Somon Air Expands Fleet with Historic Boeing Order, Adding 787 Dreamliners and 737 MAX for International Growth

Tajikistan’s national airline, Somon Air, has made a groundbreaking decision in its fleet expansion strategy, committing to place its largest-ever aircraft order with Boeing. The airline will acquire up to 14 cutting-edge airplanes, including a selection of fuel-efficient 787 Dreamliner widebodies and the single-aisle 737 MAX jets. This announcement marks a pivotal moment for the airline, further solidifying its role in regional and international air travel.
Currently, Somon Air operates a fleet of six Next-Generation 737 aircraft, connecting Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, to 25 destinations across Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. This new deal represents a substantial leap for the airline, with plans to modernize its operations and broaden its service offerings. The agreement includes the purchase of up to four Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, which will facilitate Somon Air’s expansion into new long-haul, intercontinental routes. Additionally, the airline will acquire up to 10 Boeing 737-8 MAX jets to enhance its existing short and medium-haul network.
The Boeing 787-9, a part of the Dreamliner family, will allow Somon Air to significantly improve the comfort and experience of its passengers, particularly on international flights. These state-of-the-art widebody jets are renowned for their fuel efficiency and passenger-friendly features, offering greater range and environmental sustainability. By incorporating the 787-9 into its fleet, Somon Air aims to offer superior service on long-haul routes, including direct flights from Dushanbe to major international cities.
The 737-8 MAX jets, on the other hand, will play a critical role in modernizing Somon Air’s regional and domestic operations. These fuel-efficient single-aisle aircraft will provide a significant reduction in operating costs, including fuel and maintenance, improving the airline’s overall efficiency. The 737 MAX is widely regarded for its innovative technology, delivering up to a 20-25% improvement in fuel efficiency compared to previous models. This upgrade aligns with Somon Air’s commitment to reducing its environmental footprint and keeping pace with the latest advancements in aviation technology.
This historic deal was formalized during the C5+1 Summit, an important diplomatic event marking the 10th anniversary of the U.S.-Central Asia partnership. The order, once finalized and posted to Boeing’s Orders & Deliveries website, will have a significant impact on the U.S. economy, supporting over 11,000 jobs across the nation. It reflects a strong collaboration between Tajikistan and the United States, with Boeing playing a pivotal role in enhancing the airline’s operations.
Somon Air’s new fleet expansion will undoubtedly make a substantial impact on the airline’s ability to compete in an increasingly globalized aviation market. The 787 Dreamliner has already opened up more than 520 new nonstop routes worldwide, carrying over 1 billion passengers since its commercial introduction in 2011. This new order further strengthens the position of Boeing’s aircraft in global air travel, solidifying its reputation as a leader in aircraft manufacturing.
Founded in 2008, Somon Air has been the flag carrier of Tajikistan, with its headquarters at Dushanbe International Airport. The airline has consistently focused on delivering high-quality service to its passengers, maintaining a fleet of modern aircraft that meets the highest standards of safety and efficiency. Its future growth plans, powered by the addition of Boeing’s most advanced models, will allow the airline to continue its expansion and play a key role in the region’s aviation landscape.
Boeing, a global aerospace leader, continues to advance innovation and sustainability in the aviation industry. As a top U.S. exporter, the company develops and manufactures commercial airplanes, defense systems, and space technology for customers worldwide. Boeing’s commitment to innovation, economic development, and environmental responsibility is evident in its continuous efforts to deliver aircraft that meet the evolving needs of both airlines and passengers.
With the inclusion of the 787 Dreamliner and 737 MAX in its fleet, Somon Air is set to revolutionize air travel in Tajikistan and beyond, offering a brighter and more sustainable future for the airline and its passengers.
