The son of the former major leaguer, Gary Redus II, played two seasons of college basketball at South Alabama from 2009-11. As a coach, he worked as an assistant coach on Kim Mulkey’s staff at LSU since 2022-23, which ended with the Tigers winning a national championship.

As of Monday, the younger Redus is the head coach at Rutgers, replacing Coquese Washington.

“I am honored and grateful for the opportunity to be the next women’s basketball coach at Rutgers University,” Redus said in a statement announcing the hire. “I am no stranger to the rich history of basketball here at Rutgers and I look forward to building on that legacy as we move the program forward. I’d like to thank Keli and President Tate for their vote of confidence in me and the vision we share for the future of this program.

“My family and I are extremely excited to fully immerse ourselves in this community and work tirelessly to elevate our women’s basketball program back to an elite level.”

The Scarlet Knights went 9-20 in 2025-26, ending the season on an 11-game losing streak and winning only one game in Big Ten play.
