Mikko Rantanen and Josh Morrissey out extended time after Olympic injuries
The National Hockey League is set to resume on Wednesday, but there are reports that two players will not be playing with their respective teams when the season starts again. That is because Dallas Stars right winger Mikko Rantanen of Nousiainen, Finland will be out two weeks according to Ethan Hetu of Pro Hockey Rumors after suffering a lower-body injury against Team Canada in the Olympic semifinals on Friday and Winnipeg Jets defenseman Josh Morrissey of Calgary, Alberta has been placed on the injury reserve after suffering an upper body injury against the Czech Republic on February 12 to begin the Olympic tournament.
Other notable injury
We are already aware of the injury to Team Canada star Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins. We do not know if Crosby will miss any time at this point.
Mikko Rantanen in 2025-26
Rantanen is in his first full year with the Dallas Stars. In 54 games, Rantanen has 20 goals and 49 assists for 69 points in 54 games. He is a +2 with a career-high 87 penalty minutes, 30 power-play points, one game-winning goal, 126 shots on goal, 32 faceoff wins, 27 blocked shots, 38 hits, 18 takeaways and 66 giveaways.
Rantanen’s physicality this season has led to two games where he had a combined total of 37 penalty minutes. In a 3-2 Stars loss to the New York Islanders on November 18, Rantanen was given a 10 minute misconduct penalty and a five minute boarding penalty. In a 3-2 Stars loss to the Calgary Flames on November 22, Rantanen was given a five minute major for fighting, a five minute major for boarding and a 10 minute misconduct.
Rantanen’s game-winning goal came on October 26 in a 3-2 Stars win over the Nashville Predators. Robertson broke a 2-2 deadlock from Mavrik Bourque of Plessisville, Quebec at 10:44 on the power-play.
Josh Morrissey in 2025-26
Morrissey has 10 goals and 32 assists for 42 points in 56 games. He is a +10 with 24 penalty minutes, 10 power-play points, one game-winning goal, 104 shots on goal, 94 blocked shots, 25 hits, 14 takeaways and 70 giveaways.
Morrissey’s game-winning goal came on January 15 in a 6-2 Jets win over the Minnesota Wild. Morrissey scored with three seconds left in the first period from Mark Scheifele of Kitchener, Ontario and Jonathan Toews of Winnipeg, Manitoba with three seconds left in the first period. At the time, the Jets went up 3-0.
