Norfolkβs Keyshawn Davis will end break from boxing in January at Madison Square Garden
Norfolkβs Keyshawn Davis will return to the boxing ring next month at Madison Square Garden β his first fight since a hometown title bout unraveled at Scope and spurred Davis to announce a break from the sport.
Davis will fight former world title challenger Jamaine Ortiz at MSG on Jan. 31 in a 12-round junior welterweight match. Davis (13-0 with nine knockouts), was stripped of his World Boxing Organization lightweight championship belt June 7 after his missed weight for his scheduled match at Scope against Edwin De Los Santos.
The next day, the card that included Davisβ two brothers went on without Davis, but it was marred by a post-fight scuffle involving Keyshawn and Keon Davis after Kelvin Davisβ first professional loss.
Two months later, Davis announced he was taking a break from boxing and apologized to his hometown.
βI hate what happened, but what happened is going to change me,β Davis, 26, said during an August interview on βThe Ariel Helwani Show.β
βTo Norfolk, to my town, like, yβall know how much I love yβall,β Davis said. βYβall know how much I put yβall on a pedestal, so for me to act out that way β¦ on the same week that the state and the city gave me an award. β¦ I was wrong. β¦ In terms of Norfolk, I apologize for putting us on that pedestal and making us look so (expletive) bad.β
Ortiz (20-2-1, 10 KOs) has won three straight fights since losing a decision to Teofimo Lopez for the WBO junior welterweight world title. The Davis-Ortiz bout is part of the undercard of a main event between Teofimo Lopez and Shakur Stevenson.
Davis, a silver medalist at the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo, became the WBO lightweight world champion with a knockout of Denys Berinchyk on Feb. 14.
This is a developing story.
