Rory McIlroy joins Tiger Woods as being uncertain for TGL playoffs

PONTE VEDRA BEACH β€” Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy both could be sidelined when their teams meet in the TGL playoffs.

Woods has not played this season for his Jupiter Links team while recovering from back surgery. McIlroy sounded less optimistic about playing for Boston Common after shooting a 71 in the March 15 final round at The Players Championship. He finished the tournament at even par.

"We'll see," the Jupiter resident said after a long thought. "Yeah, geez, I haven't even … yeah, we'll see."

Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods watch golfers warm up for TGL's inaugural match at SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

The SoFi Cup semifinals are March 17 at SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens. Jupiter and Boston will meet at 9 p.m. The 6:30 p.m. match features defending champion Atlanta Drive and against Los Angeles Golf Club.

McIlroy, the No. 2 player in the world, decided the morning of the opening round of The Players he would play after withdrawing the previous week from the Arnold Palmer Invitational before the third round.

Then after making the cut at TPC Sawgrass he said the plan was to "hopefully" play his TGL match.

"I'll see how I'm feeling," he said. "But yes."

But McIlroy did not sound as confident two days later even though he reported progress in his game after his final round.

"Happy I got through four days and my body feels good," he said. "I feel like my game sort of progressively got a little bit better as the week went on, even though the scores probably didn't reflect it over the weekend. I hit the ball well. I just didn't make anything on the greens.

"Happy to come through four rounds and feel like my body held up well. A couple little things to work on, but overall, not the week that I wanted. Just trying to take the positives."

McIlroy was asked about Woods after his second round and said he does not believe the Jupiter Island resident would play. Woods had disc replacement surgery Oct. 10 and was hoping to join his team for at least one match at the end of the season.

Although he not played all season, Woods has attended every Jupiter match.

Woods and McIlroy co-founded the indoor, high-tech league.

The official lineups for the semifinal matches will be revealed March 167.

The winners will play in the best-of-3 finals that start March 23.
