SoftBank and AMD have started joint validation of AMD Instinct GPUs for next-generation AI infrastructure by focusing on a GPU partitioning mechanism that lets a single GPU handle multiple AI workloads simultaneously. SoftBank developed an Orchestrator system that divides AMD Instinct GPU resources based on workload requirements: model size, number of concurrent executions, and memory needs. The system splits compute workloads across multiple GPU instances running on individual Accelerator Complex Dies (XCDs). These can range from single instance mode (SPX mode) up to eight instances (CPX mode). The HBM memory pools are also divided into individual regions for each GPU instance to prevent latency spikes. The goal is to avoid the inefficiency of uniform GPU resource allocation, which can lead to GPU resource shortages or waste depending on workload demands.

SoftBank says the enhanced Orchestrator runs multiple AI applications on a single GPU with minimal resource strain. No performance figures have been shared yet, though SoftBank mentions improved resource allocation for small and mid-size language model workloads. The company also plans to explore similar orchestration for other AI accelerators beyond AMD. A live demonstration is planned at the AMD booth during MWC Barcelona 2026 in March 2-5. SoftBank also published technical details on architecture and Orchestrator management methods on its Research Institute of Advanced Technology blog. In a recent report, we noted that AMD's next-gen Instinct MI455X accelerators, set to compete with NVIDIA's Vera Rubin, are running into serious manufacturing problems that are pushing back AMD's roadmap. Only limited production is expected this year, with mass production pushed to Q2 2027.

KDE released Plasma 6.6 today, the latest version of the popular Linux desktop environment, also used in Steam Deck desktop mode. Micron announced its 9650 NVMe SSD has entered mass production, making it the first PCIe Gen 6 data center drive to reach this milestone. The series was first unveiled in July 2025, and it features Micron G9 TLC NAND, including Micron designed SSD controller ASIC, DRAM, and Micron produced and validated firmware. The Micron 9650 delivers up to 28 GB/s in sequential reads, double that of PCIe Gen 5 drives. The drive's sequential write speed reaches 14 GB/s, while its random read performance hits 5.5 million IOPS and its random write achieves 900,000 IOPS. These numbers show 100%, 40%, 67%, and 22% gains over Gen 5. At a 25-watt power state, the drive offers double the performance of PCIe Gen 5 options. It has a sequential read efficiency of 1,120 MB/s per watt (2× better than Gen 5), and its sequential write efficiency is 560 MB/s per watt (1.4 times better). The random read efficiency stands at 220 KIOPS per watt (1.7 times higher) and random write at 36 KIOPS per watt (1.2 times improved).

The Micron 9650 supports both air-cooled and liquid-cooled configurations to handle higher performance densities in modern data centers. Micron conducted 18 months of interoperability testing across the PCIe Gen 6 ecosystem, including validation with high-port switches, retimers, and demonstrations at industry events. The drive is now being qualified by OEM and AI data center customers for deployment in AI training and inference workloads, particularly those requiring high-throughput data access for large language models and retrieval-augmented generation pipelines. MSI has released MSI Afterburner 4.6.7 Beta 2, adding support for its upcoming GeForce RTX 5090 Lightning series and introducing new PSU-level protection features tied to 16-pin (12VHPWR / 12V-2×6) power connectors. The headline addition is integration with MSI's GPU Safeguard+ system, available on select MEG Ai1x00 and MPG Ai1x00TS power supplies. A new PSU.dll plugin enables telemetry monitoring directly inside Afterburner, including voltage, current, power, temperature, efficiency, and fan speed. Supported MPG units can also report per-pin current data for 12VHPWR and 12V-2×6 connectors. If overcurrent or current imbalance is detected on the 16-pin connector, the app will load reduce the GPU power limit (typically to 75% on NVIDIA GPUs, 25% on AMD GPUs) and display an on-screen warning, allowing users to inspect the cable connection. Sound alerts can also be enabled.

