The summer signing from Crystal Palace has endured a tough start to life at the Emirates Stadium, and things went from bad to worse for him yesterday evening.

Eze was handed a rare opportunity to start for Arsenal against Brentford, but he was anonymous in the first half and ended up being hooked by Mikel Arteta at half time.

Peter Crouch thinks Arteta doesn’t fancy Eze, but Keown insisted he could still see the England international coming good once he learns his role better.

Speaking after the game, which finished in a 1-1 draw, Crouch described Eze as a “passenger” who failed to make the most of this chance to impress.

“I believe he hadn’t started in the last nine or something like that, so he got a start today and you think ‘right go and impress Unfortunately he just felt off the boil, he couldn’t get on the ball in the first half,” Crouch said on punditry duty with TNT Sports, as quoted by the Daily Mirror.

“He was a bit of a passenger, if I’m being honest, we called it half an hour in that he was going to come off because for some reason it feels at the moment he [Arteta] doesn’t fancy him.”

Keown admitted that Eze is lacking the qualities Martin Odegaard has at the moment, but still backed the 27-year-old to turn it around once he got used to those demands and details of the role.

“To say he doesn’t fancy him, I think it’s more a case the player doesn’t quite know understand the structure in the same way that Odegaard does,” Keown said.

“Odegaard knows exactly where to be when the opposition have the ball and then picking up those little spaces, little passes and building play. That’s something Odegaard does well and Eze hasn’t quite picked that up yet. It will come in time, I’m sure it will.”

Eberechi Eze’s poor form since joining Arsenal

Eze was a joy to watch during his time at Crystal Palace, and ended his time at the club on a real high as he scored the winner in last season’s FA Cup final against Manchester City.

It seemed inevitable that Eze would then earn a big move, but it just hasn’t worked out for him at Arsenal so far.

Despite that famous hat-trick in the 4-1 win over Tottenham earlier in the season, Eze has just five goals to his name for AFC, and none in his last 16 games.

This has led to Arteta leaving Eze on the bench a lot, and after such an anonymous display last night it might be some time before he’s trusted with a starting place again.

“It’s not easy” – Arteta opens up as Arsenal star continues to struggle

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has acknowledged that summer signing Eberechi Eze is finding it difficult to make an impact.

The attacking midfielder, who joined the club from Crystal Palace last summer in a big money move, has struggled to make an impact at Arsenal this season.

Since his hat-trick against Tottenham in the North London derby, the England international has failed to show his quality for Arteta’s side.

The 27-year-old has often found himself on the bench which shows that the manager does not have complete faith in his ability.

Even in Arsenal’s latest outing against Brentford, Eze was taken off at halftime and replaced with Martin Odegaard.

Mikel Arteta admits struggles for Eberechi Eze

Following the 1-1 draw against Brentford, which saw the Gunners lose two more points in the Premier League title race, Arteta said, as reported by Fabrizio Romano:

“It’s not easy when you move to a new club and when you play against a team that is like Brentford.

“The ball is a lot of times NOT on the floor and especially for creative players, it’s more difficult”.

Making the move from Palace to Arsenal has not been easy by any means for Eze.

At Palace, he was the star of the team and the focal point, everything went through him.

For Arsenal, he has a different role. He is one of the many players in the team who can make a difference, which means he sees less of the ball.

Eze’s stats at Arsenal this season

Eze is failing to make the desired impact

At times Arteta has tested him in the playmaker role, something he prefers, but even in that position, Eze has struggled to show his true game.

Against Brentford was the prime example. With Kai Havertz out injured and Odegaard on the bench, Eze could have taken a leadership role in the middle of the park but he was anonymous and did not have any impact on the game.

Five goals and four assists in the league are not bad numbers for a player who has been used in rotation but stats never tell the real story.

Eze has been underwhelming and it is clear to see that from his performances.

0 shots, 0 dribbles, 0 key passes: Arsenal star’s dream transfer is turning into a nightmare

When Eberechi Eze joined Arsenal in the summer it looked like a perfect fit – the former Crystal Palace playmaker had returned to his boyhood club, who in turn had signed just the kind of X-factor maverick that their attack was lacking.

Fast forward six months later and Eze’s Arsenal dream is turning into a nightmare. The England international hasn’t been starting a lot of games, and when he was finally named in Mikel Arteta’s first XI against Brentford last night, he lasted just 45 minutes before being hooked at half time.

Eze’s stats in that first half against Brentford were abysmal – 0 shots, 0 dribbles, and 0 key passes – a far cry from the entertainer we saw at Palace for so many years.

We have seen one moment of genuine magic from Eze as he scored a famous hat-trick in the North London Derby win over Tottenham back in November, but he has zero goals and just one assist in the 16 games since then.

It wasn’t meant to be like this, with Eze’s return to Arsenal after failing to make it in their academy as a youngster looking like turning into one of football’s great fairytales.

“I thought about coming back from the moment I understood other clubs and what it meant to become a pro. I’ve always thought: ‘Arsenal is where it’s at, that’s what I want to achieve, what I want to get to’,” Eze told Ian Wright in an interview with Arsenal’s official site shortly after joining.

The 27-year-old was full of emotion as he was greeted by the Emirates Stadium crowd on the day his signing was announced. It looked like a perfect fit, so why has it gone so badly wrong?

Explaining his decision to sub Eze at half time yesterday, Arteta was quoted by the Independent as saying: “I think we needed another kind of profile to generate many more problems for them around those areas.”

Discussing Eze’s struggles more generally, the Spanish tactician added: “It’s not easy when you move to a new club, it’s always like this and when you play against a team that is like this. The ball is a lot of times not on the floor and you have to be constantly breaking the play and do that, especially for attacking and creative players, it’s more difficult.”

Eberechi Eze = the new Jack Grealish?

Eze’s story at Arsenal feels worryingly similar to that of Jack Grealish at Manchester City – both have gone from being a big fish in a small pond to just another cog in a well-oiled machine.

Just like Grealish at Aston Villa, Eze got used to enjoying more or less a free role in a team that were not expected to win every game, and who were not facing frustrating low blocks in every game.

On top of that, it’s worth noting that Eze has had to get used to a far more intense schedule at Arsenal than he ever had at Palace, but at this point it’s hard to ignore that the main problem looks like the fact that he’s a poor stylistic fit rather than just fatigued.

The demands at Arsenal, the game states they often find themselves in, are just completely different from what Eze got used to at Palace. The question now is, can he adapt, or will he leave and go down as one of the club’s biggest flops of recent history?

“Let it all work out” was the song Eze was greeted with when he joined Arsenal. If only football were that simple.
