Three unanswered Zydeco goals seal Scarecrows’ fate
TOPEKA (KSNT) – The Topeka Scarecrows were looking to cruise to victory Friday night, but Baton Rogue got hot and flipped the table.
Despite outshooting its opponent 37-25 on the night and starting up 2-0 after the first 27 minutes, the Scarecrows allowed Zydeco to score three unanswered goals in the final 23 minutes, spoiling what looked to be Topeka’s night.
Scarecrow’s Cory Checco got scoring started on the night in the first. His score off a Boston Bird assist accounted for the lone goal in the period.
It wasn’t Bird’s last assist, as he and Checco both helped Douglas Blaisdell record the second goal of the night seven minutes into the second period. It would be the last time a Scarecrow puck hit the back of the net.
With less than three minutes left, Zydeco’s Scott Shorrock put Baton Rouge on the board. Jake Cox and Heath Ford assisted in the effort.
The top of the third started red hot. Four players — two Scarecrows and two Zydeco — were penalized for fighting within the first two minutes. It eventually led to another Zydeco score at the 5:37 mark from Austin Weber.
Cox scored one final goal at 14:41, putting the Scarecrows away on a warm February night.
Topeka will have its chance at revenge next Thursday in Stormont Vail as the two teams meet again. Puck drop is set at 7:05.
