Super Bowl fans spotted walking on highway to escape traffic nightmare

Even with kickoff still hours away, the traffic on the way to the Super Bowl is forcing some people to abandon their rideshares and walk on the freeway to get to Levi's Stadium.

In a video shared by the San Francisco Chronicle, 10 people in three different groups are seen walking along the side of Highway 237, the freeway closest to the Santa Clara stadium. (The Chronicle and SFGATE are both owned by Hearst but have separate newsrooms.) The Chronicle said the fans were walking in around 11:30 a.m., a full four hours before the game between the Patriots and Seahawks is set to begin.

A big reason for the lengthy delays is that many of the roads closest to Levi's Stadium are shut down, with only police escorts for the teams and approved buses allowed in. For any people trying to drive to the game, the NFL also took over most of the main parking lots at Levi's Stadium, forcing people to find parking elsewhere.

It's also led to some astronomical price points, too. Multiple social media posts show a parking lot on Patrick Henry Drive that's roughly three-quarters of a mile west of the stadium charging $400 to park there. If you drove an oversized vehicle, that'll be an extra $20 on top of that.

Santa Clara County also tried to get in on the parking action, even if their county parking lot is a little over a mile away. The county posted on X that it was selling parking spaces at their site for $125, offering people three routes to reach Levi's Stadium from there.

Others may find some good money off of the far-flung parkers, too. A reporter for the California Post spotted a person with a pedicab who said he was charging $100 per person to get a ride closer to the stadium. Some folks who live near the stadium told SFGATE they were considering selling their parking garage spot for the game.

It's all fitting for one of the most expensive tickets in all of sports. The cheapest tickets available on resale markets dipped down earlier in the weekend, with SFGATE seeing tickets below $3,200 on Friday evening. But as of 1 p.m. on Sunday, those tickets seem to be getting snapped up, with the cheapest available now costing $3,632.
