Samsung backs away from iPhone Air copycat strategy

Samsung has officially launched the Galaxy S26 series, and the industry is now looking at the next set of devices. Meanwhile, Samsung’s COO just signalled that the Slim phone project may skip 2026 due to low sales of the S25 Edge.

Won-Joon Choi, COO of MX Business, acknowledged that the sales of the Galaxy S25 Edge were comparatively lower than those of the other Galaxy models.

Market analysis reports already revealed what the executive expressed today. That was the only reason behind the sudden revival of Galaxy S26 Plus in the 2026 flagship lineup.

Is a new Slim phone coming in 2026?

The top executive said that Samsung is β€œstill evaluating” the launch of another super-thin phone. The Galaxy S26 Edge’s development was almost completed, and it was ready to take the place of the S26 Plus in the lineup.

However, the Korean tech giant decided to retain the Galaxy S Plus version. Galaxy S25 Edge sales were not sufficient to make it a real alternative to the Plus. Plus indeed sells lower than the base and Ultra, but more than the Edge.

While Samsung abandoned the Galaxy S26 Edge, the work is still underway on a project named β€œMore Slim.” It’s a device different from the S26 Edge, and Samsung might fix the mistakes of the Galaxy S25 Edge to improve sales.

That said, a Slim phone is uncertain from Samsung this year. Apple is indeed working on the second-generation iPhone Air, but it’s not coming in 2026. The device may launch sometime in 2027, as part of a reshuffled strategy.