Beyond PSU integration, Afterburner 4.6.7 Beta 2 updates the Voltage/Frequency curve editor with zoom and pan controls, adjustable node sizes, and improved curve manipulation with preserved per-point offsets. While adding support for upcoming RTX 5090 Lightning cards in advance is nice, the more notable addition is the monitoring-to-action pipeline that links PSU connector telemetry directly to automatic GPU power reduction in case of a fault.

Worldwide silicon wafer shipments in 2025 increased 5.8% to 12,973 million square inches (MSI) while wafer revenue slipped 1.2% to $11.4 billion over the same period, the SEMI Silicon Manufacturers Group (SMG) reported in its year-end analysis of the silicon wafer industry.

2025 marks an inflection year for wafer shipments, with silicon MSI resuming growth supported by strong demand for advanced epitaxial wafers in logic and polished wafers for high-bandwidth memory (HBM), driven by AI applications. Softness in wafer revenue is mostly attributed to the slow momentum in traditional semiconductor applications where the demand and pricing environment are yet to improve.

Chinese firm M5Stack has released its new AI Pyramid series, a small-form-factor edge AI PC aimed at developers and makers working with local inference workloads that stands out with its unique pyramid shape design. The lineup consists of two variants: AI Pyramid and AI Pyramid-Pro. Both models are built around the Axera AX8850 SoC, which combines an octa-core Arm Cortex-A55 CPU running at up to 1.7 GHz with a 24 TOPS INT8 NPU. The platform targets fully local AI processing, covering use cases such as computer vision, multimodal input, and on-device model inference, without depending on cloud acceleration.

Memory configurations differ between the two versions, with the standard AI Pyramid shipping with 4 GB of LPDDR4x, while the Pro model offers 8 GB. Storage is provided by 32 GB of onboard eMMC. The AX8850 supports hardware-accelerated H.264 and H.265 encoding and decoding at resolutions up to 8K at 30 FPS, as well as up to 16 concurrent 1080p decode streams. The specs are completed with dual Gigabit Ethernet and USB 3.0 ports, HDMI output, with the AI Pyramid-Pro adding HDMI input support. The device also integrates onboard audio hardware, an OLED status display, RGB lighting, and an active cooling solution. Pricing starts at $199 for the 4 GB AI Pyramid Computing Box, with the 8 GB Pro variant listed at $249 on the M5Stack website.

Intel's upcoming Core Ultra 5 250K Plus desktop processor has appeared in the Geekbench database, according to a post by Benchleaks on X. The CPU is part of Intel's Core Ultra 200S Plus "Arrow Lake Refresh" lineup, which is expected to launch next month. The Core Ultra 5 250K Plus features an 18-core configuration with 6 Performance cores and 12 Efficiency cores, up four E-Cores from the Core Ultra 5 245K 6P+8E layout. The processor runs at a 4.2 GHz base clock and 5.3 GHz boost. Cache specifications include 6 MB of L2 cache and 30 MB of L3 cache. Compared with the 245K, the Core Ultra 5 250K Plus keeps the same power ratings with a 125 W base power and a 159 W maximum turbo power, despite the higher core count and slightly increased boost clocks. P-core turbo frequencies are up by 100 MHz compared to the 245K, while E-core clocks reportedly remain unchanged at up to 4.7 GHz.

The test system used an ASUS PRIME Z890-P WIFI motherboard with 32 GB of memory. The processor scored 3,113 points in the single-core test and 15,251 points in the multicore test. As with most early database entries, performance may improve with final firmware and retail silicon. Intel is expected to position the Core Ultra 5 250K Plus in the sub-$300 segment, offering a modest upgrade over the Core Ultra 5 245K, which currently sells for around $200-215. The processor will be compatible with LGA 1851 motherboards and is part of what is expected to be the final CPU family for the socket, ahead of Intel's transition to LGA 1954 with the upcoming Nova Lake architecture later this year.
