Destiny Howell made a 3-pointer and, after Brynn McGaughy hit two free throws on the other end, was fouled as she hit another and the and-1 free throw gave the Badgers a one-point lead with 1:09 to play. Avery Howell answered with a putback off a miss by McGaughy that made it 87-86 with 43 seconds left.

Wisconsin (13-11, 5-8), which has lost four straight, went 0 for 3 from the field β€” all 3-point shots by Destiny Howell β€” from there.

The Badgers closed the third quarter with an 11-0 run and scored eight β€” all by Uchenna β€” of the first 11 in the fourth to take a six-point lead with 6:09 left in regulation. Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Legendary skier Lindsey Vonn on Sunday was airlifted off a mountain in Italy for the second time since she arrived for the Olympics after she broke her leg during a downhill race.

Vonn, who tore the ACL in her left knee a week-and-a-half ago during a qualifying run for the 2026 Winter Olympics, crashed and broke her leg Sunday, ending her attempt at a comeback to cap her storied career.

The 41-year-old three-time Olympic medalist had retired in 2019 but after undergoing partial knee replacement in April 2024 decided later that year to come out of retirement after testing the knee on the slopes.

"Lindsey Vonn sustained an injury, but is in stable condition and in good hands with a team of American and Italian physicians," the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Team posted on X after her injury.

Ahead of the race, Vonn, who has had replacements in both knees over the course of her career, said that she was wearing a brace on the left knee and was able to ski despite the torn ACL.

Her coach also noted ahead of Sunday's race that, during practice runs to test the knee, Vonn was not favoring it and appeared to be ready to go.

Sunday's crash was not caused by the torn ACL, but instead happened when she hooked a gate on the course with her arm, spinning off balance and shifting her weight, which caused her to fall and then tumble into the snow, USA Today reported.

After the crash and tumble down the slope, a helicopter could be heard coming to get her, The New York Times reported, as the race paused for about 20 minutes.

"That definitely was the last thing we wanted to see," Karin Kildow, Vonn's sister, said in an interview on NBC. "It happened quick. When that happens, you're just immediately hoping she's OK."

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) β€” Nyla Brooks scored 21 points, Nyla Harris added 19 and No. 25 North Carolina rolled past Wake Forest 84-56 on Sunday.

North Carolina (20-5, 9-3 ACC) has won seven straight and reached 20 wins for the 34th time in program history.

Wake Forest led 9-6 through the first five minutes before North Carolina hit four 3-pointers β€” two each from Brooks and Lanie Grant β€” in a 16-0 run. The Tar Heels led 22-11 heading to the second quarter. Two more 3s from Brooks helped push the lead to 14 points before the Tar Heels settled for a 39-29 advantage at halftime.

Harris scored 11 points in the third quarter and the Tar Heels extended their lead to 65-42 entering the fourth. Carolina's lead first reached 30 points at 78-48 on a short jumper by Blanca Thomas with about 3 1/2 minutes to go.

Breezy Johnson wins Olympic downhill on day marred by American teammate Lindsey Vonn's crash

CORTINA D'AMPEZZO, Italy (AP) β€” American ski racer Breezy Johnson won the Olympic downhill Sunday with a hard-charging run on a day marred by teammate Lindsey Vonn’s crash that saw her being taken off the mountain in a helicopter.

Johnson was the sixth runner and found speed with a risk-taking trip along the iconic Olympia delle Tofana course on a sunny day in Cortina. She was in the leader’s box when Vonn, the No. 13 racer, cut a corner too close and was spun around before crashing. The race was put on hold for more than 20 minutes.

The 30-year-old Johnson joins Vonn as the only American women to win the Olympic downhill. Johnson finished in 1 minute, 36.10 seconds to hold off Emma Aicher of Germany by just .04 seconds. Italy’s Sofia Goggia, the 2018 Olympic downhill winner and 2022 silver medalist, finished with the bronze.

2-way player Daniss Jenkins scores 18 points as Pistons rout Knicks, 118-80

DETROIT (AP) β€” Daniss Jenkins scored 18 points in his last game as a two-way player and the Detroit Pistons routed New York 118-80 on Friday night to end the Knicks' winning streak at eight games.

Jenkins was playing his 42nd game of the season, meaning he is no longer eligible for NBA games under his two-way contract. The Pistons must convert his deal to a full NBA contract to keep him. He's averaging 8.2 points and 3.3 assists in 16.8 minutes as a backup guard.

Jalen Duren (knee) missed the game for Detroit while the Knicks played without Karl-Anthony Towns (eye) and OG Anunoby (toe).

Tobias Harris and Isaiah Stewart each scored 15 points for the Pistons. They have won five straight regular-season games against New York, but lost to the Knicks in six games in the first round of last season's playoffs.

Mikal Bridges scored 19 points for New York. Jalen Brunson finished with 12 on 4-for-20 shooting that included 0 for 8 on 3-pointers. New York's 80 points were a season low, beating the 90 they scored in a 31-point loss to the Pistons on Jan. 5.

Detroit, playing a night after an ugly loss to Washington, dominated the first half on their way to a 63-42 lead. The Pistons, normally one of the worst 3-point-shooting teams in the league, went 10 of 18 (55.6%) while the Knicks only made 5 of 19 (26.3%). Brunson was 2 for 13 from the floor in the half.

New York had time to make a run in the third quarter, but Brunson went 2 for 7 and the Knicks only scored 18 points. Jenkins and Harris each had seven points as Detroit moved the margin to 90-60.

Alabama's Charles Bediako preparing to play again while judge mulls decision in eligibility case

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) β€” An Alabama circuit judge didn't rule immediately following Charles Bediako's lawsuit hearing against the NCAA on Friday, clearing a path for the 7-footer to continue to play.

The Crimson Tide travel to rival Auburn on Saturday.

County Circuit Court Judge Daniel Pruet said he would have a ruling β€œsoon” but did not provide one by the end of the business day. Bediako is expected to keep playing under a temporary restraining order that allowed him to join Alabama in the middle of the season despite questions regarding his collegiate eligibility.

The 23-year-old Bediako is averaging 9.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in four outings. Alabama is 2-2 in those contests.

Attorneys for both sides β€” Bediako and the NCAA β€” argued their cases Friday. Bediako sued college basketball's sanctioning body in an effort to regain eligibility despite leaving Alabama for the NBA draft in 2023, signing a two-way NBA contract and playing the last three seasons in the developmental G League.

Bediako spent two seasons (2021-23) at Alabama, averaging 6.6 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.7 blocks, and helped the Crimson Tide make the NCAA Tournament twice. He wasn't selected in the 2023 draft, but he played for the Motor City Cruise in the NBA’s G League as recently as mid-January.

His lawyers argued that Bediako remains within his five-year college eligibility window. The NCAA denied Alabama’s initial petition, and NCAA President Charlie Baker and SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey have made it clear they are opposed to Bediako’s reinstatement.

Crimson Tide coach Nate Oats said Friday that, regardless of the outcome of the case, Bediako will be allowed to remain on scholarship and work toward a college degree.
