of travelers through diverse storytelling, digital outreach, and experiential tourism campaigns.
Continuing the Path of Innovation and Collaboration
Through initiatives like the familiarization tour and trade mart, MGTO continues to build bridges between Macao and Japan’s travel sectors. The ongoing exchange of knowledge, creativity, and business collaboration reinforces Macao’s reputation as a dynamic destination that merges heritage with innovation.
By combining “tourism + culture + business” in its promotional strategy, Macao aims not only to increase visitor arrivals from Japan but also to cultivate deeper cultural connections and long-term partnerships that support mutual tourism growth. With strengthened airline connectivity, unique product development, and strategic marketing, Macao is well-positioned to remain a preferred destination for Japanese travelers seeking meaningful and multi-dimensional experiences in Asia.
