Colombia–Venezuela Air Travel Breakthrough With Avianca Resuming Daily Bogotá–Caracas Flights After Suspension: What New Updates You Need to Know

Starting on 12 February 2026, Avianca will begin once again offering daily, nonstop flights between Bogotá, Colombia, and Caracas, Venezuela, making Avianca the first airline to bring back the Colombia-Venezuela air link that was disrupted throughout 2025. This reestablished link between the capitals of the two countries will demonstrate the continuing normalization of Venezuela and Colombia commercial air travel after a lengthy period of reduced operations due to safety and airspace concerns.

With the daily flights, Bogotá and Caracas will once again have daily flights in both directions. The scheduled flights will provide additional travel options for passengers. Both countries have adequate regional airport infrastructure to support the increased frequency of the flights. This will be especially valuable for passengers who want to travel to/from the Caracas to Bogotá flights and travel to/from the flights to/from other countries in and outside the region.

Restoration of a Major Air Link After Suspension

Once again operating nonstop daily flights between Bogotá and Caracas will also be the first time since the Colombia-Venezuela air link was closed, and Avianca was the first airline to bring back the Colombia-Venezuela air link since it was closed throughout 2025. This will be the first time balloons have taken place in Colombia-Venezuela air travel since air travel began in Venezuela. This will also be the first time service will return to Caracas after the two European scheduled air carriers that operated services into Caracas suspended services on account of increased operating complexities.

On November 29, 2025, due to the constructed safety zones in and around the Venezuelan Airspace, Avianca, along with other scheduled service carriers, ceased all service to the Republic of Venezuela.

Venezuela’s National Institute of Civil Aviation (INAC) responded by revoking operating licenses of certain carriers after those suspensions.

This scenario highlights the airlines’ specific operational context as they re-evaluated their scheduling and routing priorities. The resumption of flights, therefore, reflects a more positive and responsive operational collaboration within the stream of civil aviation services, especially the Colombian Civil Aviation Authority (Aerocivil) and airline services, aimed at establishing and sustaining the reliability of the connectivity for passengers to fly between the two capitals.

The Previous Limitation of Cross-Border Aviation Services

The reopening of the cross-border services, particularly the Bogotá-Caracas route, has been, and will continue to be, a major contributor to further enhancing the level of cross-border aviation services in Latin America, especially within the scope of the increasing demand for air travel. El Dorado International Airport in Bogotá is also one of the major airports in the region, providing a wide range of passengers over the Caribbean, Central, and South America. The daily direct flights between the two capital cities will further facilitate business, family, and leisure travel.

Numerous travel specialists and route developers have pointed to the strengthening of air service as a way to improve the bilateral cross-border relations between the two nations and, particularly, the gradual re-closure of Venezuela’s commercial airspace and the return of foreign air carriers.

Weekly flights for this route will create more seamless travel for border crossers and those connecting to additional flights through Bogotá’s highly integrated airport network.

Strategic Importance for Tourism and Binational Movement

For tourism, trade, and the economic relationship between Colombia and Venezuela, the restoring of this air link is of utmost importance. Bogotá–Caracas was, before the disruptions, one of the most important north-south air travel connections for the Bogotá–Caracas corridor.

Analysts say the scheduling of daily flights is expected to promote tourism between the two countries, and will provide more options for travel to/from Bogotá and Caracas, including the ability to plan a trip at short notice, along with arrangements for cultural, historical, and family reunification travel. Cross-border commerce has been facilitated with the direct flights, and is expected to grow further with the flights being scheduled for daily operations.

Flight Safety and Operational Considerations

Avianca and the respective civil aviation authorities have worked to address the applicable safety standards and regulations, and have worked to address the international safety standards and the local standards to define the operational safety parameters, and determine the appropriate civil aviation regulations to define the operational parameters.

The decision to re-establish service was influenced by the carrier’s relationship in the region and its presence in Venezuela for more than six decades.
