Telangana Unveils Plans for Medical Tourism Growth and MVT Hub in Hyderabad, Boosting their Status as a Medical Tourism Leader in South Asia

The Telangana government is making rapid progress to position Hyderabad as one of the premier destinations for Medical Value Tourism (MVT) in South Asia. As a part of this initiative, the Telangana government proposes to set up a Telangana State Medical Tourism Society and develop a large-scale integrated MVT destination in Hyderabad. This is an ambitious initiative that aims to create a focused framework for medical tourism and increase the competitiveness of Hyderabad in the global medical tourism sector.

A high-level policy roundtable meeting was organized by Telangana Tourism to discuss the governance, structure, and future vision for the proposed society. The idea is to further strengthen the medical tourism capabilities of the state and develop an ecosystem that would attract more foreign patients to Hyderabad.

Hyderabad Poised for Growth as a Leading Medical Tourism Hub

According to V Kranthi, Managing Director of Telangana Tourism Development Corporation, Hyderabad is institutionally and operationally prepared to scale as a global leader in Medical Value Tourism. She stated, “Hyderabad stands institutionally and operationally prepared to scale as a globally trusted medical tourism destination. With our integrated healthcare, hospitality, and aviation ecosystem combined with clinical excellence, we are well-positioned to emerge as one of India’s top five regional MVT hubs.”

The city is already known for its advanced healthcare infrastructure, strong clinical outcomes, and cost-effective treatment options, making it an attractive choice for medical travelers. As medical tourism continues to grow worldwide, Hyderabad is primed to capitalize on the expanding MVT sector, drawing in patients seeking world-class medical services and affordable treatments.

The Need for a Coordinating Body to Propel Medical Tourism Growth

A key point raised by industry representatives at the meeting was the necessity of a single coordinating body to drive the branding, regulation, and international outreach of medical tourism in the state. The Telangana State Medical Tourism Society would oversee ethical self-regulation, grievance redressal mechanisms, and the licensing of medical tourism facilitators, ensuring a consistent and high-quality experience for international patients.

Medical travelers today are seeking transparency, seamless facilitation, and post-treatment continuity of care. A state-level body would provide the structure needed to ensure a smooth patient journey, from initial consultation to post-treatment care, while reinforcing Hyderabad’s global reputation as a trusted destination for medical tourism.

Creating a Medical Value Tourism Hub in Hyderabad

The roundtable also discussed the development of an integrated greenfield medical value tourism hub in Hyderabad, planned under a public-private partnership model. This hub would consolidate hospitals, wellness and Ayurveda institutions, medical colleges, research centers, and tourism services in one location, creating a comprehensive medical ecosystem.

The hub is envisioned to cater to the growing demand for medical tourism by offering services ranging from treatment to recuperation, while also providing leisure and tourism options. This integrated model will strengthen the healthcare delivery while offering a holistic experience for medical tourists, combining world-class healthcare with relaxation and recovery in a prime tourism destination.

The proposal aligns with provisions in the Union Budget 2026, which includes the development of five national MVT hubs across India, showcasing the government’s commitment to expanding the medical tourism sector. A detailed recommendation paper will be submitted to the Union ministries to further align with this national vision.

India’s Growing Medical Tourism Market

India’s medical value tourism industry continues to show strong growth under the ‘Heal in India’ initiative, with estimates projecting the market to reach $20.4 billion by 2026 and $25-28 billion by 2030. This growth is fueled by rising international demand for affordable, high-quality medical services and improved visa facilitation for medical tourists. Hyderabad has consistently ranked among India’s top three destinations for medical travelers, with international patient inflows having more than doubled over the past decade.

As global demand for medical services increases, Hyderabad’s advanced healthcare infrastructure, cost-effective treatments, and well-integrated ecosystem position the city as a key player in the medical tourism boom. The addition of a dedicated MVT hub and medical tourism society will help the city further capitalize on this growing trend and increase its global competitiveness in the sector.

Strengthening Hyderabad’s Position in the Global Medical Tourism Landscape

Hyderabad’s efforts to expand its medical tourism sector also involve strengthening the healthcare-hospitality-aviation ecosystem, which is critical to supporting the influx of medical tourists. The city’s affordable medical services, combined with its luxury hospitality and convenient transportation links, make it an attractive destination for medical travelers seeking high-quality treatment at competitive prices.

The development of the MVT hub will further integrate healthcare, wellness, and tourism services, providing patients with a one-stop solution for all their medical and recuperative needs. The city’s status as a leading destination for medical tourism will be bolstered by this strategic investment in both healthcare delivery and tourism infrastructure, ensuring it remains competitive on the global stage.

A Vision for Sustainable Medical Tourism Growth

The establishment of the Telangana State Medical Tourism Society and the development of the MVT hub are crucial steps in the state’s vision to create a sustainable and integrated medical tourism ecosystem. These initiatives are set to significantly contribute to the growth of India’s medical tourism sector, creating new opportunities for the local economy, generating employment, and improving global competitiveness.

Hyderabad’s position as a trusted destination for medical travelers is expected to strengthen further, with the city attracting not only patients seeking world-class care but also investors and industry players looking to be part of the growing medical tourism market in India.

The Future of Medical Tourism in Hyderabad

The Telangana government’s vision to enhance the Telangana State Medical Tourism Society and MVT hub will drive the growth of Hyderabad as a prominent global destination for medical tourism. With its comprehensive healthcare and tourism services, the city is on the cusp of experiencing the growing demand for medical value tourism. The proposed development will not only bring in global medical tourists but also help in the economic development of the state, further establishing Hyderabad’s position in the global medical tourism sector.
