Germany's Aicher gets big super-g win to boost discipline title bid
Germany's Emma Aicher was a class apart as she stormed to a comprehensive victory in a women's World Cup super-g on Saturday in Andorra to move into contention for the discipline title.
Twice Olympic silver medallist Aicher won in Soldeu .88 of a second ahead of New Zealand's Alice Robinson. Friday's downhill winner Corinne Suter of Switzerland was third, another one-tenths back.
Italy's Federica Brignone was no factor in her first race since double super-g and giant slalom Olympic gold as she trailed Aicher by more than two seconds in 15th place.
Aicher failed to finish the Olympic super-g after her downhill and team combined silvers but is now the first skier with two World Cup season wins in the discipline - for an overall season tally of three and five in her career.
"I don't think it was fully executed. During the run I thought to myself: Ski a little more consistently! But maybe it worked out quite well," Aicher told German broadcasters ARD.
Austrian skier Ricarda Haaser had a heavy fall and was taken away on a rescue sled. The Austrian team spoke of "a severe knee injury", with news reports saying she suffered a left tibial plateau fracture.
Haaser had only returned to action in December from a cruciate ligament and meniscus tear in her right knee.
Sofia Goggia of Italy placed sixth and continues to lead the super-g standings, but is now only 20 points ahead of Robinson. Aicher, who is also in the running for the downhill title, is third with a deficit of 96 points.
There are three races left in the discipline with a maximum 300 points available.
Saturday's race replaced a cancelled one in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, Austria, and another super-g is scheduled for Sunday in Soldeu.
American star Mikaela Shiffrin is not competing in Soldeu but retained the overall World Cup lead ahead of also absent Swiss Camille Rast and Aicher.
